    Meta-analysis of the efficacy of melatonin implants for improving reproductive performance in sheep

    To evaluate the efficacy of melatonin implants on increasing the production of lambs, a meta-analysis was performed based on the results of 139 experiments carried out in Spain and published in 56 scientific publications or conference proceedings. To assess the effects on fertility, the relative risk (RR) was calculated and, in the case of prolificacy and fecundity, the analysis was based on raw mean difference (D) and the standardized difference between means (d) and their corresponding confidence intervals. In addition, the experiments were stratified by the productive aptitude of the flocks, breed, time of year, and age. For fertility, the mean RR was 1.29, which indicated that the treatment with melatonin increased significantly (by 29%) the probability of pregnancy. For prolificacy, overall D was 0.08 (d = 0.9089); i.e., the groups treated with melatonin increased their litter size by 0.08 lambs/lambing relative to the control groups. Ultimately, treatment with melatonin increased fecundity significantly (0.25 extra lambs/ewe treated) (d = 6.3188), and this trend was evident in all of the stratified datasets. In all cases, there was significant (p < 0.001) heterogeneity and bias. In conclusion, in Spain, melatonin implants had a significant effect on the probability that a ewe became pregnant, increased the number of lambs born per lambing, which ultimately increased the number of lambs born per treated ewe. In addition to confirm the results of previous descriptive reviews in the scientific literature, the metaanalysis made use of a statistical tool that synthesizes and estimates more precisely the effect of this hormone on sheep reproduction. Se ha realizado un meta-análisis sobre la eficacia del uso de implantes de melatonina en ovino en España, analizando los resultados de 139 experiencias publicadas en 56 publicaciones o comunicaciones. Para la fertilidad se han calculado los riesgos relativos (RR) y para la prolificidad y fecundidad se han calculado la diferencia no estandarizada o bruta entre medias (D) y la diferencia estandarizada entre medias (d). Los resultados se han estratificado por aptitud productiva de los rebaños, raza, época del año y edad. Se han calculado los estadísticos de heterogeneidad y el posible sesgo entre publicaciones. Para la fertilidad, el RR medio fue 1,29, lo que significa que la melatonina incrementó de manera significativa las posibilidades de parto un 29%. Para la prolificidad, la D global fue 0,08 (d = 0,9089), es decir, los grupos tratados incrementaron su prolificidad 0,08 corderos/parto. El tratamiento con melatonina aumentó de manera significativa la fecundidad, con 0,25 corderos extra producidos/oveja tratada (d = 6,3188). En todos los casos, la heterogeneidad y el sesgo calculados fueron significativos (p < 0,001). En conclusión, el metaanálisis realizado ha revelado un efecto significativo de la melatonina en España sobre la posibilidad de que una oveja quede gestante, además de elevar el número de corderos nacidos por parto, lo que al final incrementa el número de corderos nacidos por oveja tratada. Esto no ha hecho sino confirmar lo revisado previamente en la literatura de manera narrativa, mediante una herramienta estadística, que sintetiza y estima de manera más precisa el efecto de esta hormona

    Electron transport through rectifying self-assembled monolayer diodes on silicon: Fermi level pinning at the molecule-metal interface

    We report the synthesis and characterization of molecular rectifying diodes on silicon using sequential grafting of self-assembled monolayers of alkyl chains bearing a pi group at their outer end (Si/sigma-pi/metal junctions). We investigate the structure-performance relationships of these molecular devices and we examine to what extent the nature of the pi end-group (change in the energy position of their molecular orbitals) drives the properties of these molecular diodes. For all the pi-groups investigated here, we observe rectification behavior. These results extend our preliminary work using phenyl and thiophene groups (S. Lenfant et al., Nano Letters 3, 741 (2003)).The experimental current-voltage curves are analyzed with a simple analytical model, from which we extract the energy position of the molecular orbital of the pi-group in resonance with the Fermi energy of the electrodes. We report the experimental studies of the band lineup in these silicon/alkyl-pi conjugated molecule/metal junctions. We conclude that Fermi level pinning at the pi-group/metal interface is mainly responsible for the observed absence of dependence of the rectification effect on the nature of the pi-groups, even though they were chosen to have significant variations in their electronic molecular orbitalsComment: To be published in J.     Anomaly Detection for Diagnosing Failures in a Centrifugal Compressor Train

