    IntroducciĂłn. El propĂłsito es evaluar si la utilizaciĂłn de los drenajes autotransfusores en la artroplastia total de rodilla primaria minimiza la caĂ­da de la hemoglobina en el postoperatorio, asĂ­ como la necesidad de transfusiones sanguĂ­neas alogĂ©nicas. Material y mĂ©todos. Estudio retrospectivo, analĂ­tico observacional que incluyĂł 100 pacientes intervenidos de artroplastia de rodilla entre enero 2014 y enero 2015 en el Hospital Dr. Peset. Compara tanto los parĂĄmetros analĂ­ticos de sangrado (hemoglobina y hematocrito) como la necesidad de transfusiĂłn sanguĂ­nea entre pacientes reinfundidos y no reinfundidos. Resultados. Se reinfundieron 50 pacientes con un volumen medio de 505 ml. La necesidad de transfusiĂłn sanguĂ­nea alogĂ©nica en los reinfundidos fue de 4% mientras que en los no reinfundidos fue de 24%. La caĂ­da media de hemoglobina postquirĂșrgica fue 1,12 g/ dl menor en el grupo reinfundido. Conclusiones. El redĂłn autotransfusor es una tĂ©cnica segura que mejora el rendimiento analĂ­tico postransfusional y, por consiguiente, reduce el nĂșmero de transfusiones alogĂ©nicas.Introduction. The purpose is to evaluate the use of autotransfusors drains in total knee arthroplasty primary minimizes the drop in hemoglobin in the postoperative period, and the need for allogeneic blood transfusions. Material and methods. A retrospective, analitic and observational study, have been included 100 patients undergoing knee arthroplasty between January 2014 and January 2015 at the Dr. Peset Hospital. Compare the analytical parameters of bleeding (hemoglobin and hematocrit) and the need for blood transfusion among patients and not reinfused reinfused. Results. Fifty patients with Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) were reinfused with a mean volume of 505 ml. The need for allogenic blood transfusions was 4%, while in patients not reinfused was 24%. The average drop in postoperative hemoglobin was 1.12 g / dl lower in the group reinfused. Conclusions. The autotransfusion drain is a safe technique which improves post-transfusional values and therefore reduces the number of allogenic blood transfusions

    Acoustic communication within ant societies and its mimicry by mutualistic and socially parasitic myrmecophiles

    This review focuses on the main acoustic adaptations that have evolved to enhance social communication in ants. We also describe how other invertebrates mimic these acoustic signals in order to coexist with ants in the case of mutualistic myrmecophiles, or, in the case of social parasites, corrupt them in order to infiltrate ant societies and exploit their resources. New data suggest that the strength of each ant myrmecophile interaction leads to distinctive sound profiles and may be a better predictor of the similarity of sound between different myrmecophilous species than their phylogenetic distance. Finally, we discuss the evolutionary significance of vibrations produced by specialized myrmecophiles in the context of ant multimodal communication involving the use of chemical and acoustic signals in combination and identify future challenges for research including how new technology might allow a better understanding of the study systems

    The interaction of La3+ complexes of DOTA/DTPA-glycoconjugates with the RCA120 lectin : a saturation transfer difference (STD) NMR spectroscopic study

    The study of ligand-receptor interactions using high resolution NMR techniques, namely the Saturation Transfer Difference (STD), is presented for the recognition process between La(III) complexes of DOTA mono(amide) and DTPA bis(amide) glycoconjugates and the galactose specific lectin Ricinus Communis agglutinin (RCA120). This new class of Gd(III)-based potential targeted MRI contrast agents (CAs), bearing one or two terminal sugar (galactosyl or lactosyl) moieties, has been designed for in vivo binding to ASGPR (the asialoglycoprotein receptor), which is specifically expressed at the surface of liver hepatocytes, with the aim of leading to a new possible diagnosis of liver pathologies. The in vitro affinity constants of the divalent La(III)- glycoconjugate complexes to RCA120, used as a simple, water soluble receptor model, were higher than those of the monovalent analogues. The combination of the experimental data obtained from the STD NMR experiments with molecular modelling protocols (Autodock 4.1) allowed us to predict the binding mode of mono and divalent forms of these CAs to the galactose 1 binding sites of RCA120. The atomic details of the molecular interactions allowed corroborating and supporting the interaction of both the sugar moieties and the linkers with the surface of the protein and thus, their contribution to the observed interaction stabilities.Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e a Tecnologia (FCT

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
