Investigating early childhood curriculum and pedagogy through a three-way collaboration
This paper examines one aspect of the university curriculum: the Professional Experience or practicum. Professional Experience has always been a pivotal and valued aspect of Teacher Education courses. However, in the contemporary Australian context many of the traditional ways of âdoingâ the practicum are unsustainable. Two new Flinders University Early Childhood pre-service programs implement a different approach. Professional Experience in these new programs is underpinned by a partnership orientation focusing on the contributions that pre-service educators can make to young childrenâs learning through the pursuit of joint research. This change in the university curriculum provides the opportunity for centre/school and university staff to work in new ways and offers opportunities for mutual investigations of early childhood curriculum and pedagogy. This paper outlines examples of the contributions that pre-service educators have made within a partnership approach. Their stories demonstrate how the changed roles of the university staff, practicing early childhood educators and pre-service teachers have enabled the pursuit of significant questions about young childrenâs learning

Creating New ÎČ-Globin-Expressing Lentiviral Vectors by High-Resolution Mapping of Locus Control Region Enhancer Sequences.
Hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy is a promising approach for treating disorders of the hematopoietic system. Identifying combinations of cis-regulatory elements that do not impede packaging or transduction efficiency when included in lentiviral vectors has proven challenging. In this study, we deploy LV-MPRA (lentiviral vector-based, massively parallel reporter assay), an approach that simultaneously analyzes thousands of synthetic DNA fragments in parallel to identify sequence-intrinsic and lineage-specific enhancer function at near-base-pair resolution. We demonstrate the power of LV-MPRA in elucidating the boundaries of previously unknown intrinsic enhancer sequences of the human ÎČ-globin locus control region. Our approach facilitated the rapid assembly of novel therapeutic ÎČAS3-globin lentiviral vectors harboring strong lineage-specific recombinant control elements capable of correcting a mouse model of sickle cell disease. LV-MPRA can be used to map any genomic locus for enhancer activity and facilitates the rapid development of therapeutic vectors for treating disorders of the hematopoietic system or other specific tissues and cell types
The three sphere swimmer in a nonlinear viscoelastic medium
A simple model for a swimmer consisting of three colinearly linked spheres attached by rods and oscillating out of phase to break reciprocal motion is analyzed. With a prescribed forcing of the rods acting on the three spheres, the swimming dynamics are determined analytically in both a Newtonian Stokes fluid and a zero Reynolds number, nonlinear, Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluid with Deborah numbers of order one (or less), highlighting the effects of viscoelasticity on the net displacement of swimmer. For instance, the model predicts that the three-sphere swimmer with a sinusoidal, but nonreciprocal, forcing cycle within an Oldroyd-B representation of a polymeric Boger fluid moves a greater distance with enhanced efficiency in comparison with its motility in a Newtonian fluid of the same viscosity. Furthermore, the nonlinear contributions to the viscoelastic constitutive relation, while dynamically nontrivial, are predicted a posteriori to have no effect on swimmer motility at leading order, given a prescribed forcing between spheres

Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (ÎÏ) and pseudorapidity (Îη) are measured in âsNN=5.02ââTeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1ââÎŒb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ÎŁETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Îη|<5) ânear-sideâ (ÎÏâŒ0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ÎŁETPb. A long-range âaway-sideâ (ÎÏâŒÏ) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ÎŁETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Îη and ÎÏ) and ÎŁETPb dependence. The resultant ÎÏ correlation is approximately symmetric about Ï/2, and is consistent with a dominant cosâĄ2ÎÏ modulation for all ÎŁETPb ranges and particle pT
REACH: a mixed-methods study to investigate the measurement, prediction and improvement of retention and engagement in outpatient HIV care
BACKGROUND
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) benefits individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through reduced morbidity and mortality, and brings public health gains through a reduction in HIV transmission. People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) need to know their HIV status and engage in HIV care in order for these individual and public health benefits to be realised.
OBJECTIVE
To explore, describe and understand HIV outpatient attendance in PLWH, in order to develop cost-effective interventions to optimise engagement in care.
DESIGN
A mixed-methods study incorporating secondary analysis of data from the UK Collaborative HIV Cohort (UK CHIC) study and primary data collection.
METHODS
Phase 1 â an engagement-in-care (EIC) algorithm was developed to categorise patients as in care or out of care for each month of follow-up. The algorithm was used in group-based trajectory analysis to examine patterns of attendance over time and of the association between the proportion of months in care before ART initiation and post-ART mortality and laboratory test costs. Phase 2 â a cross-sectional survey was conducted among patients attending seven London HIV clinics. Regular attenders (all appointments attended in past year), irregular attenders (one or more appointments missed in past year) and non-attenders (recent absence of â„â1 year) were recruited. A âretention risk toolâ was developed to identify those at risk of disengaging from care. Individual in-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted with PLWH. Phase 3 â key informant interviews were conducted with HIV service providers. Interventions were developed from the findings of phases 2 and 3.
RESULTS
Plots from group-based trajectory analysis indicated that four trajectories best fitted the data. Higher EIC is associated with reduced mortality but the association between EIC before starting ART, and post-ART mortality [relative hazard (RH) per 10% increase in EIC 0.29, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18 to 0.47] was attenuated after adjustment for fixed covariates and post-ART cluster of differentiation 4 counts and viral loads (RH 0.74, 95% CI 0.42 to 1.30). Small differences were found in pre-ART EIC and the costs of post-ART lab tests. The final model for the retention risk tool included age at diagnosis, having children, recreational drug use, drug/alcohol dependency, insufficient money for basic needs and use of public transport to get to the clinic. Quantitative and qualitative data showed that a range of psychological, social and economic issues were associated with disengagement from care. The negative impact of stigma on attendance was highlighted. Interventions were proposed that support a holistic approach to care including peer support, address stigma by holding clinics in alternative locations and involve training staff to encourage attendance.
CONCLUSIONS
The study shows the adverse health impacts of disengaging from HIV care and demonstrates the importance of the wider health and social context in managing HIV effectively. Although phase 1 analysis was based on UK data, phases 2 and 3 were limited to London. The interventions proposed are supported by the data but their cost-effectiveness requires testing. Future research is needed to evaluate the interventions, to validate our retention risk tool across populations and settings, and to fully analyse the economic costs of disengaging from HIV care
