Magnesium induces neuronal apoptosis by suppressing excitability
In clinical obstetrics, magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) use is widespread, but effects on brain development are unknown. Many agents that depress neuronal excitability increase developmental neuroapoptosis. In this study, we used dissociated cultures of rodent hippocampus to examine the effects of Mg++ on excitability and survival. Mg++-induced caspase-3-associated cell loss at clinically relevant concentrations. Whole-cell patch-clamp techniques measured Mg++ effects on action potential threshold, action potential peak amplitude, spike number and changes in resting membrane potential. Mg++ depolarized action potential threshold, presumably from surface charge screening effects on voltage-gated sodium channels. Mg++ also decreased the number of action potentials in response to fixed current injection without affecting action potential peak amplitude. Surprisingly, Mg++ also depolarized neuronal resting potential in a concentration-dependent manner with a +5.2 mV shift at 10 mM. Voltage ramps suggested that Mg++ blocked a potassium conductance contributing to the resting potential. In spite of this depolarizing effect of Mg++, the net inhibitory effect of Mg++ nearly completely silenced neuronal network activity measured with multielectrode array recordings. We conclude that although Mg++ has complex effects on cellular excitability, the overall inhibitory influence of Mg++ decreases neuronal survival. Taken together with recent in vivo evidence, our results suggest that caution may be warranted in the use of Mg++ in clinical obstetrics and neonatology
Getting Acquainted with Kant
My question here concerns whether Kant claims that experience has
nonconceptual content, or whether, on his view, experience is
essentially conceptual. However there is a sense in which this debate
concerning the content of intuition is ill-conceived. Part of this has
to do with the terms in which the debate is set, and part to do with
confusion over the connection between Kant’s own views and contemporary
concerns in epistemology and the philosophy of mind. However, I think
much of the substance of the debate concerning Kant’s views on the
content of experience can be salvaged by reframing it in terms of a
debate about the dependence relations, if any, that exist between
different cognitive capacities. Below, in Section 2, I clarify the
notion of ‘content’ I take to be at stake in the interpretive debate.
Section 3 presents reasons for thinking that intuition cannot have
content in the relevant sense. I then argue, in Section 4, that the
debate be reframed in terms of dependence. We should distinguish between
Intellectualism, according to which all objective representation
(understood in a particular way) depends on acts of synthesis by the
intellect, and Sensibilism, according to which at least some forms of
objective representation are independent of any such acts (or the
capacity for such acts). Finally, in Section 5, I further elucidate the
cognitive role of intuition. I articulate a challenge which Kant
understands alethic modal considerations to present for achieving
cognition, and argue that a version of Sensibilism that construes
intuition as a form of acquaintance is better positioned to answer this
challenge than Intellectualism
Premating Reproductive Barriers between Hybridising Cricket Species Differing in Their Degree of Polyandry
Understanding speciation hinges on understanding how reproductive barriers arise between incompletely isolated populations. Despite their crucial role in speciation, prezygotic barriers are relatively poorly understood and hard to predict. We use two closely related cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and G. campestris, to experimentally investigate premating barriers during three sequential mate choice steps. Furthermore, we experimentally show a significant difference in polyandry levels between the two species and subsequently test the hypothesis that females of the more polyandrous species, G. bimaculatus, will be less discriminating against heterospecific males and hence hybridise more readily. During close-range mating behaviour experiments, males showed relatively weak species discrimination but females discriminated very strongly. In line with our predictions, this discrimination is asymmetric, with the more polyandrous G. bimaculatus mating heterospecifically and G. campestris females never mating heterospecifically. Our study shows clear differences in the strength of reproductive isolation during the mate choice process depending on sex and species, which may have important consequences for the evolution of reproductive barriers
Limited genetic variation and structure in softshell clams (Mya arenaria) across their native and introduced range

managers are engaged in extensive stocking of seed clams throughout its range in the
northwest Atlantic. Because a mixture of native and introduced stocks can disrupt locally
adapted genotypes, we investigated genetic structure in M. arenaria populations across
its current distribution to test for patterns of regional differentiation. We sequenced
mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) for a total of 212 individuals from 12 sites in
the northwest Atlantic (NW Atlantic), as well as two introduced sites, the northeast
Pacific (NE Pacific) and the North Sea and Europe (NS Europe). Populations exhibited
extremely low genetic variation, with one haplotype dominating (65-100%) at all sites
sampled. Despite being introduced in the last 150-400 years, both NE Pacific and NS
Europe populations had higher diversity measures than those in the NW Atlantic and both
contained private haplotypes at frequencies of 10% to 27% consistent with their
geographic isolation. While significant genetic structure (FST = 0.159, p<0.001) was
observed between NW Atlantic and NS Europe, there was no evidence for genetic
structure across the pronounced environmental clines of the NW Atlantic. Reduced
genetic diversity in mtDNA combined with previous studies reporting reduced genetic
diversity in nuclear markers strongly suggests a recent population expansion in the NW
Atlantic, a pattern that may result from the retreat of ice sheets during Pleistocene glacial
periods. Lack of genetic diversity and regional genetic differentiation suggests that
present management strategies for the commercially important softshell clam are unlikely
to have a significant impact on the regional distribution of genetic variation, although the

Spatial Analyses of Benthic Habitats to Define Coral Reef Ecosystem Regions and Potential Biogeographic Boundaries along a Latitudinal Gradient
Marine organism diversity typically attenuates latitudinally from tropical to colder climate regimes. Since the distribution of many marine species relates to certain habitats and depth regimes, mapping data provide valuable information in the absence of detailed ecological data that can be used to identify and spatially quantify smaller scale (10 s km) coral reef ecosystem regions and potential physical biogeographic barriers. This study focused on the southeast Florida coast due to a recognized, but understudied, tropical to subtropical biogeographic gradient. GIS spatial analyses were conducted on recent, accurate, shallow-water (0–30 m) benthic habitat maps to identify and quantify specific regions along the coast that were statistically distinct in the number and amount of major benthic habitat types. Habitat type and width were measured for 209 evenly-spaced cross-shelf transects. Evaluation of groupings from a cluster analysis at 75% similarity yielded five distinct regions. The number of benthic habitats and their area, width, distance from shore, distance from each other, and LIDAR depths were calculated in GIS and examined to determine regional statistical differences. The number of benthic habitats decreased with increasing latitude from 9 in the south to 4 in the north and many of the habitat metrics statistically differed between regions. Three potential biogeographic barriers were found at the Boca, Hillsboro, and Biscayne boundaries, where specific shallow-water habitats were absent further north; Middle Reef, Inner Reef, and oceanic seagrass beds respectively. The Bahamas Fault Zone boundary was also noted where changes in coastal morphologies occurred that could relate to subtle ecological changes. The analyses defined regions on a smaller scale more appropriate to regional management decisions, hence strengthening marine conservation planning with an objective, scientific foundation for decision making. They provide a framework for similar regional analyses elsewhere
Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger
On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta
Defining family business: a closer look at definitional heterogeneity
Researchers have used a myriad of different definitions in seeking to explain the heterogeneity of family firms and their unique behavior; however, no widely-accepted definition exists today. Definitional clarity in any field is essential to provide (a) the basis for the analysis of performance both spatially and temporally and (b) the foundation upon which theories, frameworks and models are developed. We provide a comprehensive analysis of prior research and identify and classify 82 definitions of family business. We then review and evaluate five key theoretical perspectives in family business to identify how these have shaped and informed the definitions employed in the field and duly explain family firm heterogeneity. Finally, we provide a conceptual diagram to inform the choice of definition in different research settings
