    Les matériaux alternatifs placés dans différents contextes routiers sont soumis à des contraintes mécaniques, thermiques et hydriques, susceptibles de modifier leurs propriétés physiques et chimiques, donc leur comportement à long terme. Bien que fondamentale, l'analyse du retour d'expérience à partir d'ouvrages routiers réalisés avec des matériaux alternatifs n'a jusqu'à maintenant pas été véritablement réalisée. Peu de données étant disponibles aujourd'hui sur ces ouvrages, un panel de 17 cas d'études français, parmi lesquels des ouvrages classiques et des plots expérimentaux, a été recensé. L'analyse de ces cas comprend la description de la structure de l'ouvrage, des caractéristiques du matériau alternatif utilisé, des facteurs locaux susceptibles d'avoir une influence sur le comportement des matériaux, et des réponses mécaniques et environnementales du matériau et de la structure routiÚre. Des recommandations pour une meilleure conduite de futures expériences sont proposées

    Spatial and temporal variations in Pb concentrations and isotopic composition in road dust, farmland soil and vegetation in proximity to roads since cessation of use of leaded petrol in the UK

    Results are presented for a study of spatial distributions and temporal trends in concentrations of lead (Pb) from different sources in soil and vegetation of an arable farm in central Scotland in the decade since the use of leaded petrol was terminated. Isotopic analyses revealed that in all of the samples analysed, the Pb conformed to a binary mixture of petrol Pb and Pb from industrial or indigenous geological sources and that locally enhanced levels of petrol Pb were restricted to within 10 m of a motorway and 3 m of a minor road. Overall, the dominant source of Pb was historical emissions from nearby industrial areas. There was no discernible change in concentration or isotopic composition of Pb in surface soil or vegetation over the decade since the ban on the sale of leaded petrol. There was an order of magnitude decrease in Pb concentrations in road dust over the study period, but petrol Pb persisted at up to 43% of the total Pb concentration in 2010. Similar concentrations and spatial distributions of petrol Pb and non petrol Pb in vegetation in both 2001 and 2010, with enhanced concentrations near roads, suggested that redistribution of previously deposited material has operated continuously over that period, maintaining a transfer pathway of Pb into the biosphere. The results for vegetation and soil transects near minor roads provided evidence of a non petrol Pb source associated with roads/traffic, but surface soil samples from the vicinity of a motorway failed to show evidence of such a source

The use of Basic Oxygen Furnace slags (BOF slags) has been restrained due to insufficient volume stability, and due to the lack of environmental regulations. The purpose of the PRECODD-ECLAIR research program is to develop a behavior model based on a multi-scale physico-chemical, mechanical, hydrodynamic and ecotoxicological characterizations of a BOF slag used in a public works scenario.     Stormwater quality performance of a macro-pervious pavement car park installation equipped with channel drain based oil and silt retention devices

    AbstractThis paper reports the results of a two year field monitoring exercise intended to investigate the pollution abatement capabilities of a novel system which offers an alternative to the, now well established, pervious pavement system as a source control device for stormwater management. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a live installation of a macro-pervious pavement system (MPPS) (operated as a visitors' car park at a prison in Central Scotland) in retaining and treating a range of pollutants which originate from automobile use or become concentrated on the parking surface from the wider environment. The MPPS is a sub-class of pervious pavement system where the vast majority of the surface is impermeable. It directs stormwater into a pervious sub surface storage/attenuation zone through a series of distinct infiltration points fast enough to prevent flooding during the design storm. In the particular system studied here the infiltration points consist of a network of oil/silt separation devices with extensive further pollutant retention/degradation provided during the passage of stormwater through the sub surface zone. Approximately 12 months after the car park was completed a sampling regime was instigated in which grab samples were collected at intervals from each of the three sub catchments whilst, simultaneously, samples were collected directly from the, pollutant retaining, infiltration devices. Through investigation of samples collected at the upstream end of the system, the retention of significant amounts of hydrocarbons and heavy metals in the initial collection devices has been illustrated and the analysis of effluent samples collected at the outlet points indicate that the system is capable of producing effluent which is of a standard comparable to that expected from a traditional pervious pavement system and is acceptable for direct release into a surface water receptor. The system offers the opportunity to accrue the benefits of a pervious pavement when the use of traditional paving surfaces is the preferred option

    Risk prioritisation of stormwater pollutant sources

    This paper describes the development of a pollutant risk prioritisation methodology for the comparative assessment of stormwater pollutants discharged from differing land use types and activities. Guidelines are presented which evaluate available data with respect to ‘likelihood of occurrence’ and ‘severity of impact’. The use of the developed approach is demonstrated through its application to total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, lead and cadmium. The proposed benchmarking scheme represents a transparent and auditable mechanism to support the synthesis of data from a variety of sources and is sufficiently flexible to incorporate the use of chemical, physical and/or ecological data sets. Practitioners involved in developing and implementing pollutant mitigation programmes are assisted in two key ways. Firstly through enabling the risks to receiving waters from diffuse pollution on a source-by-source and/or pollutant-by-pollutant basis at a catchment scale to be comparatively assessed and prioritised. Secondly, the methodology informs the selection of appropriate diffuse pollution control strategies

    Technological Review of Permeable Pavement Systems for Applications in Small Island Developing States

KGaA, Weinheim This paper presents a technological review of permeable pavement systems (PPS) for applications in urban areas of small island developing states (SIDS). This review includes a literature survey of PPS, challenges and opportunities of climate change and urban development in SIDS, and key aspects worth considering for widespread acceptance and use of PPS in SIDS. SIDS is comprised of several nations located across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and South China seas. They are particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change and increasing urbanization. Urban stormwater management and flooding are often serious challenges faced by authorities in most SIDS. PPS are resilient infrastructure which can assist in mitigating flooding by reducing runoff and peak flows and improving the landscape perviousness. PPS can further improve stormwater runoff quality to receiving natural waters by reducing pollutant loadings of suspended solids, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons. Unlike most territorial states, the geographical and geologically confined nature of most SIDS present unique parameters for consideration when designing permeable pavements for SIDS. This literature survey found that some of the most important parameters include traffic loads, cost, construction aggregate choice, and availability, permeability of existing soil at the intended location, depth of water table, potential for groundwater contamination, slope of the pavement, stormwater reuse option, clogging, maintenance, and support from policy makers. Continued practical research into the use of permeable pavements for urban runoff management in SIDS is on-going with the expectation of PPS being utilized in many SIDS

    The sources, impact and management of car park runoff pollution: a review

    Traffic emissions contribute significantly to the build-up of diffuse pollution loads on urban surfaces with their subsequent mobilisation and direct discharge posing problems for receiving water quality. This review focuses on the impact and mitigation of solids, metals, nutrients and organic pollutants in the runoff deriving from car parks. Variabilities in the discharged pollutant levels and in the potentials for pollutant mitigation complicate an impact assessment of car park runoff. The different available stormwater best management practices and proprietary devices are reported to be capable of reductions of between 20% and almost 100% for both suspended solids and a range of metals. This review contributes to prioritising the treatment options which can achieve the appropriate pollutant reductions whilst conforming to the site requirements of a typical car park. By applying different treatment scenarios to the runoff from a hypothetical car park, it is shown that optimal performance, in terms of ecological benefits for the receiving water, can be achieved using a treatment train incorporating permeable paving and bioretention systems. The review identifies existing research gaps and emphasises the pertinent management practices as well as design issues which are relevant to the mitigation of car park pollution
