    Measurements of D0D^{0} and DD^{*} Production in pp + pp Collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

    We report measurements of charmed-hadron (D0D^{0}, DD^{*}) production cross sections at mid-rapidity in pp + pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Charmed hadrons were reconstructed via the hadronic decays D0Kπ+D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{+}, D+D0π+Kπ+π+D^{*+}\rightarrow D^{0}\pi^{+}\rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{+} and their charge conjugates, covering the pTp_T range of 0.6-2.0 GeV/cc and 2.0-6.0 GeV/cc for D0D^{0} and D+D^{*+}, respectively. From this analysis, the charm-pair production cross section at mid-rapidity is dσ/dyy=0ccˉd\sigma/dy|_{y=0}^{c\bar{c}} = 170 ±\pm 45 (stat.) 59+38^{+38}_{-59} (sys.) μ\mub. The extracted charm-pair cross section is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The transverse momentum differential cross section is found to be consistent with the upper bound of a Fixed-Order Next-to-Leading Logarithm calculation.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures.     Inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow in Au + Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7 - 39 GeV

    A systematic study is presented for centrality, transverse momentum (pTp_T) and pseudorapidity (η\eta) dependence of the inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow (v2v_2) at midrapidity(η<1.0|\eta| < 1.0) in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV. The results obtained with different methods, including correlations with the event plane reconstructed in a region separated by a large pseudorapidity gap and 4-particle cumulants (v24v_2{4}), are presented in order to investigate non-flow correlations and v2v_2 fluctuations. We observe that the difference between v22v_2{2} and v24v_2{4} is smaller at the lower collision energies. Values of v2v_2, scaled by the initial coordinate space eccentricity, v2/εv_{2}/\varepsilon, as a function of pTp_T are larger in more central collisions, suggesting stronger collective flow develops in more central collisions, similar to the results at higher collision energies. These results are compared to measurements at higher energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 and 200 GeV) and at the Large Hadron Collider (Pb + Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV). The v2(pT)v_2(p_T) values for fixed pTp_T rise with increasing collision energy within the pTp_T range studied (<2GeV/c< 2 {\rm GeV}/c). A comparison to viscous hydrodynamic simulations is made to potentially help understand the energy dependence of v2(pT)v_{2}(p_{T}). We also compare the v2v_2 results to UrQMD and AMPT transport model calculations, and physics implications on the dominance of partonic versus hadronic phases in the system created at Beam Energy Scan (BES) energies are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures.     Single Spin Asymmetry ANA_N in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

    We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry ANA_N at the center of mass energy s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The ANA_N was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared tt range 0.003t0.0350.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035 \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of ANA_N and its tt-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this s\sqrt{s}, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model.     Geographic range did not confer resilience to extinction in terrestrial vertebrates at the end-Triassic crisis

    Rates of extinction vary greatly through geological time, with losses particularly concentrated in mass extinctions. Species duration at other times varies greatly, but the reasons for this are unclear. Geographical range correlates with lineage duration amongst marine invertebrates, but it is less clear how far this generality extends to other groups in other habitats. It is also unclear whether a wide geographical distribution makes groups more likely to survive mass extinctions. Here we test for extinction selectivity amongst terrestrial vertebrates across the end-Triassic event. We demonstrate that terrestrial vertebrate clades with larger geographical ranges were more resilient to extinction than those with smaller ranges throughout the Triassic and Jurassic. However, this relationship weakened with increasing proximity to the end-Triassic mass extinction, breaking down altogether across the event itself. We demonstrate that these findings are not a function of sampling biases; a perennial issue in studies of this kind

    Neutral pion cross section and spin asymmetries at intermediate pseudorapidity in polarized proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV

    The differential cross section and spin asymmetries for neutral pions produced within the intermediate pseudorapidity range 0.8 < η < 2.0 in polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200  GeV are presented. Neutral pions were detected using the end cap electromagnetic calorimeter in the STAR detector at RHIC. The cross section was measured over a transverse momentum range of 5 < p[subscript T] < 16  GeV/c and is found to agree with a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A[subscript LL] is measured in the same pseudorapidity range and spans a range of Bjorken-x down to x ≈ 0.01. The measured A[subscript LL] is consistent with model predictions for varying degrees of gluon polarization. The parity-violating asymmetry A[subscript L] is also measured and found to be consistent with zero. The transverse single-spin asymmetry A[subscript N] is measured over a previously unexplored kinematic range in Feynman-x and p[subscript T]. Such measurements may aid our understanding of the onset and kinematic dependence of the large asymmetries observed at more forward pseudorapidity (η ≈ 3) and their underlying mechanisms. The A[subscript N] results presented are consistent with a twist-3 model prediction of a small asymmetry over the present kinematic range.United States. Dept. of Energy.     Implementation of an insecticide-treated net subsidy scheme under a public-private partnership for malaria control in Tanzania – challenges in implementation

    BACKGROUND: In the past decade there has been increasing visibility of malaria control efforts at the national and international levels. The factors that have enhanced this scenario are the availability of proven interventions such as artemisinin-based combination therapy, the wide scale use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and a renewed emphasis in indoor residual house-spraying. Concurrently, there has been a window of opportunity of financial commitments from organizations such as the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), the President's Malaria Initiative and the World Bank Booster programme. METHODS: The case study uses the health policy analysis framework to analyse the implementation of a public-private partnership approach embarked upon by the government of Tanzania in malaria control - 'The Tanzania National Voucher Scheme'- and in this synthesis, emphasis is on the challenges faced by the scheme during the pre-implementation (2001 - 2004) and implementation phases (2004 - 2005). Qualitative research tools used include: document review, interview with key informants, stakeholder's analysis, force-field analysis, time line of events, policy characteristic analysis and focus group discussions. The study is also complemented by a cross-sectional survey, which was conducted at the Rufiji Health Demographic Surveillance Site, where a cohort of women of child-bearing age were followed up regarding access and use of ITNs. RESULTS: The major challenges observed include: the re-introduction of taxes on mosquito nets and related products, procurement and tendering procedures in the implementation of the GFATM, and organizational arrangements and free delivery of mosquito nets through a Presidential initiative. CONCLUSION: The lessons gleaned from this synthesis include: (a) the consistency of the stakeholders with a common vision, was an important strength in overcoming obstacles, (b) senior politicians often steered the policy agenda when the policy in question was a 'crisis event', the stakes and the visibility were high, (c) national stakeholders in policy making have an advantage in strengthening alliances with international organizations, where the latter can become extremely influential in solving bottlenecks as the need arises, and (d) conflict can be turned into an opportunity, for example the Presidential initiative has inadvertently provided Tanzania with important lessons in the organization of 'catch-up' campaigns
