Its fruits are characterized by the typical flavor and aroma, being the pulp used in the production of juices, ice cream and liqueurs. Although it is also used extensively in folk medicine as a tea, recently it has became an important raw material for the industry due the antioxidant properties of its essential oil.. Surinan cherry tree adapts to different environmental conditions because of the great genetic variability, therefore the evaluation of potential genotypes with high leaf biomass and essential oil production to meet the industry requirements is necessary. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to evaluate the essential oil yield and composition and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of different genotypes of surinan cherry tree cultivated at the Canguiri Experimental Station of Federal University of Parana and to develop a vegetative propagation protocol for the selected plant materials. . The isolation of the essential oil samples from leaves was performed by hydrodistillation and the chemical composition analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometer (GC / MS). The obtained samples were then used in bioassays to evaluate antioxidant and antibacterial activities. For te vegetative propagation experiments, different substrates (Tropstrato®, sand and vermiculite), indolbutyric acid (IBA) concentrations were evaluated for the rooting of plant material collected in different seasons and those obtained after rejuvenation methods (pruning and minicutting). it was observed great chemical variability in the essential oils composition of the studied genotypes, being observed six distinct chromatographic profiles. The results of the biological tests confirmed the dependence on the antioxidant activity according to the essential oil composition. for The season in which the plant material was collected showed effect in the percentage of the essential oil constituents and the highest antioxidant activity was observed in samples collected during the summer and spring insamples from . This result was probably due to differences in the concentration of the germacrone compound in the essential oil. Antibacterial activity was considered moderate to poor, with the best results obtained on Escherichia coli, with no difference between seasons. The best results in the vegetative propagation by stem cuttings were found with the rejuvenation methods using the commercial substrate Tropstrato® and with plant material collected in the summer. Higher rooting percentages were obtained without the application of IBA. In stem cuttings from plant material that did not were submitted to any rejuvenation method, the root formation did not occur, regardless of the collection season. Keywords: Surinan cherry tree. LUMIO: achieving autonomous operations for Lunar exploration with a CubeSat

    Get PDF
The Lunar Meteoroid Impacts Observer (LUMIO) is one of the four projects selected within ESA’s SysNova competition to develop a small satellite for scientific and technology demonstration purposes to be deployed by a mother ship around the Moon. The mission utilizes a 12U form-factor CubeSat which carries the LUMIO-Cam, an optical instrument capable of detecting light flashes in the visible spectrum to continuously monitor and process the meteoroids impacts. In this paper, we will describe the mission concept and focus on the performance of a novel navigation concept using Moon images taken as byproduct of the LUMIO-Cam operations. This new approach will considerably limit the operations burden on ground, aiming at autonomous orbit-attitude navigation and control. Furthermore, an efficient and autonomous strategy for collection, processing, categorization, and storage of payload data is also described to cope with the limited contact time and downlink bandwidth. Since all communications have to go via a Lunar Orbiter (mothership), all commands and telemetry/data will have to be forwarded to/from the mother ship. This will prevent quasi-real time operations and will be the first time for CubeSats as they have never flown so far from Earth

Designing microenvironments for optimal outcomes in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine: From biopolymers to culturing conditions

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells have been extensively used for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications due to their ease of isolation and expansion and their ability to differentiate towards various lineages of mesodermal origin. Despite these properties, their clinical potential is often hampered by the simplicity of the in vitro environment and its inability to resemble the complex in vivo niche. Herein, different microenvironmental cues (e.g. surface topography, substrate stiffness, mechanical stimulation, oxygen tension and co-culture systems) that have been utilised to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells are discussed. The authors would like to acknowledge the following entities for financial support: H2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks 2015 Tendon Therapy Train project (Grant No. 676338); Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) / European Regional Development Fund (Grant Number 13/RC/2073); and SFI Career Development Award (Grant Number 15/CDA/3629)

Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Get PDF
Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States. Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

Search for stop and higgsino production using diphoton Higgs boson decays

Results are presented of a search for a "natural" supersymmetry scenario with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. It is assumed that only the supersymmetric partners of the top-quark (stop) and the Higgs boson (higgsino) are accessible. Events are examined in which there are two photons forming a Higgs boson candidate, and at least two b-quark jets. In 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded in the CMS experiment, no evidence of a signal is found and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are set, excluding the stop mass below 360 to 410 GeV, depending on the higgsino mass
