On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta

Synthesis, structure and vibrational properties of GdIG(X):YIG(1-X) ferrimagnetic ceramic composite

Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) crystal has many attractive characteristics, such as low dielectric loss, narrow resonance linewidth in microwave region and also possesses a good saturated magnetization value. Composite technology in general sets out to combine materials in such a way that the properties of the composite are the optimum for a particular application. The different materials work together to give a composite of unique properties. In this work, we present the preparation procedure (obtaining) of the GdIG(x):YIG(1-X) ferrimagnetic ceramic matrix composite by mechanical alloying and calcinations. Besides that, we study its properties by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared, Micro-Raman, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and hysteresis loop measurements. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Mechanical alloying has been used successfully to produce nanocrystalline powders of hydroxyapatite (HA) using three different procedures. The milled HA was studied by X-ray diffraction, Infrared, Raman scattering spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We obtained HA with different degrees of crystallinity and time of milling. The grain size analysis through SEM and XRD shows particles with dimensions of 36.9, 14.3 and 35.5 nm (for (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively) forming bigger units with dimensions given by 117.2, 110.8 and 154.4 nm (for (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively). The Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that an atomic ratio of Ca/P= 1.67, 1.83 and 1.50 for reactions (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively. These results suggest that the R1 nanocrystalline ceramic is closer to the expected value for the ratio Ca/P for hydroxyapatite, which is 513 congruent to 1.67. The bioactivity analysis shows that all the samples implanted into the rabbits can be considered biocompatible, since they had been considered not toxic, bad not caused inflammation and reject on the part of the organisms of the animals, during the period of implantation. The samples implanted in rabbits had presented new osseous tissue formation with the presence of osteoblasts cells. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Analysis of the four wave mixing effect (FWM) in a dispersion decreasing fiber (DDF) for a WDM system

We did a numerical investigation of the propagation of short light pulses in the region of 1.55 mu m and the conversion efficiency (CE) for the four wave mixing generation (FWM) of ordinary and dispersion decreasing fibers for use in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, Our simulations studies three different profiles, linear, hyperbolic. and constant, One conclude that for all the profiles there is decrease of the conversion efficiency with the increase in the channel separation. The hyperbolic profile present a higher efficiency of around 1000 above in magnitude compared with the others profiles at 0.2 nm of channel separation. We calculate the conversion efficiency versus the fiber length for the three profiles. The conversion efficiency for the hyperbolic profile is higher when compared to the constant and linear profiles. The other interesting point of the hyperbolic profile is that the increase of the CE in the beginning of the fiber does not show my oscillation in the CE value (log eta), which was observed for the constant and linear profiles. For all the profiles there is an increase of the conversion efficiency with the increase of the pump power. The compression factor C-i for the generated FWM signal at omega(3) was measured along the DDF's and the constant profile fibers. One can conclude that with the use of decreasing dispersion profile (DDF) fibers one can have a control of the (CE) conversion efficiency and the compression factor of the four wave mixing (FWM) generation in WDM systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the shape of dental cavities made with the CVDentus® system using different ultrasound power levels. One standard cavity was made on the buccal aspect of 15 bovine incisors with a CVDentus® cylindrical bur (82142). The sample was divided into three groups: G1 - ultrasound with power II; G2 - ultrasound with power III; and G3 - ultrasound with power IV. A standardizing device was used to obtain standardized preparations and ultrasound was applied during one minute in each dental preparation. The cavities were sectioned in the middle, allowing observation of the cavity’s profile with a magnifying glass, and width and depth measurement using the Leica Qwin program. The Kruskal-Wallis (p < 0.05) and Dunn statistical analyses demonstrated differences between the dental cavity shapes when powers III and IV were used. However, the cavities that were made with power III presented dimensions similar to those of the bur used for preparation. We concluded that the power recommended by the manufacturer (III) is the most adequate for use with the CVDentus® system.

Life cannot consist of dreams alone: reflections on advertising and a healthy diet

In this essay we present some thoughts on advertising and a healthy diet in the contemporary world, where consumption plays a highly relevant role. We seek to emphasize two aspects, among many others yet to be explored in the scientific literature in the food and nutritional field: the hegemony of the biomedical paradigm and the fragmentation of human life when advertising campaigns associate food with the idea of a healthy diet. We believe that we cannot merely live through advertisements in which our desires are triggered constantly and where the world is only dreams and the main goal is to sell more and earn more, even using some strategies for dissemination of biomedical and nutritional information. In our opinion, the merger between diet and health, i.e. a healthy diet, must involve enlightenment of the individual including information on quality in the context of social life in order to achieve the ideal of happiness. Individuals whose identities are fully formed both in dreams and reality can boldly seek knowledge and think about themselves in the world context, as well as zeal for their diet and health
