Characterization of Moment of Inertia Variations by Holographic Interferometry
Holographic interferometry (HI) is a powerful tool for mapping of surface defects. In conjunction with various stressing techniques [l–4], it offers an NDT tool for the detection of flaws within the volume of materials. The method is advantageous for integrity characterization of components to serve under mechanical stress, where the detailed shape, size and depth of the flaw within the material are of no interest. For most applications, where integrity is tested, the moment of inertia may be used as a measure for classification of the product and for the estimation of its reliability. The presence of volumetric flaws, when the sample is under loading, is expressed in the holographic interferogram. The exterma of the fringe pattern are used for determination of the displacement distribution. The second derivative of the displacement distribution is related to the bending moment and the moment of inertia. The moment of inertia may be further processed to obtain a function free from degrading influence of the specific measuring system employed [5]
Effect of Peierls transition in armchair carbon nanotube on dynamical behaviour of encapsulated fullerene
The changes of dynamical behaviour of a single fullerene molecule inside an
armchair carbon nanotube caused by the structural Peierls transition in the
nanotube are considered. The structures of the smallest C20 and Fe@C20
fullerenes are computed using the spin-polarized density functional theory.
Significant changes of the barriers for motion along the nanotube axis and
rotation of these fullerenes inside the (8,8) nanotube are found at the Peierls
transition. It is shown that the coefficients of translational and rotational
diffusions of these fullerenes inside the nanotube change by several orders of
magnitude. The possibility of inverse orientational melting, i.e. with a
decrease of temperature, for the systems under consideration is predicted.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Hydroxy double salts intercalated with Mn(II) complexes as potential contrast agents
A series of Mn(II) aminophosphonate complexes were successfully synthesized and intercalated into the hydroxy double salt [Zn5(OH)8]Cl2·yH2O. Complex incorporation led to an increase in the interlayer spacing from 7.8 to 10–12 Å. Infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of the characteristic vibration peaks of the Mn(II) complexes in the intercalates' spectra, indicating successful incorporation. The complex-loaded composites had somewhat lower proton relaxivities than the pure complexes. Nevertheless, these intercalates may have use as MRI contrast agents for patients with poor kidney function, where traditional Gd(III)-based contrast agents cause severe renal failure

Vortex counting from field theory
The vortex partition function in 2d N = (2,2) U(N) gauge theory is derived
from the field theoretical point of view by using the moduli matrix approach.
The character for the tangent space at each moduli space fixed point is written
in terms of the moduli matrix, and then the vortex partition function is
obtained by applying the localization formula. We find that dealing with the
fermionic zero modes is crucial to obtain the vortex partition function with
the anti-fundamental and adjoint matters in addition to the fundamental chiral
multiplets. The orbifold vortex partition function is also investigated from
the field theoretical point of view.Comment: 21 pages, no figure
Privatization and State Capacity in Postcommunist Society
Economists have used cross-national regression analysis to argue that postcommunist economic failure is the result of inadequate adherence liberal economic policies. Sociologists have relied on case study data to show that postcommunist economic failure is the outcome of too close adherence to liberal policy recommendations, which has led to an erosion of state effectiveness, and thus produced poor economic performance. The present paper advances a version of this statist theory based on a quantitative analysis of mass privatization programs in the postcommunist world. We argue that rapid large-scale privatization creates severe supply and demand shocks for enterprises, thereby inducing firm failure. The resulting erosion of tax revenues leads to a fiscal crisis for the state, and severely weakens its capacity and bureaucratic character. This, in turn, reacts back on the enterprise sector, as the state can no longer support the institutions necessary for the effective functioning of a modern economy, thus resulting in deindustrialization. Using cross-national regression techniques we find that the implementation of mass privatization programs negatively impacts measures of economic growth, state capacity and the security of property rights.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40192/3/wp806.pd
The association of HFE gene H63D polymorphism with endurance athlete status and aerobic capacity: novel findings and a meta-analysis.
