    Tratamiento supervisado por video VDOT en pacientes con tuberculosis pulmonar de un Centro de Salud de Lima. Estudio piloto

    Objective: To report the characteristics of the implementation process of the video supervised treatment (VST) of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in a first level health care center of the Social Security in Peru. Methods: An observational study was carried-out including patients enrolled from 18/09/2018 to 24/09/2019. Eight out of nine patients completed the VST, one patient was transferred to other institution before finishing treatment. One nurse trained at Partners in Health arranged the 727 video calls. Results: adherence to treatment was 100%. Conclusions: VST may be a useful alternative for patients with drug sensitive tuberculosis.Objetivo: Describir las características de la implementación del tratamiento supervisado por video (VDOT) en pacientes con tuberculosis en un establecimiento de salud de la seguridad social del primer nivel de atención en Perú (EsSalud). Material y métodos: Estudio observacional, descriptivo. Los pacientes fueron enrolados de forma prospectiva de 18/09/2018 al 24/09/2019. Ocho de los nueve pacientes seguidos completaron el tratamiento VDOT. Un paciente fue transferido a otro establecimiento de salud antes de terminar el seguimiento. Una enfermera entrenada de Socios En Salud gestionó las 727 video llamadas. Resultados: Se obtuvo una adherencia al tratamiento del 100%. Conclusiones: La estrategia VDOT sería una modalidad alternativa útil en pacientes con tuberculosis sensible

    The prognostic impact of anti-cancer immune response: a novel classification of cancer patients

    Until now, the anatomic extent of tumor (TNM classification) has been, by far, the most important factor to predict the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients. However, in recent years, data collected from large cohorts of human cancers demonstrated that the immune contexture of the primary tumors is an essential prognostic factor for patients' disease-free and overall survival. Global analysis of tumor microenvironment showed that the nature, the functional orientation, the density, and the location of adaptive immune cells within distinct tumor regions influence the risk of relapse events. An immune classification of the patients was proposed based on the density and the immune cell location within the tumor. The immune classification has a prognostic value that is superior to the TNM classification, and tumor invasion is statistically dependent on the host immune reaction. Tumor and immunological markers predicted by systems biology methods are involved in the shaping of an efficient immune reaction and can serve as targets for novel therapeutic approaches. Thus, the strength of the immune reaction could advance our understanding of cancer evolution and have important consequences in clinical practice

    En el 2014 se incorporaron las Prácticas Socio Comunitarias a la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata. Mediante el “Aprendizaje-Servicio”, los y las estudiantes contextualizan los contenidos en los que se están formando al interactuar con la sociedad y su realidad. Se realizó un taller integrando docencia y extensión. Por un lado, participaron docentes e investigadoras/es y alumnos/as y por otro lado, la Cooperativa de Cuidadores Domiciliarios Mar del Plata e instituciones educativas. Se analizaron las deficiencias que poseen los actores de la comunidad respecto al “consumo seguro e informado” de los alimentos. A partir de ello es que las y los estudiantes, con la orientación de sus docentes tutores, recopilaron, analizaron y compararon con la legislación vigente información sobre alimentos light, apto celíaco, bajo en sodio, ultraprocesados y funcionales. Se generaron recursos audiovisuales logrando una comunidad de aprendizaje consciente de los criterios para seleccionar un alimento.In 2014, the Socio-Community Practices were incorporated into the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Mar del Plata. Through “Service-Learning”, the students contextualize the contents in which they are being trained by interacting with society and its reality. A workshop was held integrating teaching and extension. On the one hand, teachers and researchers and students participated, and on the other hand, the Mar del Plata Home Caregiver Cooperative and educational institutions. The deficiencies that the community actors have regarding the “safe and informed consumption” of food were analyzed. Based on this, the students, with the guidance of their tutors, collected, analyzed and compared information on light foods, celiac-friendly, low-sodium, ultra-processed and functional foods with current legislation.     Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study

    Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men
