Establishment of Hematological Reference intervals for healthy Children in Elobied City, Sudan
Hemogram Reference intervals are established since a healthy population is critical to accurately interpret laboratory tests, which include Hemoglobin estimation, Red blood cells count and indices, White blood cells count and differential in addition to Platelets count. This study aims to establish the reference interval of the complete hemogram amongst healthy Sudanese children in Elobied city, Sudan. A descriptive cross-sectional study included 354 healthy children, aged between 3 to 17 years, who were categorized into three groups according to age. A questionnaire was fulfilled, EDTA anti-coagulated venous blood sample was collected from each child then the complete hemogram was performed automated hematological analyzer (Sysmex Xp 300), Finally, Data was analyzed by a software program (SPSS version 21). The hematological reference intervals for healthy children [Hb g/dl, HCT%, RBCs count x106μL, MCV/fL ,MCH /pg., MCHC g/dl ,WBCs count x10³/μL, Neutrophil count%, Eosinophil count %, Basophile count %, lymphocyte count ,Monocytes count%, RDW CV and PLTs count×10³/μL] are [(12.4±1.2),(37±4),(5.0 ±0.4), (82±5.0), (26±3.0), (32±3.0) ,(7.0±2.0) (47±10), (1±0.1) ,(0±0),(45± 10),(7 ± 4), (13±1.8) &(227±91)] respectively. The hematological RI for healthy children in Elobied was established in this study to be representative of this population, there was a significant gender-based difference in all the evaluated hematological parameters, they were found to be higher in males than in females except for basophil (%). Finally, the results of this study would shed a light on the importance of establishing RI for the children population in Elobied
EPIDEMIC OF RIFT VALLEY FEVER IN SUDAN, GEZIRA, 2007; GEZIRA EXPERIENCE
In the last 3 months of 2007, an acute episode of an ill-defined severe febrile illness presented to Medani hospital isolation words, with severe hemorrhagic manifestations. This initially did not harbor any attention as other possibilities were thought of like severe malaria , septicaemia but by the end of the same week the number of patients increased dramatically and the suspicion was put and the whole case was addressed officially in an epidemical paradigm.
This study was conducted in Wad Medani Teaching Hospital. From the beginning of 41st week of the year 2007, the Gezira state in Sudan was tremendously affected by an epidemic of Rift valley fever as declared by the WHO authorities (11).all the districts of the estate were involved with a total number of patients was around 392.
During the period of epidemic of RVF, (week 41.2007 - up to the 1st week of January 2008) total number of patients admitted were about 392 and total number of patients died were 158 patients .The main presenting symptoms were fever, epistaxsis, haematemesis and vaginal bleeding, and the main complication was acute renal failure and death
Knowledge and Practice Regarding Coronavirus Disease Prevention (COVID-19) Among Internally Displaced Persons in Camps in Central Darfur Region, Sudan
Background: The lacking healthcare system services in conflict areas and the emergence of infection with a pandemic of coronavirus disease may exacerbate the humanitarian crisis among the camp residents in the central Dafur region of Sudan. Adequate knowledge and practices are vital to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the knowledge and practice regarding COVID-19 among internally displaced persons in Sudan.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data were collected through an online survey using a self-administered questionnaire. Convenience sampling method was used for the internally displaced persons in two camps of Zalingei town, central Darfur region, Sudan.
Results: In total, 143 participants responded; 75 (52.4%) of them were female, while 68 (47.6%) were male; 49 (34.3%) were between the age of 50 and 60 years; 78 (54.5%) were formally uneducated; 126 (88.1%) did not have a chronic disease; and 56 (39.2%) knew about COVID-19 from their relatives and friends. The overall mean of participants’ knowledge toward COVID-19 was 3.68 (SD ± 0.60(, denoting good with a rate of 73.6% and that of the practice was 2.65 (SD ±1.08), denoting moderate with a rate of 53%. A positive correlation was seen between knowledge and practice (r = 0.700, p < 0.000). Statistically significant differences were observed between the mean score of knowledge and practice with age, education, and information sources (p < 0.0001). While graduates showed a higher knowledge (116.29, p = 0.000), secondary respondents showed a higher practice (115.04, p = 0.000) than others.
Conclusion: This study suggests educational intervention and awareness programs for uneducated and older people
Second primary malignancies of eye and ocular adnexa after a first primary elsewhere in the body
Purpose!#!The eye and its adnexal structures can give rise to first or consecutive primary malignancies or to encounter metastasis. Our aim was to define the characteristics of the second primary neoplasms affecting the eye and its adnexa and find the risk modifying factors for them after malignancies elsewhere in the body.!##!Methods!#!We have queried the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results 'SEER'-9 program of the National Cancer Institute for the malignancies of the eye and its adnexa that occurred between 1973 and 2015. The malignancies were ordered chronologically according to their incidence: first or second primary malignancies. The tumors were classified according to ICD-O-3 classification. Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and survival probabilities were calculated for subgroups.!##!Results!#!Among 3,578,950 cancer patients, 1203 experienced a second malignancies of the eye and its adnexa. The first malignancy was diagnosed between 50 and 69 years of age in 58.94% of them. The eyelid showed 280 events, while 50 in lacrimal gland, 181 in the orbit, 21 in the overlapping lesions, 15 in optic nerve, 148 in the conjunctiva, 9 in the cornea, 6 in the Retina, 379 in the choroid, and 93 in the ciliary body. The SIR of a second malignancy after a prior non-Hodgkin lymphoma was 2.42, and in case of previous skin carcinomas it was 3.02, melanoma of skin, and 2.13 and 1.58 in oral cavity/pharynx malignancies. The second ocular and adnexal neoplasms increased steadily over the 5-year periods on contrary to first primary neoplasms. The survival of patients affected with first ocular and adnexal neoplasms was significantly higher than those with second ocular and adnexal neoplasms. On the other side, second primary ocular and adnexal tumors showed a better survival than second primary malignancies elsewhere.!##!Conclusions!#!The epidemiological differences between first and second ocular and adnexal primaries suggest different underlying mechanisms. Careful ocular examination should be integrated in the long-term follow-up plan of cancer patients. Special attention should be given to patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and melanoma as first primary
THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Study of Various Factors Affecting Secondary Loss Vortices Downstream a Straight Turbine Cascade
ABSTRACT An experimental investigation is carried out to study the effect of inlet boundary layer thickness, aspect ratio and exit Mach number on the energy loss and on the behaviour of secondary vortices downstream of a straight turbine cascade of blades having 82°t urning angle . Some correlations were deduced which predict, the cascade efficiency and the gross secondary loss coefficient as function of the downstream distance
Intestinal permeation enhancers for oral peptide delivery
Intestinal permeation enhancers (PEs) are one of the most widely tested strategies to improve oral delivery of therapeutic peptides. This article assesses the intestinal permeation enhancement action of over 250 PEs that have been tested in intestinal delivery models. In depth analysis of pre-clinical data is presented for PEs as components of proprietary delivery systems that have progressed to clinical trials. Given the importance of co-presentation of sufficiently high concentrations of PE and peptide at the small intestinal epithelium, there is an emphasis on studies where PEs have been formulated with poorly permeable molecules in solid dosage forms and lipoidal dispersions.European Commission - Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)Science Foundation IrelandRCSI School of Pharmac
