Random close packing of granular matter
We propose an interpretation of the random close packing of granular
materials as a phase transition, and discuss the possibility of experimental

Test of a theoretical equation of state for elemental solids and liquids
We propose a means for constructing highly accurate equations of state (EOS)
for elemental solids and liquids essentially from first principles, based upon
a particular decomposition of the underlying condensed matter Hamiltonian for
the nuclei and electrons. We also point out that at low pressures the neglect
of anharmonic and electron-phonon terms, both contained in this formalism,
results in errors of less than 5% in the thermal parts of the thermodynamic
functions. Then we explicitly display the forms of the remaining terms in the
EOS, commenting on the use of experiment and electronic structure theory to
evaluate them. We also construct an EOS for Aluminum and compare the resulting
Hugoniot with data up to 5 Mbar, both to illustrate our method and to see
whether the approximation of neglecting anharmonicity et al. remains viable to
such high pressures. We find a level of agreement with experiment that is

A Step Beyond the Bounce: Bubble Dynamics in Quantum Phase Transitions
We study the dynamical evolution of a phase interface or bubble in the
context of a \lambda \phi^4 + g \phi^6 scalar quantum field theory. We use a
self-consistent mean-field approximation derived from a 2PI effective action to
construct an initial value problem for the expectation value of the quantum
field and two-point function. We solve the equations of motion numerically in
(1+1)-dimensions and compare the results to the purely classical evolution. We
find that the quantum fluctuations dress the classical profile, affecting both
the early time expansion of the bubble and the behavior upon collision with a

Hidden secrets of deformation: Impact-induced compaction within a CV chondrite
The CV3 Allende is one of the most extensively studied meteorites in worldwide collections. It is currently classified as S1âessentially unshockedâusing the classification scheme of Stöffler et al. (1991), however recent modelling suggests the low porosity observed in Allende indicates the body should have undergone compaction-related deformation. In this study, we detail previously undetected evidence of impact through use of Electron Backscatter Diffraction mapping to identify deformation microstructures in chondrules, AOAs and matrix grains. Our results demonstrate that forsterite-rich chondrules commonly preserve crystal-plastic microstructures (particularly at their margins); that low-angle boundaries in deformed matrix grains of olivine have a preferred orientation; and that disparities in deformation occur between chondrules, surrounding and non-adjacent matrix grains. We find heterogeneous compaction effects present throughout the matrix, consistent with a highly porous initial material. Given the spatial distribution of these crystal-plastic deformation microstructures, we suggest that this is evidence that Allende has undergone impact-induced compaction from an initially heterogeneous and porous parent body. We suggest that current shock classifications (Stöffler et al., 1991) relying upon data from chondrule interiors do not constrain the complete shock history of a sample
Primary hyperaldosteronism caused by adrenocortical carcinoma
Since the syndrome of primary hyperaldosteronism was described by Jerome Conn in 1955, over 300 patients with this disorder have been identified in the medical centers of Vanderbilt University and the University of Michigan. The most frequent cause of this endocrinopathy has been a solitary adenoma of the adrenal cortex (72%); bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia has been the cause of primary hyperaldosteronism in 27% of cases; less frequently, the cause has been multiple and/or bilateral adenomas (1%). During the last 4 years in these 2 medical centers, we have encountered 3 patients who have had biochemically proven primary hyperaldosteronism due to adrenocortical carcinoma. Each of these unusual cases is summarized with review of the recent literature . Pleiotropic associations of heterozygosity for the SERPINA1 Z allele in the UK Biobank
Homozygosity for the SERPINA1 Z allele causes α1-antitrypsin deficiency, a rare condition that can cause lung and liver disease. However, the effects of Z allele heterozygosity on nonrespiratory phenotypes, and on lung function in the general population, remain unclear.
We conducted a large, population-based study to determine Z allele effects on >2400 phenotypes in the UK Biobank (N=303â353).
Z allele heterozygosity was strongly associated with increased height (ÎČ=1.02â
cm, p=3.91Ă10â68), and with other nonrespiratory phenotypes including increased risk of gall bladder disease, reduced risk of heart disease and lower blood pressure, reduced risk of osteoarthritis and reduced bone mineral density, increased risk of headache and enlarged prostate, as well as with blood biomarkers of liver function. Heterozygosity was associated with higher height-adjusted forced expiratory volume in 1â
s (FEV1) (ÎČ=19.36â
mL, p=9.21Ă10â4) and FEV1/forced vital capacity (ÎČ=0.0031, p=1.22Ă10â5) in nonsmokers, whereas in smokers, this protective effect was abolished. Furthermore, we show for the first time that sex modifies the association of the Z allele on lung function.
We conclude that Z allele heterozygosity and homozygosity exhibit opposing effects on lung function in the UK population, and that these associations are modified by smoking and sex. In exploratory analyses, heterozygosity for the Z allele also showed pleiotropic associations with nonrespiratory health-related traits and disease risk
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino

Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
