As it had happened among the nineteenth-century critics, Rosalía de Castro’s novel El Caballero de las Botas Azules. «Cuento Extraño» (?The Knight of the Blue Boots. Strange Story?, 1867) still allows nowadays for many varied interpretations. Not only the chapters which form this enigmatic work show semantic ambiguity, but also the paratexts which frame it. The title, the subtitle, and the original prologue of the novel provide important keys for the reader. The purpose of this paper is to offer a bibliographical description of that novel, which is hardly known in the middle nineteenth-century prose fiction, and to analyze its paratextual elements in line with its singularity.
Post-Franco Theatre
In the multiple realms and layers that comprise the contemporary Spanish theatrical landscape, “crisis” would seem to be the word that most often lingers in the air, as though it were a common mantra, ready to roll off the tongue of so many theatre professionals with such enormous ease, and even enthusiasm, that one is prompted to wonder whether it might indeed be a miracle that the contemporary technological revolution – coupled with perpetual quandaries concerning public and private funding for the arts – had not by now brought an end to the evolution of the oldest of live arts, or, at the very least, an end to drama as we know it
Revisiting ‘place’ in a realist novel: ‘Thinking space’ in Galdós’s Torquemada en la hoguera (1889)
Departing from the premise that Galdós’s close engagement with space and place deserves to be at the forefront of scholarly attention, this article provides an in-depth study of their significance in Torquemada en la hoguera. It begins by analysing the relationship between the novel’s locations and the real world, demonstrating that the author codes the city of Madrid to express social concerns and promote reader engagement. It then proceeds to examine the public and private spheres, before highlighting the “place of the imagination” in the novel. It reveals that, as in Galdós’s press articles, reality is used as a springboard in Torquemada en la hoguera and, drawing upon recent theories, it posits that places serve as a framework for engaging readers with contemporary concerns and as an imaginative springboard for Galdós. They trigger what is effectively a “thinking space” for the author and it is through unravelling their significance that we can fully appreciate Galdós’s psychological sensitivity, the novel’s modernity, its symbolic value, and imaginative depth. The article concludes by proposing that Galdós’s works deserve to be re-examined as “Novels of the Geographical Imagination” and urges readers to revisit the significance of space and place therein
Cartoons and the politics of masculinity in the spanish and american press during the war of 1898
This article examines the symbolic use of
photography and cartoons during the War
of 1898. The Spanish-American War was
a war of images as well as guns, and
cartoons and photographs were an
important ingredient in what was
nicknamed the ‘Splendid Little War’ in the
US and the ‘Disaster’ in Spain. The
political cartoon became an experimental
laboratory for the propagandistic battles
played out in the press of both countries.
Cartoons helped differentiate a nationsubject
from its Other, an abjected
alterity conventionally associated with the
feminine as well as with children, animals
and ‘undesirable’ races. The images
analyzed here reveal that honor and
manhood were at stake and help to
explain significant funds appropriated for
the war effort.
razas ‘inferiores’. Las vinetas analizadas
aquí revelan cómo el honor y la
masculinidad se pusieron en juego, lo
cual ayuda a explicar los fondos
significantes que los gobiernos asignaron
para la guerra
Racial Theory and Atavism in Pardo Bazán’s Short Fiction
Emilia Pardo Bazán was an exceptional storyteller in the modern mold,
capturing whatever scientism was circulating in popular culture at the moment. In this
way she not only showcased her considerable erudition, she challenged her readers to
contemplate alternate and sometimes contradictory ways of thinking about racial ident i
ty in a modern world in which the subject was widely debated. This essay explores her
thinking on race, atavism, heredity and evolution as exemplified in her short fiction that
sometimes contradicted what she expressed in her essays.
Like Salamanders in a Flame: The Fandango and Foreign Travellers to Spain
This article explores Pardo Bazán´s dialogue with realist representational fiction, with its voyeuristic obsessions, by revisiting certain passages in the novel Dulce Dueño and reviewing recent feminist scholarship (Bieder, Bacon, Medina and Kirkpatrick) that sees the novel to varying degrees as subversive of the male gaze. While these critics correctly see the novel as gesturing towards modernity, this article examines also its backward glance at earlier woman-plots in relation to feminine subjectivity that imagine various ways to demonstrate that woman tenía corazón.
