    A model of the prolate chromosphere formation at the solar minimum

    Detailed observations in different chromospheric lines of a solar diameter in polar and equatorial directions showed that the polar chromosphere at the minimum phase of solar cycle looks more extended than the low-latitude chromosphere. We propose a simple geometric model to explainthe effect of the prolateness of the solar chromosphere. A specific dynamical part of the solar atmosphere above the 2 Mm level is assumed to be a mixture of moving up and down jets of chromospheric matter with the coronal plasma between them. Due to the dynamic nature of this layer, the magnetic field is considered to play a very important role in the density distribution with the height, guiding the mass flows along the field lines. The difference of the magnetic-field topology in the polar and the equatorial regions leads to different heights of the chromospheric limb

    Recently three alien invasive predatory snails have been found in the Dutch marine waters, which are identified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality as potential high risk species due to their possible impact on bivalve species (TRCPD/2009/3587). These are: Japanese oyster drill Ocinebrellus inornatus (syn: Ceratostoma inornatum, Ocenebra japonica), American oyster drill Urosalpinx cinerea and Asian rapa whelk Rapana venosa.     A line-of-sight electron cyclotron emission receiver for electron cyclotron resonance heating feedback control of tearing modes

    An electron cyclotron emission (ECE) receiver inside the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) transmission line has been brought into operation. The ECE is extracted by placing a quartz plate acting as a Fabry¿Perot interferometer under an angle inside the electron cyclotron wave (ECW) beam. ECE measurements are obtained during high power ECRH operation. Thisdemonstrates the successful operation of the diagnostic and, in particular, a sufficient suppression of the gyrotron component preventing it from interfering with ECE measurements. When integratedinto a feedback system for the control of plasma instabilities this line-of-sight ECE diagnosticremoves the need to localize the instabilities in absolute coordinates

    Determinants of co-contraction during walking before and after arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis

    Background: Knee osteoarthritis patients co-contract in knee-related muscle pairs during walking. The determinants of this co-contraction remain insufficiently clear. Methods: A heterogeneous group of 14 patients was measured before and one year after knee arthroplasty, and compared to 12 healthy peers and 15 young subjects, measured once. Participants walked on a treadmill at several imposed speeds. Bilateral activity of six muscles was registered electromyographically, and co-contraction time was calculated as percentage of stride cycle time. Local dynamic stability and variability of sagittal plane knee movements were determined. The surgeon's assessment of alignment was used. Pre-operatively, multivariate regressions on co-contraction time were used to identify determinants of co-contraction. Post-operatively it was assessed if predictor variables had changed in the same direction as co-contraction time. Findings: Patients co-contracted longer than controls, but post-operatively, differences with the healthy peers were no longer significant. Varus alignment predicted co-contraction time. No patient had post-operative varus alignment. The patients' unaffected legs were more unstable, and instability predicted co-contraction time in both legs. Post-operatively, stability normalised. Longer unaffected side co-contraction time was associated with reduced affected side kinematic variability. Post-operatively, kinematic variability had further decreased. Interpretations: Varus alignment and instability are determinants of co-contraction. The benefits of co-contraction in varus alignment require further study. Co-contraction probably increases local dynamic stability, which does not necessarily decrease the risk of falling. Unaffected side co-contraction contributed to decreasing affected side variability, but other mechanisms than co-contraction may also have played a role in decreasing variability. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.     Colonial History and Contemporary Transmission Shape the Genetic Diversity of Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 2 in Amsterdam

    Evolutionary analysis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genome sequences has provided insights into the epidemic history and transmission of this widespread human pathogen. Here we report an exceptionally diverse set of 178 HCV genotype 2 (HCV-2) isolates from 189 patients in Amsterdam, comprising 8 distinct HCV subtypes and 10 previously not recognized, unclassified lineages. By combining study subjects' demographic information with phylogeographic and molecular clock analyses, we demonstrate for the first time that the trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonial history were the driving forces behind the global dissemination of HCV-2. We detect multiple HCV-2 movements from present-day Ghana/Benin to the Caribbean during the peak years of the slave trade (1700 to 1850) and extensive transfer of HCV-2 among the Netherlands and its former colonies Indonesia and Surinam over the last 150 years. The latter coincides with the bidirectional migration of Javanese workers between Indonesia and Surinam and subsequent immigration to the Netherlands. In addition, our study sheds light on contemporary trends in HCV transmission within the Netherlands. We observe multiple lineages of the epidemic subtypes 2a, 2b, and 2c (together 67% of HCV-2 infections in Amsterdam), which cluster according to their suspected routes of transmission, specifically, injecting drug use (IDU) and contaminated blood/blood products. Understanding the epidemiological processes that generated the global pattern of HCV diversity seen today is critical for exposing associations between populations, risk factors, and specific HCV subtypes and might help HCV screening and prevention campaigns to minimize the future burden of HCV-related liver disease

