What does it mean to be a “materially attuned” practitioner?

This paper reports on research in progress that explores the potential role the materiality of things plays as a tool for the critical understanding of the human relationship with man-‐made objects. The paper argues that many designers habitually engage with production and consumption of meanings more through the materiality of things than words and symbols. It proposes a hypothesis that materiality is a key to understanding the context, knowledge and information the man-made objects may “embody”. Through the case study of an exhibition, the paper examines the ways in which this embodiment may be facilitated. Referring to Heidegger’s notion of "thingness", it further explores the origin of the mediating, and the “engaging capacity” of objects. The paper draws on the more established analysis of the origin and the experience of the work of art, in its examination of the role that materiality plays in the production and consumption of meaning and in facilitating the experience through objects. While exploring the potential advantage of an anthropological approach to design, the paper suggests that an attunement to materiality and an active reflection on their observations enable the designers to have better insights into the workings of the human-object relationship

A neural network for controlling the configuration of frame structure with elastic members

    Get PDF
A neural network for controlling the configuration of frame structure with elastic members is proposed. In the present network, the structure is modeled not by using the relative angles of the members but by using the distances between the joint locations alone. The relationship between the environment and the joints is also defined by their mutual distances. The analog neural network attains the reaching motion of the manipulator as a minimization problem of the energy constructed by the distances between the joints, the target, and the obstacles. The network can generate not only the final but also the transient configurations and the trajectory. This framework with flexibility and parallelism is very suitable for controlling the Space Telerobotic systems with many degrees of freedom

Convergence to Scattering States in the Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

In this paper, we consider global solutions of the following nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation iut+Δu+λ∣u∣αu=0,iu_t+\Delta u+\lambda|u|^\alpha u = 0, in RN,\R^N, with λ∈R,\lambda\in\R, α∈(0,4N−2)\alpha\in(0,\frac{4}{N-2}) (α∈(0,∞)(\alpha\in(0,\infty) if N=1)N=1) and \linebreak u(0)∈X≡H1(RN)∩L2(∣x∣2;dx).u(0)\in X\equiv H^1(\R^N)\cap L^2(|x|^2;dx). We show that, under suitable conditions, if the solution uu satisfies e−itΔu(t)−u±→0e^{-it\Delta}u(t)-u_ \pm\to0 in XX as t→±∞t\to\pm\infty then u(t)−eitΔu±→0u(t)-e^{it\Delta}u_\pm\to0 in XX as t→±∞.t\to\pm\infty. We also study the converse. Finally, we estimate âˆŁâ€…âˆ„u(t)∄X−∄eitΔu±∄X ∣|\:\|u(t)\|_X-\|e^{it\Delta}u_\pm\|_X\:| under some less restrictive assumptions

Is the"Japan Problem"real? How problems in Japan's financial sector could affect developing regions

    Get PDF
The burst of the Japanese financial bubble in the early 1990s has increased the bad debts of Japan's financial institutions. Japan accounts for about 20 percent of foreign aid to developing countries and for 10 percent of their exports, so Japan's economic health is important. The authors analyze the situation, assess the bad debt stock, and simulate the likely effects of crises in Japan's financial sector. They conclude that: a) a crisis that would shake up the world financial market is unlikely but Japanese authorities may have to restructure severely affected institutions, which could increase fiscal spending or debt stock; b) even with a limited bank run, the household sector's lack of confidence would send the country into a recessionary spiral, requiring the monetary authority to intervene with short term liquidity supplies; c) a financial crisis would depress world trade, raise interest rates, and turn the terms of trade against developing regions that export primary commodities; d) many Asian exporters of low-cost manufactures to Japan may be relatively unaffected; e) the simulation does not detect contagious effects in the US financial market; f) damage could be contained once the monetary authority steps in to supply short-tern liquidity; g) coping with such problems would leave the Japanese economy in a less favorable position for confronting their aging population problem and fiscal pressures may reduce Japanese aid to low income countries.International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Banks&Banking Reform,Financial Intermediation,Economic Theory&Research,Economic Theory&Research,Financial Intermediation,Environmental Economics&Policies,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Banks&Banking Reform
