    Effect of calving to timed artificial insemination interval on fertility of beef cows.

    The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of calving to timed artificial insemination (C-TAI) interval on fertility of Bos taurus and Bos indicus cows and to determine the best C-TAI interval to include postpartum cows in TAI programs in each genotype (B. taurus and B. indicus). In experiment 1, a retrospective study was per-formed, with data from 2,709 TAI in Bos taurus and Bos indicus cows with different C- TAI intervals. There was a positive linear effect of C-TAI interval on the pregnancy probability (p 52 days). Cows with C-TAI longer than 52 days (C-TAI > 52) had greater pregnancy rate (56%) than cows with short C-TAI (46%; p .05) the ovulation rate nor the propor-tion of endometrial polymorphonuclear leucocytes. We conclude that C-TAI interval affects pregnancy rate in both Bos taurus and Bos indicus. We recommend a C-TAI in-terval longer than 52 days to increase fertility of beef cows included in TAI programs

    Synthesis and in vitro and in vivo characterization of highly ÎČ1-Selective ÎČ-Adrenoceptor partial agonists

    ÎČ-Adrenoceptor antagonists boast a 50-year use for symptomatic control in numerous cardiovascular diseases. One might expect highly selective antagonists are available for the human ÎČ-adrenoceptor subtype involved in these diseases, yet few truly ÎČ1-selective molecules exist. To address this clinical need, we re-evaluated LK 204-545 (1),1 a selective ÎČ1-adrenoceptor antagonist, and discovered it possessed significant partial agonism. Removal of 1’s aromatic nitrile afforded 19, a ligand with similar ÎČ1-adrenoceptor selectivity and partial agonism (log KD of −7.75 and −5.15 as an antagonist of functional ÎČ1- and ÎČ2-mediated responses, respectively, and 34% of the maximal response of isoprenaline (ÎČ1)). In vitro ÎČ-adrenoceptor selectivity and partial agonism of 19 were mirrored in vivo. We designed analogues of 19 to improve affinity, selectivity, and partial agonism. Although partial agonism could not be fully attenuated, SAR suggests that an extended alkoxyalkoxy side chain, alongside substituents at the meta- or para-positions of the phenylurea, increases ligand affinity and ÎČ1- selectivity

    The Alpha Linolenic Acid Content of Flaxseed is Associated with an Induction of Adipose Leptin Expression

    Dietary flaxseed has cardioprotective effects that may be achieved through its rich content of the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha linolenic acid (ALA). Because ALA can be stored in adipose tissue, it is possible that some of its beneficial actions may be due to effects it has on the adipose tissue. We investigated the effects of dietary flaxseed both with and without an atherogenic cholesterol-enriched diet to determine the effects of dietary flaxseed on the expression of the adipose cytokines leptin and adiponectin. Rabbits were fed one of four diets: a regular (RG) diet, or a regular diet with added 0.5% cholesterol (CH), or 10% ground flaxseed (FX), or both (CF) for 8 weeks. Levels of leptin and adiponectin expression were assessed by RT-PCR in visceral adipose tissue. Consumption of flaxseed significantly increased plasma and adipose levels of ALA. Leptin protein and mRNA expression were lower in CH animals and were elevated in CF animals. Changes in leptin expression were strongly and positively correlated with adipose ALA levels and inversely correlated with levels of en face atherosclerosis. Adiponectin expression was not significantly affected by any of the dietary interventions. Our data demonstrate that the type of fat in the diet as well as its caloric content can specifically influence leptin expression. The findings support the hypothesis that the beneficial cardiovascular effects associated with flaxseed consumption may be related to a change in leptin expression

    Recent studies on plant immunity have suggested that a pathogen should suppress induced plant defense in order to infect a plant species, which otherwise would have been a nonhost to the pathogen. For this purpose, pathogens exploit effector molecules to interfere with different layers of plant defense responses. In this review, we summarize the latest findings on plant factors that are activated by pathogen effectors to suppress plant immunity. By looking from a different point of view into host and nonhost resistance, we propose a novel breeding strategy: disabling plant disease susceptibility genes (S-genes) to achieve durable and broad-spectrum resistance

    We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics

    FCC-hh: The Hadron Collider: Future Circular Collider Conceptual Design Report Volume 3

    In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100 km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the third volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the hadron collider FCC-hh. It summarizes the FCC-hh physics discovery opportunities, presents the FCC-hh accelerator design, performance reach, and staged operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the FCC-hh design aims at significantly extending the energy frontier to 100 TeV. Its unprecedented centre of-mass collision energy will make the FCC-hh a unique instrument to explore physics beyond the Standard Model, offering great direct sensitivity to new physics and discoveries
