    Immunomodulatory effects of palladium(II) complexes of 1,2,4-triazole on murine peritoneal macrophages

    The 1,2,4-triazolyl-bridged polynuclear complexes [{PdCl(2)(mu-Htrz)}(n)] (1) and [{PdBr(2)(mu-Htrz)}(n)] (2) have been obtained in this work. Compound 1 is prepared by the displacement of acetonitrile from [PdCl(2)(MeCN)(2)] by 1,2,4-triazole (Htrz). Further addition of potassium bromide to the reaction medium afforded complex 2. The new complexes have been isolated, purified and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR and UV-visible electronic spectroscopies and thermogravimetric (TG) curves. The experimental data suggested that, in both cases, the coordination of 1,2,4-Htrz takes place through the N(2) and N(4) atoms, bridging the palladium centers. The square-planar coordination polyhedron of palladium(II) is determined by two nitrogen atoms from the triazole ligands, while the other two coordination positions are occupied by the chloro (1) or bromo (2) ligands. TG curves indicated that the nature of the anionic ligand does not affect significantly the thermal stability of 1 and 2. The final products of the thermal decompositions were identified as metallic palladium by X-ray powder diffractometry.     Microstructural design for mechanical and electrical properties of Spark Plasma Sintered Al2O3-SiC nanocomposites

    [EN] Al2O3-17 vol.% SiC nanocomposites were prepared by powder mixture of submicrosized alpha-Al2O3, nanosized gamma-Al2O3 and different nanosized beta-SiC. Materials were sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique at two temperatures (1400-1550 degrees C) and their electrical conductivity and mechanical properties were investigated. High-density composites have been achieved even at the lowest sintering temperatures and the microstructure characterization shows SiC particles located both within the Al2O3 matrix grains and/or at the Al2O3 grain boundaries. It has been demonstrated that microstructure tailoring is possible by suitable selection of starting materials and fast sintering by SPS. Accurate design of nanocomposites microstructures allows obtaining moderately conductive (<100 Omega cm) or insulating (10(8) Omega cm) materials while the chemical composition is similar.     On the Quantum Invariant for the Spherical Seifert Manifold

    We study the Witten--Reshetikhin--Turaev SU(2) invariant for the Seifert manifold S3/ΓS^3/\Gamma where Γ\Gamma is a finite subgroup of SU(2). We show that the WRT invariants can be written in terms of the Eichler integral of the modular forms with half-integral weight, and we give an exact asymptotic expansion of the invariants by use of the nearly modular property of the Eichler integral. We further discuss that those modular forms have a direct connection with the polyhedral group by showing that the invariant polynomials of modular forms satisfy the polyhedral equations associated to Γ\Gamma.Comment: 36 page

    Effect of CNFs content on the tribological behaviour of spark plasma sintering ceramic-CNFs composites

    Alumina-carbon nanofibres (CNFs) and silicon carbide-CNFs nanocomposites with different volume fraction of CNFs (0-100vol.%) were obtained by spark plasma sintering. The effect of CNFs content on the tribological behaviour in dry sliding conditions on the ceramic-carbon nanocomposites has been investigated using the ball-on-disk technique against alumina balls. The wear rate of ceramic-CNFs nanocomposites decreases with CNFs increasing content. The friction coefficient of the Al 2O 3/CNFs and SiC/CNFs nanocomposites with high CNFs content was found to be significantly lower compared to monolithic Al 2O 3 and SiC due to the effect of CNFs and unexpectedly slightly lower than CNFs material. The main wear mechanism in the nanocomposite was abrasion of the ceramic and carbon components which act in the interface as a sort of lubricating media. The experimental results demonstrate that the addition of CNFs to the ceramic composites significantly reduces friction coefficient and wear rate, resulting in suitable materials for unlubricated tribological applications. © 2011.This work has been carried out with financial support of National Plan Projects MAT2006-01783 and MAT2007-30989-E and the Regional Project FICYT PC07-021.     “We have been magnified for years - now you are under the microscope!": Co-researchers with learning disabilities created an online survey to challenge public understanding of learning disabilities

    Public attitudes towards learning disabilities (LDs) are generally reported as positive, inclusive and empathetic. However, these findings do not reflect the lived experiences of people with LDs. To shed light on this disparity, a team of co-researchers with LDs created the first online survey to challenge public understanding of LDs, asking questions in ways that are important to them and represent how they see themselves. Here, we describe and evaluate the process of creating an accessible survey platform and an online survey in a research team consisting of academic and non-academic professionals with and without LDs or autism. Through this inclusive research process, the co-designed survey met the expectations of the co-researchers and was well-received by the initial survey respondents. We reflect on the co-researchers’ perspectives following the study completion, and consider the difficulties and advantages we encountered deploying such approaches and their potential implications on future survey data analysis

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.     Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters
