Magnetic Field Effects on the Far-Infrared Absorption in Mn_12-acetate
We report the far-infrared spectra of the molecular nanomagnet Mn_12-acetate
(Mn_12) as a function of temperature (5-300 K) and magnetic field (0-17 T). The
large number of observed vibrational modes is related to the low symmetry of
the molecule, and they are grouped together in clusters. Analysis of the mode
character based on molecular dynamics simulations and model compound studies
shows that all vibrations are complex; motion from a majority of atoms in the
molecule contribute to most modes. Three features involving intramolecular
vibrations of the Mn_12 molecule centered at 284, 306 and 409 cm-1 show changes
with applied magnetic field. The structure near 284 cm displays the
largest deviation with field and is mainly intensity related. A comparison
between the temperature dependent absorption difference spectra, the gradual
low-temperature cluster framework distortion as assessed by neutron diffraction
data, and field dependent absorption difference spectra suggests that this mode
may involve Mn motion in the crown.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, PRB accepte
Nip1p associates with 40 S ribosomes and the Prt1p subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 3 and is required for efficient translation initiation
Nip1p is an essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein that was identified in a screen for temperature conditional (ts) mutants exhibiting defects in nuclear transport. New results indicate that Nip1p has a primary role in translation initiation. Polysome profiles indicate that cells depleted of Nip1p and nip1-1 cells are defective in translation initiation, a conclusion that is supported by a reduced rate of protein synthesis in Nip1p- depleted cells. Nip1p cosediments with free 40 S ribosomal subunits and polysomal preinitiation complexes, but not with free or elongating 80 S ribosomes or 60 S subunits. Nip1p can be isolated in an about 670-kDa complex containing polyhistidine-tagged Prt1p, a subunit of translation initiation factor 3, by binding to Ni2+NTA-agarose beads in a manner completely dependent on the tagged form of Prt1p. The nip1-1 ts growth defect was suppressed by the deletion of the ribosomal protein, RPL46. Also, nip1-1 mutant cells are hypersensitive to paromomycin. These results suggest that Nip1p is a subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 3 required for efficient translation initiation

Boundary conditions of workplace coaching outcomes
Purpose
In order to address the need for greater understanding about the occupational and practice determinants of effective workplace coaching, this study examines the associations of two coaching practice factors (coaching format and external versus internal coaching provision), and coacheesâ job complexity with perceived outcomes from coaching.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey of 161 individuals who had received workplace coaching was conducted. Participants provided data on two outcome criteria (self-reported work well-being and personal effectiveness at work).
Findings
Analysis indicated that external coaches and blended format coaching were most strongly associated with work well-being outcomes. Our examination of interaction effects showed that coaching provided by external coaches was more strongly associated with outcomes for individuals working in the most complex job roles.
Originality/value
The original contribution of our findings are in terms of the implications for coaches, managers and HR practitioners by showing how coaching can be implemented differentially and most effectively based on desired outcome criteria and features of coacheesâ job situations
Equation of state and phonon frequency calculations of diamond at high pressures
The pressure-volume relationship and the zone-center optical phonon frequency
of cubic diamond at pressures up to 600 GPa have been calculated based on
Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation and the
Generalized Gradient Approximation. Three different approaches, viz. a
pseudopotential method applied in the basis of plane waves, an all-electron
method relying on Augmented Plane Waves plus Local Orbitals, and an
intermediate approach implemented in the basis of Projector Augmented Waves
have been used. All these methods and approximations yield consistent results
for the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus and the volume dependence of
the mode Grueneisen parameter of diamond. The results are at variance with
recent precise measurements up to 140 GPa. Possible implications for the
experimental pressure determination based on the ruby luminescence method are
discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Towards a Criminology of the Domestic
Criminology has paid insufficient attention to the âdomesticâ arena, as a locale that is being reconfigured through technological and social developments in ways that require us to reconsider offending and victimisation. This article addresses this lacuna. We take up Campbell's (2016) challenge that criminology needs to develop more sophisticated models of place and space, particularly in relation to changing patterns of consumption and leisure activity and the opportunities to offend in relation to these from within the domestic arena
Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with
states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed
as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+,
\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1})
= 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let
Intrauterine devices and endometrial cancer risk : a pooled analysis of the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium
Intrauterine devices (IUDs), long-acting and reversible contraceptives, induce a number of immunological and biochemical changes in the uterine environment that could affect endometrial cancer (EC) risk. We addressed this relationship through a pooled analysis of data collected in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium. We combined individual-level data from 4 cohort and 14 case-control studies, in total 8,801 EC cases and 15,357 controls. Using multivariable logistic regression, we estimated pooled odds ratios (pooled-ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for EC risk associated with ever use, type of device, ages at first and last use, duration of use and time since last use, stratified by study and adjusted for confounders. Ever use of IUDs was inversely related to EC risk (pooled-ORâ=â0.81, 95% CIâ=â0.74-0.90). Compared with never use, reduced risk of EC was observed for inert IUDs (pooled-ORâ=â0.69, 95% CIâ=â0.58-0.82), older age at first use (â„35 years pooled-ORâ=â0.53, 95% CIâ=â0.43-0.67), older age at last use (â„45 years pooled-ORâ=â0.60, 95% CIâ=â0.50-0.72), longer duration of use (â„10 years pooled-ORâ=â0.61, 95% CIâ=â0.52-0.71) and recent use (within 1 year of study entry pooled-ORâ=â0.39, 95% CIâ=â0.30-0.49). Future studies are needed to assess the respective roles of detection biases and biologic effects related to foreign body responses in the endometrium, heavier bleeding (and increased clearance of carcinogenic cells) and localized hormonal changes
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