    Search for H→γγ produced in association with top quarks and constraints on the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson using data taken at 7 TeV and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search is performed for Higgs bosons produced in association with top quarks using the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson. Selection requirements are optimized separately for leptonic and fully hadronic final states from the top quark decays. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb−14.5 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 20.3 fb−1 at 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the background prediction is observed and upper limits are set on the tt¯H production cross section. The observed exclusion upper limit at 95% confidence level is 6.7 times the predicted Standard Model cross section value. In addition, limits are set on the strength of the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson, taking into account the dependence of the tt¯H and tH cross sections as well as the H→γγ branching fraction on the Yukawa coupling. Lower and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set at −1.3 and +8.0 times the Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model

    Search for vectorlike B quarks in events with one isolated lepton, missing transverse momentum, and jets at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search has been performed for pair production of heavy vectorlike down-type (B) quarks. The analysis explores the lepton-plus-jets final state, characterized by events with one isolated charged lepton (electron or muon), significant missing transverse momentum, and multiple jets. One or more jets are required to be tagged as arising from b quarks, and at least one pair of jets must be tagged as arising from the hadronic decay of an electroweak boson. The analysis uses the full data sample of pp collisions recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, operating at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb −1 . No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Limits are set on vectorlike B production, as a function of the B branching ratios, assuming the allowable decay modes are B → Wt/Zb/Hb. In the chiral limit with a branching ratio of 100% for the decay B → Wt, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the vectorlike B mass is 810 GeV (760 GeV). In the case where the vectorlike B quark has branching ratio values corresponding to those of an SU(2) singlet state, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the vectorlike B mass is 640 GeV (505 GeV). The same analysis, when used to investigate pair production of a colored, charge 5/3 exotic fermion T 5/3 , with subsequent decay T 5/3 → Wt, sets an observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the T 5/3 mass of 840 GeV (780 GeV)

    Fiducial and differential cross sections of Higgs boson production measured in the four-lepton decay channel in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections of Higgs boson production in the H→ZZ∗ → 4ℓ decay channel are presented. The cross sections are determined within a fiducial phase space and corrected for detection efficiency and resolution effects. They are based on 20.3 fb−¹ of pp collision data, produced at √s = 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy at the LHC and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The differential measurements are performed in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity of the four-lepton system, the invariant mass of the subleading lepton pair and the decay angle of the leading lepton pair with respect to the beam line in the four-lepton rest frame, as well as the number of jets and the transverse momentum of the leading jet. The measured cross sections are compared to selected theoretical calculations of the Standard Model expectations. No significant deviation from any of the tested predictions is found

    Search for W′→tb→qqbb decays in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for a massive W′ gauge boson decaying to a top quark and a bottom quark is performed with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at the LHC. The dataset was taken at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=8 TeV and corresponds to 20.3 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. This analysis is done in the hadronic decay mode of the top quark, where novel jet substructure techniques are used to identify jets from high-momentum top quarks. This allows for a search for high-mass W′ bosons in the range 1.5–3.0 TeV. b-tagging is used to identify jets originating from b-quarks. The data are consistent with Standard Model background-only expectations, and upper limits at 95 % confidence level are set on the W′→tb cross section times branching ratio ranging from 0.16pb to 0.33pb for left-handed W′ bosons, and ranging from 0.10pb to 0.21pb for W′ bosons with purely right-handed couplings. Upper limits at 95 % confidence level are set on the W′-boson coupling to tb as a function of the W′ mass using an effective field theory approach, which is independent of details of particular models predicting a W′boson