    Predicting machine failures is of the utmost importance in industrial systems as it can turn expensive crashes and repair costs into affordable maintenance costs. To this end, this paper presents preliminary work for detecting failures in a centrifugal compressor train based on sensorial data. We show the detection capabilities of a two-step process consisting of: (1) a preprocessing step to reduce the dimensionality of the input data using Principal Component Analysis, and (2) an anomaly detection step using the Mahalanobis distance to detect anomalous observations on the sensors' data. The experiments using real-world data demonstrate the feasibility of our approach and the ability of the method to detect the failures eight days in advance

    Molecular basis of allergen cross-reactivity: Non-specific lipid transfer proteins from wheat flour and peach fruit as models

    Peach non-specific lipid transfer protein (Pru p 3; nsLTP) has been characterized as the major food allergen in the adult Mediterranean population. Its wheat homologous protein, Tri a 14 has a relevant inhalant allergen in occupational baker's asthma. Different sensitization patterns to these allergens have been found in patients with this latter disorder. The objective of the present study was to characterize IgE epitopes of Tri a 14 and to compare them with those of Pru p 3 using three complementary strategies: the analysis of IgE-binding capacity of decapeptides bound to membrane, the identification of mimotopes using a phage display random peptide library, and the analysis of the surface electrostatic potential of both allergens. Thus, synthetic overlapping decapeptides, covering the Pru p 3 and Tri a 14 amino acid sequences, were used to identify sequential regions involved in recognition of IgE from baker's asthma patients sensitized to both nsLTPs. A phage display library was screened with total IgE from the same patients, and positive clones sequentially selected using the purified allergens, allowed to identify mimotopes (conformational epitopes) of Tri a 14 and Pru p 3. Both sequential regions and mimotopes were localized in the corresponding 3D molecular surface and their electrostatic properties were analyzed. Common sequential regions with strong IgE-binding capacity (residues 31–40 and 71–80) were identified in Tri a 14 and Pru p 3, whereas regions Tri a 1451–60 and Pru p 311–20 were found specific of each allergen. A major conformational epitope (mimotope), L34H35N36R39S40S42D43G74V75L77P78Y79T80, which comprised the two common sequential epitopes, was located in Tri a 14, and a very similar one in Pru p 3. However, differences were detected on the surface electrostatic potential of both mimotopes: a first part (around residues 31–45) showed similar positive features in both allergens, whereas a second part (around residues 74–80) was markedly negative in Tri a 14 but neutral-positive in Pru p 3. Tri a 14 and Pru p 3 have a similar conformational region involved in IgE-binding, although their electrostatic features are different. Additionally, common and specific sequential IgE-binding regions were mapped in both allergens. These findings could be instrumental in understanding the cross-reactivity and specificity of sensitization to both homologous allergens

    TWO-SCALE MODELLING OF THE CONCENTRATION POLARIZATION IN A REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANE

    Abstract In the design and control of reverse osmosis desalination plants, the clean water flux, which passes through the membranes, is the most important variable. Flux depends on several parameters, such as the membrane permeability or the temperature, but mainly on the salt concentration on the membrane surface. The salt concentration is easily measured in the bulk of the feed, but not on the membrane surface, where it should be estimated. The concentration polarization creates an unwanted increase of the salt concentration between the bulk side and the membrane surface. The polarization effect is due to the convective transport of salt molecules by the water flow to the boundary layer of the membrane, and their subsequent blockage by the membrane itself. A correct estimation of the concentration polarization is fundamental to predict the clean water flux, and finally, to be able to carry out a good design and control of the desalination plant. Several models have been proposed in the literature to calculate the concentration polarization (or the salt concentration on the membrane surface). This paper presents a new model, which aims to solve some of the disadvantages of the previous models

