Utilisation du langage signal pour l'etude d'algorithmes de traitement du Signal electrocardiographique
Projet SOSSOPour etudier la maturation du Systeme Nerveux Autonome (SNA) chez les nouveaux nes, on analyse la Variabilite du Rythme Cardiaque (VRC), en relation avec d'autres informations biologiques telles que les changements de stades de sommeil. La VRC est calculee par la Transformee de Fourier a Court Terme dans trois bandes de frequence : la haute frequence, refletant le controle para sympathique seul et liee au cycle respiratoire ; les moyenne et basse frequences, refletant a la fois le controle sympathique et para sympathique. C'est en cherchant un moyen rapide d'implementation et de calibration des methodes en cours d'evaluation, que nous avons utilise Signal, un langage flots de donnees, parallele et synchrone, concu pour les systemes de programmation en temps reel. Ce langage permet le traitement de volumineux signaux polygraphiques a des rythmes differents. Signal offre un petit ensemble d'operateur temporel suffisant pour exprimer toute les relations possibles entre les rythmes (horloges) des signaux : sous echantillonnage, melange, retard. Le compilateur verifie la coherence globale de ce systeme relationel et construit l'automate correspondant pour la machine cible. Grace a l'aspect flot de donnees, une application peut etre consideree comme un resau de processus interconnectes, modulaires eventuellement paralleles et hierarchiques. Grace a l'aspect synchrone Signal offre des outils puissants de mise au point des programmes et de calibration des methodes : l'utilisateur peut dynamiquement ralentir, stoper une execution a l'occurence de n'importe quel signal, connecter des sondes aux signaux et faire varier les valeurs des parametres de maniere dynamique en cours d'execution. Le logiciel d'analyse de la VRC qui en resulte, LARY-C, est adapte aux objectifs de recherche (developpement de methodes avec simulation en temps reel) comme aux objectifs cliniques (evaluation et exploration de methodes)
The Look-back Time Evolution of Far-Ultraviolet Flux from the Brightest Cluster Elliptical Galaxies at z < 0.2
We present the GALEX UV photometry of the elliptical galaxies in Abell
clusters at moderate redshifts (z < 0.2) for the study of the look-back time
evolution of the UV upturn phenomenon. The brightest elliptical galaxies (M_r <
-22) in 12 remote clusters are compared with the nearby giant elliptical
galaxies of comparable optical luminosity in the Fornax and Virgo clusters. The
sample galaxies presented here appear to be quiescent without signs of massive
star formation or strong nuclear activity, and show smooth, extended profiles
in their UV images indicating that the far-UV (FUV) light is mostly produced by
hot stars in the underlying old stellar population. Compared to their
counterparts in nearby clusters, the FUV flux of cluster giant elliptical
galaxies at moderate redshifts fades rapidly with ~ 2 Gyrs of look-back time,
and the observed pace in FUV - V color evolution agrees reasonably well with
the prediction from the population synthesis models where the dominant FUV
source is hot horizontal-branch stars and their progeny. A similar amount of
color spread (~ 1 mag) in FUV - V exists among the brightest cluster elliptical
galaxies at z ~ 0.1, as observed among the nearby giant elliptical galaxies of

Physical Review Letters, 114(9), 6. doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.114.098102We present a proof-of-concept three-dimensional reconstruction of the giant mimivirus particle from experimentally measured diffraction patterns from an x-ray free-electron laser. Three-dimensional imaging requires the assembly of many two-dimensional patterns into an internally consistent Fourier volume. Since each particle is randomly oriented when exposed to the x-ray pulse, relative orientations have to be retrieved from the diffraction data alone. The Mice at play in the CALIFA survey: A case study of a gas-rich major merger between first passage and coalescence
We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the
Mice, a major merger between two massive (>10^11Msol) gas-rich spirals NGC4676A
and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence. The spectra
provide stellar and gas kinematics, ionised gas properties and stellar
population diagnostics, over the full optical extent of both galaxies. The Mice
provide a perfect case study highlighting the importance of IFS data for
improving our understanding of local galaxies. The impact of first passage on
the kinematics of the stars and gas has been significant, with strong bars
likely induced in both galaxies. The barred spiral NGC4676B exhibits a strong
twist in both its stellar and ionised gas disk. On the other hand, the impact
of the merger on the stellar populations has been minimal thus far: star
formation induced by the recent close passage has not contributed significantly
to the global star formation rate or stellar mass of the galaxies. Both
galaxies show bicones of high ionisation gas extending along their minor axes.
In NGC4676A the high gas velocity dispersion and Seyfert-like line ratios at
large scaleheight indicate a powerful outflow. Fast shocks extend to ~6.6kpc
above the disk plane. The measured ram pressure and mass outflow rate
(~8-20Msol/yr) are similar to superwinds from local ULIRGs, although NGC4676A
has only a moderate infrared luminosity of 3x10^10Lsol. Energy beyond that
provided by the mechanical energy of the starburst appears to be required to
drive the outflow. We compare the observations to mock kinematic and stellar
population maps from a merger simulation. The models show little enhancement in
star formation during and following first passage, in agreement with the
observations. We highlight areas where IFS data could help further constrain

Porphyromonas gingivalis Participates in Pathogenesis of Human Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm by Neutrophil Activation. Proof of Concept in Rats
International audienceBACKGROUND: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs) represent a particular form of atherothrombosis where neutrophil proteolytic activity plays a major role. We postulated that neutrophil recruitment and activation participating in AAA growth may originate in part from repeated episodes of periodontal bacteremia. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Our results show that neutrophil activation in human AAA was associated with Neutrophil Extracellular Trap (NET) formation in the IntraLuminal Thrombus, leading to the release of cell-free DNA. Human AAA samples were shown to contain bacterial DNA with high frequency (11/16), and in particular that of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), the most prevalent pathogen involved in chronic periodontitis, a common form of periodontal disease. Both DNA reflecting the presence of NETs and antibodies to Pg were found to be increased in plasma of patients with AAA. Using a rat model of AAA, we demonstrated that repeated injection of Pg fostered aneurysm development, associated with pathological characteristics similar to those observed in humans, such as the persistence of a neutrophil-rich luminal thrombus, not observed in saline-injected rats in which a healing process was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, the control of periodontal disease may represent a therapeutic target to limit human AAA progression
Systems medicine and integrated care to combat chronic noncommunicable diseases
We propose an innovative, integrated, cost-effective health system to combat major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular, chronic respiratory, metabolic, rheumatologic and neurologic disorders and cancers, which together are the predominant health problem of the 21st century. This proposed holistic strategy involves comprehensive patient-centered integrated care and multi-scale, multi-modal and multi-level systems approaches to tackle NCDs as a common group of diseases. Rather than studying each disease individually, it will take into account their intertwined gene-environment, socio-economic interactions and co-morbidities that lead to individual-specific complex phenotypes. It will implement a road map for predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (P4) medicine based on a robust and extensive knowledge management infrastructure that contains individual patient information. It will be supported by strategic partnerships involving all stakeholders, including general practitioners associated with patient-centered care. This systems medicine strategy, which will take a holistic approach to disease, is designed to allow the results to be used globally, taking into account the needs and specificities of local economies and health systems
