The BPAG1 locus: alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms with distinct cytoskeletal linker domains, including predominant isoforms in neurons and muscles
Bullous pemphigoid antigen 1 (BPAG1) is a member of the plakin family with cytoskeletal linker properties. Mutations in BPAG1 cause sensory neuron degeneration and skin fragility in mice. We have analyzed the BPAG1 locus in detail and found that it encodes different interaction domains that are combined in tissue-specific manners. These domains include an actin-binding domain (ABD), a plakin domain, a coiled coil (CC) rod domain, two different potential intermediate filament–binding domains (IFBDs), a spectrin repeat (SR)-containing rod domain, and a microtubule-binding domain (MTBD). There are at least three major forms of BPAG1: BPAG1-e (302 kD), BPAG1-a (615 kD), and BPAG1-b (834 kD). BPAG1-e has been described previously and consists of the plakin domain, the CC rod domain, and the first IFBD. It is the primary epidermal BPAG1 isoform, and its absence that is the likely cause of skin fragility in mutant mice. BPAG1-a is the major isoform in the nervous system and a homologue of the microtubule actin cross-linking factor, MACF. BPAG1-a is composed of the ABD, the plakin domain, the SR-containing rod domain, and the MTBD. The absence of BPAG1-a is the likely cause of sensory neurodegeneration in mutant mice. BPAG1-b is highly expressed in muscles, and has extra exons encoding a second IFBD between the plakin and SR-containing rod domains of BPAG1-a
Ferromagnetic Polarons in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.33Ca0.67MnO3
Unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations on La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.33Ca0.67MnO3
in the full magnetic unit cell show that the magnetic ground states of these
compounds consist of 'ferromagnetic molecules' or polarons ordered in
herring-bone patterns. Each polaron consists of either three or five Mn ions
separated by O- ions with a magnetic moment opposed to those of the Mn ions.
Ferromagnetic coupling within the polarons is strong while coupling between
them is relatively weak. Magnetic moments on the Mn ions range between 3.8 and
3.9 Bohr magnetons in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and moments on the O- ions are -0.7 Bohr
magnetons. Each polaron has a net magnetic moment of 7.0 Bohr magnetons, in
good agreement with recently reported magnetisation measurements from electron
microscopy. The polaronic nature of the electronic structure reported here is
obviously related to the Zener polaron model recently proposed for
Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 on the basis of neutron scattering data.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure
Partonic effects on the elliptic flow at relativistic heavy ion collisions
The elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at RHIC is studied in a multiphase
transport model. By converting the strings in the high energy density regions
into partons, we find that the final elliptic flow is sensitive to the parton
scattering cross section. To reproduce the large elliptic flow observed in
Au+Au collisions at GeV requires a parton scattering cross
section of about 6 mb. We also study the dependence of the elliptic flow on the
particle multiplicity, transverse momentum, and particle mass.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, revtex, text added to detail the procedure for

Liposomal prednisolone promotes macrophage lipotoxicity in experimental atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a lipid-driven inflammatory disease, for which nanomedicinal interventions are under evaluation. Previously, we showed that liposomal nanoparticles loaded with prednisolone (LN-PLP) accumulated in plaque macrophages, however, induced proatherogenic effects in patients. Here, we confirmed in low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (LDLr−/−) mice that LN-PLP accumulates in plaque macrophages. Next, we found that LN-PLP infusions at 10 mg/kg for 2 weeks enhanced monocyte recruitment to plaques. In follow up, after 6 weeks of LN-PLP exposure we observed (i) increased macrophage content, (ii) more advanced plaque stages, and (iii) larger necrotic core sizes. Finally, in vitro studies showed that macrophages become lipotoxic after LN-PLP exposure, exemplified by enhanced lipid loading, ER stress and apoptosis. These findings indicate that liposomal prednisolone may paradoxically accelerate atherosclerosis by promoting macrophage lipotoxicity. Hence, future (nanomedicinal) drug development studies are challenged by the multifactorial nature of atherosclerotic inflammation
Rapidity distribution as a probe for elliptical flow at intermediate energies
Interplay between the spectator and participant matter in heavy-ion
collisions is investigated within isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics
(IQMD) model in term of rapidity distribution of light charged particles. The
effect of different types and size rapidity distributions is studied in
elliptical flow. The elliptical flow patterns show important role of the nearby
spectator matter on the participant zone. This role is further explained on the
basis of passing time of the spectator and expansion time of the participant
zone. The transition from the in-plane to out-of-plane is observed only when
the mid-rapidity region is included in the rapidity bin, otherwise no
transition occurs. The transition energy is found to be highly sensitive
towards the size of the rapidity bin, while weakly on the type of the rapidity
distribution. The theoretical results are also compared with the experimental
findings and are found in good agreement.Comment: 8 figure
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table,