PURPOSE: Iron is an important component of the oxygen-binding proteins and may be critical to optimal athletic performance. Previous studies have suggested that the G allele of C/G rare variant (rs1799945), which causes H63D amino acid replacement, in the HFE is associated with elevated iron indexes and may give some advantage in endurance-oriented sports. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between the HFE H63D polymorphism and elite endurance athlete status in Japanese and Russian populations, aerobic capacity and to perform a meta-analysis using current findings and three previous studies. METHODS: The study involved 315 international-level endurance athletes (255 Russian and 60 Japanese) and 809 healthy controls (405 Russian and 404 Japanese). Genotyping was performed using micro-array analysis or by PCR. VO2max in 46 male Russian endurance athletes was determined using gas analysis system. RESULTS: The frequency of the iron-increasing CG/GG genotypes was significantly higher in Russian (38.0 vs 24.9%; OR 1.85, P = 0.0003) and Japanese (13.3 vs 5.0%; OR 2.95, P = 0.011) endurance athletes compared to ethnically matched controls. The meta-analysis using five cohorts (two French, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian; 586 athletes and 1416 controls) showed significant prevalence of the CG/GG genotypes in endurance athletes compared to controls (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.58-2.45; P = 1.7 × 10-9). Furthermore, the HFE G allele was associated with high V̇O2max in male athletes [CC: 61.8 (6.1), CG/GG: 66.3 (7.8) ml/min/kg; P = 0.036]. CONCLUSIONS: We have shown that the HFE H63D polymorphism is strongly associated with elite endurance athlete status, regardless ethnicities and aerobic capacity in Russian athletes
Physics of leptoquarks in precision experiments and at particle colliders
We present a comprehensive review of physics effects generated by leptoquarks
(LQs), i.e., hypothetical particles that can turn quarks into leptons and vice
versa, of either scalar or vector nature. These considerations include
discussion of possible completions of the Standard Model that contain LQ
fields. The main focus of the review is on those LQ scenarios that are not
problematic with regard to proton stability. We accordingly concentrate on the
phenomenology of light leptoquarks that is relevant for precision experiments
and particle colliders. Important constraints on LQ interactions with matter
are derived from precision low-energy observables such as electric dipole
moments, (g-2) of charged leptons, atomic parity violation, neutral meson
mixing, Kaon, B, and D meson decays, etc. We provide a general analysis of
indirect constraints on the strength of LQ interactions with the quarks and
leptons to make statements that are as model independent as possible. We
address complementary constraints that originate from electroweak precision
measurements, top, and Higgs physics. The Higgs physics analysis we present
covers not only the most recent but also expected results from the Large Hadron
Collider (LHC). We finally discuss direct LQ searches. Current experimental
situation is summarized and self-consistency of assumptions that go into
existing accelerator-based searches is discussed. A progress in making
next-to-leading order predictions for both pair and single LQ productions at
colliders is also outlined.Comment: 136 pages, 22 figures, typographical errors fixed, the Physics

Proteome Regulation during Olea europaea Fruit Development
Widespread in the Mediterranean basin, Olea europaea trees are gaining worldwide popularity for the nutritional and cancer-protective properties of the oil, mechanically extracted from ripe fruits. Fruit development is a physiological process with remarkable impact on the modulation of the biosynthesis of compounds affecting the quality of the drupes as well as the final composition of the olive oil. Proteomics offers the possibility to dig deeper into the major changes during fruit development, including the important phase of ripening, and to classify temporal patterns of protein accumulation occurring during these complex physiological processes. In this work, we started monitoring the proteome variations associated with olive fruit development by using comparative proteomics coupled to mass spectrometry. Proteins extracted from drupes at three different developmental stages were separated on 2-DE and subjected to image analysis. 247 protein spots were revealed as differentially accumulated. Proteins were identified from a total of 121 spots and discussed in relation to olive drupe metabolic changes occurring during fruit development. In order to evaluate if changes observed at the protein level were consistent with changes of mRNAs, proteomic data produced in the present work were compared with transcriptomic data elaborated during previous studies. This study identifies a number of proteins responsible for quality traits of cv. Coratina, with particular regard to proteins associated to the metabolism of fatty acids, phenolic and aroma compounds. Proteins involved in fruit photosynthesis have been also identified and their pivotal contribution in oleogenesis has been discussed. To date, this study represents the first characterization of the olive fruit proteome during development, providing new insights into fruit metabolism and oil accumulation process
Search for CP violation in D+→ϕπ+ and D+s→K0Sπ+ decays
A search for CP violation in D + → ϕπ + decays is performed using data collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. The CP -violating asymmetry is measured to be (−0.04 ± 0.14 ± 0.14)% for candidates with K − K + mass within 20 MeV/c 2 of the ϕ meson mass. A search for a CP -violating asymmetry that varies across the ϕ mass region of the D + → K − K + π + Dalitz plot is also performed, and no evidence for CP violation is found. In addition, the CP asymmetry in the D+s→K0Sπ+ decay is measured to be (0.61 ± 0.83 ± 0.14)%
