    Supper: the social food app

    Get PDF
This social app aims to increase a user’s social network through dining experiences. It creates a framework for how their users are to take their connection from the digital realm to the physical one. The app cultivates friendships through individual and group connection, while providing users with suggestions on nearby restaurants to connect in person. This application aims to reach users that may be new to an area and thus may not know anyone and are largely unfamiliar with local restaurants, or even those that simply want to expand their social circle. Because meals are commonly a social or communal event, this app aids in expanding a user’s social network through dining experiences. Social apps such as Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble are designed for connection, though they largely revolve around cultivating romantic relationships while ignoring platonic ones. Along with this, there is a lack of framework for how their users are bridge physical & digital realms. Therefore I see an opportunity to create a social app that aids in expanding a user’s platonic social network with a framework for how and where to meet. This project aims to create a fully designed interface of a mobile application. 1. Improve UX design skills 2. Improve project management abilities (time, accountability, and planning

Viruses in the North Sea: viromics and prophage genomics

    Get PDF
Despite their small size, viruses have an enormous influence on microbial population dynamics, due to lysis and horizontal gene transfer. Due the high abundance of their hosts, bacteriophages or phages comprise the majority of viruses and provide the largest reservoirs of unexplored genetic diversity in marine environments. The rise of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques brings new opportunities to investigate the marine virus community. However, there is no current statutory pipeline applied in marine phage ecology. Therefore, this thesis proposes a virus-specific pipeline based on the integration of existing tools and state of the art techniques. The developed pipeline was applied to accomplish the two research aims of this thesis: (1) to analyze the virus community in the North Sea with viromics(virus metagenomics), and (2) to characterize lysogenic phages from potentially pathogenic Vibrio species. The results of the first part of this thesis show that the virus community is dominated by phages and they are not evenly distributed throughout the North Sea. In general, the coastal virus community was genetically more diverse than the open sea community. The influence of riverine inflow and currents affects the genetic virus diversity with the community carrying genes from a variety of metabolic pathways and other functions. In the second part, lysogenic Vibrio phages from the North Sea were induced (ca. 40 % of tested isolates) and four phage genomes were characterized. The phages from V. parahaemolyticus (2 tailed phages, 1 filamentous phage) and V. cholerae (1 tailed phage) can integrate into their host genome and might have a role in pathogenicity. This thesis represents an exemplary study of the virus community in the North Sea, with special emphasis on the marine phages. The settled virus-specific pipeline the obtained insights will contribute to extend the study of the virus diversity dynamics in other marine areas to characterize novel phage groups

Comparing Satellite vs Marine Potential Fields Data Over the Bathymetrists Seamounts

    Get PDF
The Bathymetrists Seamounts (BSM) are located north of the Sierra Leone Rise (SLR) in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. The seamounts reside on oceanic crust that is 105 to 45 million years old. However, dredging over the Bathymetrists Seamounts dated rocks at ~40 Myr. The general trend of the seamounts contradicts the eastward motion of the African tectonic plate. The origin and tectonic history of the Bathymetrists Seamounts remains debated in literature. Potential fields (gravity and magnetic) data can provide important insight into the formation and evolution of the seamounts. The purpose of this study is to compare available gravity and magnetic data acquired by two different methods, satellite and marine. Satellite gravity and magnetic data over the Bathymetrists Seamounts and Sierra Leone Rise are publicly available for analysis. However, this data has a relatively low resolution. In contrast, recently acquired marine data from the University of Hamburg-Germany is higher resolution, but limited to a number of 2-D profiles. Comparing satellite and marine data revealed that each provide advantages and disadvantages for geological analysis. Marine data is useful for 2-D modeling, while satellite data is better for spatial analysis. Combining both data sets will be beneficial for investigating the origin and history of the Bathymetrists Seamounts

San Andrés Island is one of the Colombian departments that registers one of the most critical situations in terms of the provision of basic sanitation services, this is defined as the minimum actions that must be adopted in an urban or rural location, so that people They can live in a healthy environment, which includes: (Water supply for human consumption, Management and proper final disposal of wastewater and excreta, and proper final disposal of municipal solid waste. According to DANE data, public service coverage home aqueduct is only 30.7% and 17.8% in sewerage (DANE, 2020), given these conditions people must opt for other means to supply themselves with drinking water where most homes do not have accounts the minimum technical requirements (Coralina, 2009) Therefore, the objective of this project Formulate operational guidelines for the disposal and storage of drinking water in order to enable the improvement of the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Serranilla de la Isla neighborhood of San Andres. The methodology consisted of documentary analysis, review of researchers' trajectories, as well as 2 instruments for data collection that were surveys and interviews that were applied to the sampled population.

    Get PDF

East Bay Coalition for the Homeless: Branding Study and Marketing Strategy

    Get PDF
There are a number of potential positioning strategies. The two which make the most sense for the EBCH are to “position the EBCH away from others in the category” and to “position the EBCH as unique.” These strategies have the advantage of setting the EBCH apart from the other organizations that address homelessness. Occupying its own “position” in the minds of potential and current donors is not only an effective communications/marketing strategy but also a less costly one because it avoids head-to-head competition and comparisons

Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30

Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector

Results of a search for H → τ τ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb−1 and 20.3 fb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic (τ → `νν¯ with ` = e, µ) and hadronic (τ → hadrons ν) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of µ = 1.43 +0.43 −0.37 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model
