Estimating embodied carbon: a dual currency approach.
Embodied carbon (EC) estimating is a growing area of research. EC estimating is evolving since the recent past, thus, undergoing several criticisms. On the other hand, there is a lack of interest among industry practitioners on EC estimating and reporting. However, EC estimating is crucial in a world of swiftly changing climate and visible adverse consequences. Therefore, this paper covers important aspects of EC estimating and explains various sources and methods of estimating, ranging from complex to simple methods of estimating. EC estimating is further explained by case studies of seven office buildings. Further, problems like lack of a standard method of measurement, lack of a robust database/benchmark for EC, lack of EC data for modern products and lack of EC data for sophisticated services are discussed. More importantly, the paper introduces dual currency appraisal of construction projects in which EC estimating plays a crucial role
An Overview of The VERITAS Prototype Telescope And Camera
VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is the
next generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory that is being built in
southern Arizona by a collaboration of ten institutions in Canada, Ireland, the
U.K. and the U.S.A. VERITAS is designed to operate in the range from 50 GeV to
50 TeV with optimal sensitivity near 200 GeV; it will effectively overlap with
the next generation of space-based gamma-ray telescopes. The first phase of
VERITAS, consisting of four telescopes of 12 m aperture, will be operational by
the time of the GLAST launch in 2007. Eventually the array will be expanded to
include the full array of seven telescopes on a filled hexagonal grid of side
80 m. A prototype VERITAS telescope with a reduced number of mirrors and signal
channels has been built. Its design and performance is described here. The
prototype is scheduled to be upgraded to a full 499 pixel camera with 350

The composition of Singaporean shopping centres
With its growing population but limited supply of land, Singapore has seen a huge increase in the number and size of shopping centres in recent years. This growth has led to two rather contradictory outcomes - more choice for retailers in their efforts to reach customers but also claims that too many of the centres contain the same types of retailers and contain no real differentiation in their offerings. This paper looks at this trend and reports on a survey of the composition of store types in a wide range of Singaporean shopping centres to consider whether or not these views are based on a full picture of the roles played by these shopping centres
Vitamin D deficiency in traumatic brain injury and its relationship with severity of injury and quality of life: a prospective, observational study
This single-centre prospective observational study aims to describe the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) population and identify any relationship between vitamin D and severity of head injury or quality of life.
124 TBI patients had serum vitamin D (25-OHD) levels measured at the local post-TBI endocrine screening clinic over 20 months. Quality of Life after Brain Injury (QOLIBRI) questionnaires were completed by the patient concurrently. A multivariate regressional analysis was performed, controlling for age, season, ethnicity, time since injury, TBI severity and gender.
34% (n=42) of the cohort were vitamin D deficient (25-OHD <25nmol/L) with a further 23% (n=29) having insufficient levels (25-OHD 25-50nmol/L). Vitamin D was significantly lower in severe TBI compared to mild TBI (n=95, p=0.03, CI 95% -23.60 to -1.21, mean effect size 12.40 nmol/L). There was a trend for self-reported quality of life to be better in patients with optimum vitamin D levels compared to patients with deficient vitamin D levels, controlling for severity of injury (n=81, p=0.05, CI 95% -0.07 to 21.27).
This is the first study to identify a significant relationship between vitamin D levels and severity of head injury. Clinicians should actively screen for and treat VDD in head injured patients to reduce the risk of further morbidity such as osteomalacia and cardiovascular disease. Future research should establish the natural history of vitamin D levels following TBI to identify at which stage VDD develops and whether vitamin D replacement could have a beneficial effect on recovery and quality of life
The 3D Structure of N132D in the LMC: A Late-Stage Young Supernova Remnant
We have used the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the 2.3m telescope at
Siding Spring Observatory to map the [O III] 5007{\AA} dynamics of the young
oxygen-rich supernova remnant N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud. From the
resultant data cube, we have been able to reconstruct the full 3D structure of
the system of [O III] filaments. The majority of the ejecta form a ring of
~12pc in diameter inclined at an angle of 25 degrees to the line of sight. We
conclude that SNR N132D is approaching the end of the reverse shock phase
before entering the fully thermalized Sedov phase of evolution. We speculate
that the ring of oxygen-rich material comes from ejecta in the equatorial plane
of a bipolar explosion, and that the overall shape of the SNR is strongly
influenced by the pre-supernova mass loss from the progenitor star. We find
tantalizing evidence of a polar jet associated with a very fast oxygen-rich
knot, and clear evidence that the central star has interacted with one or more

Distinct H3F3A and H3F3B driver mutations define chondroblastoma and giant cell tumor of bone
It is recognized that some mutated cancer genes contribute to the development of many cancer types, whereas others are cancer type specific. For genes that are mutated in multiple cancer classes, mutations are usually similar in the different affected cancer types. Here, however, we report exquisite tumor type specificity for different histone H3.3 driver alterations. In 73 of 77 cases of chondroblastoma (95%), we found p.Lys36Met alterations predominantly encoded in H3F3B, which is one of two genes for histone H3.3. In contrast, in 92% (49/53) of giant cell tumors of bone, we found histone H3.3 alterations exclusively in H3F3A, leading to p.Gly34Trp or, in one case, p.Gly34Leu alterations. The mutations were restricted to the stromal cell population and were not detected in osteoclasts or their precursors. In the context of previously reported H3F3A mutations encoding p.Lys27Met and p.Gly34Arg or p.Gly34Val alterations in childhood brain tumors, a remarkable picture of tumor type specificity for histone H3.3 driver alterations emerges, indicating that histone H3.3 residues, mutations and genes have distinct functions
Exercise and pregnancy in recreational and elite athletes: 2016/17 evidence summary from the IOC Expert Group Meeting, Lausanne. Part 3 - Exercise in the postpartum period
This is Part 3 in the series of reviews from the IOC expert committee on exercise and pregnancy in recreational and elite athletes. Part 1 focused on the effects of training during pregnancy and on the management of common pregnancy-related complaints experienced by athletes1; Part 2 addressed maternal and fetal perinatal outcomes.2 In this part, we review the implications of pregnancy and childbirth on return to exercise and on common illnesses and complaints in the postpartum period. The postpartum period can be divided into hospital-based (during hospital stay), immediate postpartum (hospital discharge to 6 weeks postpartum) and later postpartum (6 weeks to 1 year, corresponding sometimes to cessation of breast feeding).3 In the literature, the postpartum period is usually defined as the first 6 weeks after pregnancy, during which time women have not typically been encouraged to exercise, except for strength training of the pelvic floor muscles. However, 6 weeks is an arbitrary time point and, anecdotally, many elite athletes report starting exercise inside that period. For the purpose of the present review, we consider the postpartum period to be up to 12 months following birth
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
