Low-Level Laser Therapy Approach of Bilateral Necrotizing Sialometaplasia of the Hard and Soft Palates

Introduction: Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a rare locally destructive inflammatory benign disease that commonly affects the minor salivary glands. It is frequently associated with the glands located in the posterior portion of the hard and soft palates. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also called photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), has been deemed a substantial method for the regenerative wound process.Case Presentation: A 32-year-old male patient was referred with a chief complaint of two asymptomatic crater-like ulcers measuring approximately 1.5 cm wide on the right side of the hard and soft palates, and another measuring 0.3 cm wide on the left side of the hard palate. The lesion had two weeks of evolution followed by a previous infectious “sore throat” event that kept the patient hospitalized for 4 days. A clinical diagnosis of NS was made. LLLT was applied during 2 sessions per week, favoring the total wound healing within 2 weeks. At 3 months of clinical follow-up, the patient did not present any complication or relapse and was thus released. Conclusion: This is, to our knowledge, the first clinical report of LLLT applied for the management of NS. Large palatal ulcers caused by NS usually have long healing periods. The shortened healing period observed in this case encourages the inclusion of LLLT in any treatment protocol for similar lesions

Brazil is one of the main exporters of agricultural products and is one of the largest consumers of pesticides in the world. Bahia stands out in irrigated agriculture, with growth at the national and international level exports. The aim of this study is to describe and analyze the spatial distribution, and the epidemiological profile of the population with confirmed cases of pesticides intoxication in the state of Bahia-Brazil, from 2007 to 2017. It is an ecological and retrospective study of a series, with secondary data collected at the Department of Informatics of the System Of Health (DATASUS), on notifications and confirmed cases of pesticide poisoning in the state in 2007 to 2017. In Bahia, about 1,632 notifications of exogenous pesticide poisoning in the investigated period, confirming about 1137 cases. The main age group affected by these intoxications were related to 20-39 years of age. The results of this study show the increase in the number of notified and confirmed cases in Bahia during years from 2007 to 2017, thus suggesting the carrying out of research on the subject in this and other Brazilian states, in order to monitor and evaluate the causes of these pesticide poisoning, and improve health promotion

Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

Salvador, Bahia, BrasilRose-oxide is a fragrance found in roses and rose oil. There are no reports about the pharmacological activity of this molecule. The present study was undertaken to evaluate whether rose-oxide (RO) has anti-inflammatory properties and to investigate possible mechanisms involved with its effects. The anti-inflammatory activity of RO was first suggested by the formalin test in mice, an inflammatory pain model, because intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of RO (50 and 100 mg/kg) inhibited only the late phase of this test. To further investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of RO, the complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)- and carrageenan-induced paw inflammation models were used. Pre-treatment with RO (50 and 100 mg/kg) significantly reduced paw edema at 4, 6 and 24 h after the CFA injection. In addition, RO (100 mg/kg) reduced the IL-1β, but not TNF-α, local production induced by CFA. Administration of RO (25–100 mg/kg) decreased the paw edema induced by carrageenan in rats, which was more evident at 3 and 4 h after induction. In addition, neutrophil migration to the hind paw was measured by MPO assay after the carrageenan injection. The MPO activity was significantly inhibited by RO at 25–100 mg/kg, 4 h after stimulus. In another experimental set, administration of RO (25–100 mg/kg) significantly reduced the leukocyte migration in the carrageenan-induced peritonitis model in mice. The results described here are the first report of pharmacological properties of RO and strongly suggest that RO possesses anti-inflammatory activity related to its ability to inhibit the IL-1β production and the leukocyte migration
