    Effects of Technology on Literacy Skills and Motivation to Read and Write

    This project is an initial investigation into how technology affects one student’s literacy learning and motivation in reading and writing. Over a period of five weeks, I incorporated technology into instruction and then observed how it affected the student’s motivation and skills while reading and writing. I conducted observations, interviews and retellings to gather all data. The primary goal of this study was to answer the research questions 1) What effects do digital literacies have on a struggling reader and writer as well as his/her motivation to read and write? 2) What additional factors influence this student’s reading and writing? Through the completion of my analysis I can conclude that technology may be effective for struggling readers and writers who are considered to be digital natives. I can also conclude when teaching reading and writing, the use of both traditional and twenty-first century strategies may be an effective strategy to improve literacy skills. Through my research I was also able to conclude positive parental involvement may have a direct correlation on a student’s improvement with reading and writing skills. This research suggests when a student is unfamiliar with technology being used there is no significant improvement with skills

    Venous thromboembolism in primary nephrotic syndrome - is the risk high enough to justify prophylactic anticoagulation?

    Background: The reported incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) varies widely, as does the approach to prophylactic anticoagulation. We aimed to assess the incidence of VTE in patients with primary NS in order to inform a sample size calculation to determine if a future clinical trial will ever be feasible. Methods: All adults undergoing native renal biopsy for NS between 2008 and 2013 yielding a diagnosis of primary glomerulonephritis were identified. Baseline serum albumin, urine protein:creatinine ratio, estimated glomerular filtration rate, date of biopsy and histological diagnosis were recorded. Episodes of objectively verified VTE were identified using the electronic patient record. Sample size calculations were performed based on 2 independent samples with a dichotomous outcome and to achieve a power of 80% and p < 0.05. Results: Two hundred six patients were included of which 60% were male and mean age at biopsy was 55 years (SD 19). Median follow-up was 2.9 years (interquartile range (IQR) 1.6-4.7). Fourteen (6.8%) patients suffered VTE. Median time to diagnosis of VTE from renal biopsy was 36 days (IQR -22 to 178), with 6 VTEs occurring prior to biopsy and 1 during remission. In a total of 270 patient years of NS, there were 7 VTE that could potentially have been avoided if anticoagulation was given for the duration of NS, that is, 2.6% risk per year of NS; this risk was highest for patients with minimal change nephropathy at 13.3% per year of NS, compared to 0.65% per year of NS for those with idiopathic membranous nephropathy. Assuming a 75% reduction in the incidence of VTE with prophylactic anticoagulation, 972 participants would be required for a future clinical trial to have 80% power. Conclusions: Patients with primary NS are at an increased risk of VTE. The timing of VTE means that only half of episodes would be targeted by prophylactic anticoagulation. Given the low frequency of events, a well-powered clinical trial would be challenging to achieve

    Determination of |Vcb| using the semileptonic decay \bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\bar{\nu}

    We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb^{-1} data sample recorded at the \Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the \bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\bar{\nu} decay to the kinematic limit at which the D^{*+} is at rest with respect to the \bar{B}^0, we extract the product of |Vcb| with the normalization of the decay form factor F(1), |Vcb |F(1)= (3.54+/-0.19+/-0.18)x10^{-2}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A value of |Vcb| = (3.88+/-0.21+/-0.20+/-0.19)x10^{-2} is obtained using a theoretical calculation of F(1), where the third error is due to the theoretical uncertainty in the value of F(1). The branching fraction B(\bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\bar{\nu}) is measured to be (4.59+/-0.23+/-0.40)x10^{-2}.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, elsart.cls, submitted to PL

    Coherent states for exactly solvable potentials

    A general algebraic procedure for constructing coherent states of a wide class of exactly solvable potentials e.g., Morse and P{\"o}schl-Teller, is given. The method, {\it a priori}, is potential independent and connects with earlier developed ones, including the oscillator based approaches for coherent states and their generalizations. This approach can be straightforwardly extended to construct more general coherent states for the quantum mechanical potential problems, like the nonlinear coherent states for the oscillators.     A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper reports a measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector with an integrated luminosity of 0.30 pb^-1 for jets with transverse momentum between 25 and 70 GeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 2.5. D*+/- mesons found in jets are fully reconstructed in the decay chain: D*+ -> D0pi+, D0 -> K-pi+, and its charge conjugate. The production rate is found to be N(D*+/-)/N(jet) = 0.025 +/- 0.001(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) for D*+/- mesons that carry a fraction z of the jet momentum in the range 0.3 < z < 1. Monte Carlo predictions fail to describe the data at small values of z, and this is most marked at low jet transverse momentum.Comment: 10 pages plus author list (22 pages total), 5 figures, 1 table, matches published version in Physical Review

    Measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of B mesons and |Vcb|

    We present a measurement of the electron spectrum from inclusive semileptonic {\it B} decay, using 5.1 fb1^{-1} of Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) data collected with the Belle detector. A high-momentum lepton tag was used to separate the semileptonic {\it B} decay electrons from secondary decay electrons. We obtained the branching fraction, B(BXe+ν)=(10.90±0.12±0.49){\cal B}(B\to X e^+ \nu) = (10.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.49)%, with minimal model dependence. From this measurement, we derive a value for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vcb=0.0408±0.0010(exp)±0.0025(th)|V_{cb}| = 0.0408 \pm 0.0010 {\rm (exp)} \pm 0.0025{\rm (th)}.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

    Search for supersymmetry in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one isolated lepton in sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions using 1 fb-1 of ATLAS data

    We present an update of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon, using 1.04 fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in the first half of 2011. The analysis is carried out in four distinct signal regions with either three or four jets and variations on the (missing) transverse momentum cuts, resulting in optimized limits for various supersymmetry models. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Limits are set on the visible cross-section of new physics within the kinematic requirements of the search. The results are interpreted as limits on the parameters of the minimal supergravity framework, limits on cross-sections of simplified models with specific squark and gluino decay modes, and limits on parameters of a model with bilinear R-parity violation.Comment: 18 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 9 figures, 4 tables, final version to appear in Physical Review