    Tribological and electrical study of Fluorinated Diazonium Films as dry lubricants for electrical contacts

    The need to operate in extreme environmental conditions (ultra high vacuum, high temperatures, aerospatial, etc.) and the miniaturisation toward microelectromechanical system is demanding new materials in the field of low-level electrical contacts lubrication. A dry and chemically immobilised layer avoiding the traditional wet lubricating fluids would have many advantages. We report here the first results on films obtained by the electrochemical reduction of different diazonium salts and their use as protective coatings able to lubricate the metallic surfaces of an electrical contact while preserving at the same time electrical conduction. The physicochemical properties of the films, elaborated from various diazonium salts, were studied by cyclic voltammetry and ATR FT-IR spectroscopy. Atomic force microscope was combined with a home-made wide-range current measurement system to investigate simultaneously the mechanical and electrical interactions between the doped diamond conductive tips and the evaporated gold surfaces coated with the diazonium films. The analysis of the simultaneous mechanical and electrical properties of the films in a nanocontact situation is shown to bring much insight into the electrical contact application

    Fluorinated functionalized EDOT-based conducting films

    Three ethylenedioxithiophene (EDOT) derivatives bearing either perfluoro- or ether perfluoro-alkyl chains were synthesized with the objective to prepare films with dry and chemically immobilized lubrication properties. The corresponding fluorinated PEDOT films were deposited on platinum surface by electropolymerization. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) analyses (both quartz resonant frequency and resonant admittance) of the growing steps are described. The electroactive behavior of the films versus their doping level was followed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) through equivalent circuit fitting procedure and compared to their CV responses. Hysteresis in fit parameters corresponding to capacity and film resistance between the forward and the backward scans are observed and discussed. Control of the chemical structures and charge effects on PEDOT chains are followed by an XPS analysis. From these analyses, it appears that the fluorinated side-arm does not alter both the growing and the electrical properties of the films in respect to the pristine PEDOT taken as reference

    <i>Gaia</i> Data Release 1. Summary of the astrometric, photometric, and survey properties

    Context. At about 1000 days after the launch of Gaia we present the first Gaia data release, Gaia DR1, consisting of astrometry and photometry for over 1 billion sources brighter than magnitude 20.7. Aims. A summary of Gaia DR1 is presented along with illustrations of the scientific quality of the data, followed by a discussion of the limitations due to the preliminary nature of this release. Methods. The raw data collected by Gaia during the first 14 months of the mission have been processed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) and turned into an astrometric and photometric catalogue. Results. Gaia DR1 consists of three components: a primary astrometric data set which contains the positions, parallaxes, and mean proper motions for about 2 million of the brightest stars in common with the HIPPARCOS and Tycho-2 catalogues – a realisation of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) – and a secondary astrometric data set containing the positions for an additional 1.1 billion sources. The second component is the photometric data set, consisting of mean G-band magnitudes for all sources. The G-band light curves and the characteristics of ∼3000 Cepheid and RR-Lyrae stars, observed at high cadence around the south ecliptic pole, form the third component. For the primary astrometric data set the typical uncertainty is about 0.3 mas for the positions and parallaxes, and about 1 mas yr−1 for the proper motions. A systematic component of ∼0.3 mas should be added to the parallax uncertainties. For the subset of ∼94 000 HIPPARCOS stars in the primary data set, the proper motions are much more precise at about 0.06 mas yr−1. For the secondary astrometric data set, the typical uncertainty of the positions is ∼10 mas. The median uncertainties on the mean G-band magnitudes range from the mmag level to ∼0.03 mag over the magnitude range 5 to 20.7. Conclusions. Gaia DR1 is an important milestone ahead of the next Gaia data release, which will feature five-parameter astrometry for all sources. Extensive validation shows that Gaia DR1 represents a major advance in the mapping of the heavens and the availability of basic stellar data that underpin observational astrophysics. Nevertheless, the very preliminary nature of this first Gaia data release does lead to a number of important limitations to the data quality which should be carefully considered before drawing conclusions from the data
