SYNTHESIS OF CHIRALS REGIOISOMERS FROM D-MANNITOL: OBTAINMENT OF A ACETYLENIC ALCOHOLS MIXTURE. The synthesis of chiral acetylenic regioisomers was described by using an appropriate intermediate such as isopropylidene glycerol, a synthon widely used in the enantioselective syntheses. This intermediate was prepared from D-mannitol. The nine obtained compounds have been characterized by their respective spectral data. The mixture of chiral acetylenic alcohols showed activity against Escherichia coli when tested through the monitoring of CO(2) released during microbial respiration by using a conductimetric system.3292355235
On dynamic network entropy in cancer
The cellular phenotype is described by a complex network of molecular
interactions. Elucidating network properties that distinguish disease from the
healthy cellular state is therefore of critical importance for gaining
systems-level insights into disease mechanisms and ultimately for developing
improved therapies. By integrating gene expression data with a protein
interaction network to induce a stochastic dynamics on the network, we here
demonstrate that cancer cells are characterised by an increase in the dynamic
network entropy, compared to cells of normal physiology. Using a fundamental
relation between the macroscopic resilience of a dynamical system and the
uncertainty (entropy) in the underlying microscopic processes, we argue that
cancer cells will be more robust to random gene perturbations. In addition, we
formally demonstrate that gene expression differences between normal and cancer
tissue are anticorrelated with local dynamic entropy changes, thus providing a
systemic link between gene expression changes at the nodes and their local
network dynamics. In particular, we also find that genes which drive
cell-proliferation in cancer cells and which often encode oncogenes are
associated with reductions in the dynamic network entropy. In summary, our
results support the view that the observed increased robustness of cancer cells
to perturbation and therapy may be due to an increase in the dynamic network
entropy that allows cells to adapt to the new cellular stresses. Conversely,
genes that exhibit local flux entropy decreases in cancer may render cancer
cells more susceptible to targeted intervention and may therefore represent

This paper introduces the concept of the “learning destination” as a solution to historical challenges of event evaluation. The paper evaluates its relevance and role in the development of an inclusive and strategic approach to event planning and identifies the process (and context) of the development of a strategic evaluative event framework. Using a case-study methodology, evidence is provided from a major visitor-dependent destination to support the development of a strategic Framework for the Assessment of Major Events (FAME) with recommendations advanced for its application and generalizability across other destinations
Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. Simple methodology for the quantitative analysis of fatty acids in human red blood cells
In the last years, there has been an increasing
interest in evaluating possible relations between fatty acid
(FA) patterns and the risk for chronic diseases. Due to the
long life span (120 days) of red blood cells (RBCs), their
FA profile reflects a longer term dietary intake and was
recently suggested to be used as an appropriate biomarker
to investigate correlations between FA metabolism and diseases.
Therefore, the aim of this work was to develop and
validate a simple and fast methodology for the quantification
of a broad range of FAs in RBCs using gas chromatography
with flame ionization detector, as a more common
and affordable equipment suitable for biomedical and
nutritional studies including a large number of samples. For
this purpose, different sample preparation protocols were
tested and compared, including a classic two-step method
(Folch method) with modifications and different one-step methods, in which lipid extraction and derivatization were
performed simultaneously. For the one-step methods, different
methylation periods and the inclusion of a saponification
reaction were evaluated. Differences in absolute FA
concentrations were observed among the tested methods,
in particular for some metabolically relevant FAs such as
trans elaidic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. The one-step
method with saponification and 60 min of methylation time
was selected since it allowed the identification of a higher
number of FAs, and was further submitted to in-house validation.
The proposed methodology provides a simple, fast
and accurate tool to quantitatively analyse FAs in human
RBCs, useful for clinical and nutritional studies.This work received financial support from the

KB-Rank: efficient protein structure and functional annotation identification via text query
The KB-Rank tool was developed to help determine the functions of proteins. A user provides text query and protein structures are retrieved together with their functional annotation categories. Structures and annotation categories are ranked according to their estimated relevance to the queried text. The algorithm for ranking first retrieves matches between the query text and the text fields associated with the structures. The structures are next ordered by their relative content of annotations that are found to be prevalent across all the structures retrieved. An interactive web interface was implemented to navigate and interpret the relevance of the structures and annotation categories retrieved by a given search. The aim of the KB-Rank tool is to provide a means to quickly identify protein structures of interest and the annotations most relevant to the queries posed by a user. Informational and navigational searches regarding disease topics are described to illustrate the tool’s utilities. The tool is available at the URL http://protein.tcmedc.org/KB-Rank
