    In Situ Measurement of 3D Crystal Size Distribution by Double-View Image Analysis with Case Study on l-Glutamic Acid Crystallization

    An in situ measurement method is proposed for monitoring three-dimensional (3D) crystal size distribution (CSD) during a crystallization process, based on a binocular microvision system. The stereo particle shape is reconstructed from double-view images captured by two microscopic cameras fixed at different angles outside the crystallizer. To overcome the influence from solution turbulence and uneven illumination background involved with in situ imaging, a microscopic double-view image analysis method is established to identify the key corners of each particle shape in the captured images, including corner detection and corner matching. Two fast algorithms are therefore given for online detection of two typical crystal morphologies of prismatic and needle-like shapes, such as α- and β-forms of l-glutamic acid (LGA) crystals, respectively. On the basis of the identified key corners for different particle shapes, a 3D geometry model is established to approximately reconstruct the 3D shape for each imaged particle, such that 3D sizes of each particle could be quantitatively estimated, along with the particle volume. Experiments on the LGA cooling crystallization are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Pathological Features of Breast Cancer seen in Northwestern Tanzania: A Nine Years Retrospective Study.

    Breast cancer is more common in Western Countries compared to African populations. However in African population, it appears that the disease tends to be more aggressive and occurring at a relatively young age at the time of presentation. The aim of this study was to describe the trend of Breast Cancer in Northwestern Tanzania. This was a retrospective study which involved all cases of breast cancer diagnosed histologically at Bugando Medical Center from 2002 to 2010. Histological results and slides were retrieved from the records in the Pathology department, clinical information and demographic data for patients were retrieved from surgical wards and department of medical records. Histology slides were re-evaluated for the histological type, grade (By modified Bloom-Richardson score), and presence of necrosis and skin involvement. Data was entered and analyzed by SPSS computer software version 15. There were 328 patients histologically confirmed to have breast cancer, the mean age at diagnosis was 48.7 years (+/- 13.1). About half of the patients (52.4%) were below 46 years of age, and this group of patients had significantly higher tendency for lymph node metastasis (p = 0.012). The tumor size ranged from 1 cm to 18 cm in diameter with average (mean) of 5.5 cm (+/- 2.5), and median size of 6 cm. Size of the tumor (above 6 cm in diameter) and presence of necrosis within the tumor was significantly associated with high rate of lymph node metastasis (p = 0.000). Of all patients, 64% were at clinical stage III (specifically IIIB) and 70.4% had lymph node metastasis at the time of diagnosis. Only 4.3% of the patients were in clinical stage I at the time of diagnosis. Majority of the patients had invasive ductal carcinoma (91.5%) followed by mucinous carcinoma (5.2%), Invasive lobular carcinoma (3%) and in situ ductal carcinoma (0.3%). In all patients, 185 (56.4%) had tumor with histological grade 3. Breast cancer in this region show a trend towards relative young age at diagnosis with advanced stage at diagnosis and high rate of lymph node metastasis. Poor Referral system, lack of screening programs and natural aggressive biological behavior of tumor may contribute to advanced disease at the time of diagnosis

    RF IC performance optimization by synthesizing optimum inductors

    Even with optimal system design and careful choice of topology for a particular RF application, large amounts of energy are often wasted due to low-quality passives, especially inductors. Inductors have traditionally been difficult to integrate due to their inherent low quality factors and modelling complexity. Furthermore, although many different inductor configurations are available for an RF designer to explore, support for integrated inductors in electronic design automation tools and process design kits has been very limited in the past. In this chapter, a recent advance in technology-aware integrated inductor design is presented, where drawbacks of the integrated inductor design are addressed by introducing an equation-based inductor synthesis algorithm. The intelligent computation technique aims to allow RF designers to optimize integrated inductors, given the inductor center frequency dictated by the device application, and geometry constraints. This does not only lay down a foundation for system-level RF circuit performance optimization, but, because inductors are often the largest parts of an RF system, it also allows for optimal usage of chip real estate

    Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model.     What lies between market and hierarchy? Insights from internalization theory and global value chain theory

    In this paper, we suggest that internalization theory might be extended by incorporating complementary insights from GVC theory. More specifically, we argue that internalization theory can explain why lead firms might wish to externalize selected activities, but that it is largely silent on the mechanisms by which those lead firms might exercise control over the resultant externalized relationships with their GVC partners. We advance an explanation linking the choice of control mechanism to two factors: power asymmetries between the lead firms and their GVC partners, and the degree of codifiability of the information to be exchanged in the relationship

    Search for High-Mass Resonances Decaying to τν in pp Collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

    A search for high-mass resonances decaying to τν using proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV produced by the Large Hadron Collider is presented. Only τ-lepton decays with hadrons in the final state are considered. The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. No statistically significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed; model-independent upper limits are set on the visible τν production cross section. Heavy W′ bosons with masses less than 3.7 TeV in the sequential standard model and masses less than 2.2–3.8 TeV depending on the coupling in the nonuniversal G(221) model are excluded at the 95% credibility level
