Investigating the impact of combining handwritten signature and keyboard keystroke dynamics for gender prediction
© 2019 IEEE. The use of soft-biometric data as an auxiliary tool on user identification is already well known. Gender, handorientation and emotional state are some examples which can be called soft-biometrics. These soft-biometric data can be predicted directly from the biometric templates. It is very common to find researches using physiological modalities for soft-biometric prediction, but behavioural biometric is often not well explored for this context. Among the behavioural biometric modalities, keystroke dynamics and handwriting signature have been widely explored for user identification, including some soft-biometric predictions. However, in these modalities, the soft-biometric prediction is usually done in an individual way. In order to fill this space, this study aims to investigate whether the combination of those two biometric modalities can impact the performance of a soft-biometric data, gender prediction. The main aim is to assess the impact of combining data from two different biometric sources in gender prediction. Our findings indicated gains in terms of performance for gender prediction when combining these two biometric modalities, when compared to the individual ones
Gas Chromatography in the Analysis of Compounds Released from Wood into Wine
Wood has been used in alcoholic beverages for centuries, mainly as material for containers
used for alcoholic beverages aging. Recently OIV (Organisation International de la Vigne et
du Vin) approved the use of chips (Resolution oeno 3/2005) and staves as alternatives for
barrels. These practices are being rapidly spread among winemakers. The increased used of
these alternatives are mainly related to low investments, similar sensorial results obtained in
shorter time, simplicity of use and the possibility of avoiding contamination and offflavours,
too-often related to aged or contaminated barrels.
Besides oak, other woods are being looked at for enological purposes, such as acacia, cherry,
chestnut and mulberry. Their characteristics are commonly compared to oak. In the past,
chestnut (Castanea sativa) was widely used in the Mediterranean area, because of its
availability and its cheap price. Chestnut wood has higher porosity than oak. Cherry wood
(Prunus avium) has high porosity and oxygen permeation, and is usually used for short
aging times. Acacia wood (Robinia pseudoacacia) is hard, with low porosity. Mulberry wood
(Morus alba and Morus nigra) is tender and elastic, with medium porosity, and is
characterized by a low release of compounds. The lack of properties for cooperage is now
overcome by their possible use as staves or chips.
The aim of this work is to present an overview on volatile and semi-volatile composition of
different kind of wood with oenological interest. Within this purpose, this work will be
focused on a bibliographic review of the most used chromatographic methods for
characterization of volatile and semi-volatile compounds, including also a brief description
of the most common reported sample preparation methods for chromatographic analysis
Ricci-flat deformation of orbifolds and localized tachyonic modes
We study Ricci-flat deformations of orbifolds in type II theory. We obtain a
simple formula for mass corrections to the twisted modes due to the
deformations, and apply it to originally tachyonic and massless states in
several examples. In the case of supersymmetric orbifolds, we find that
tachyonic states appear when the deformation breaks all the supersymmetries. We
also study nonsupersymmetric orbifolds C^2/Z_{2N(2N+1)}, which is T-dual to N
type 0 NS5-branes. For N>=2, we compute mass corrections for states, which have
string scale tachyonic masses. We find that the corrected masses coincide to
ones obtained by solving the wave equation for the tachyon field in the smeared
type 0 NS5-brane background geometry. For N=1, we show that the unstable mode
representing the bubble creation is the unique tachyonic mode.Comment: 20 pages, minor collection
Sensorial analysis and electronic aroma detection to compare olive oils produced by different extraction methods
Análisis sensorial y detección electrónica de aromas para comparar aceites obtenidos por diferentes métodos de extracción
A sensorial analysis and an aroma analysis by electronic sensory devices were used to compare olive oils produced according to two different extraction methods. The extraction methods compared were the press system and two phase decanter. Samples were taken from the harvests of 2002-2004 and the olives were all from the same variety. The variety used was the Portuguese Galega sp. Olives were picked and technologically handled under predetermined and supervised conditions. Olive oils produced were better classified when the sensory analysis by a panel was applied than when an electronic sensory analysis was performed, even after sensor optimization. This observation is in accordance with the fact that olive oil has a low volatility matrix and “flavor”, rather than aroma, can give a clearer characterization than electronic sensory analysis alone, where aroma is the main characteristic evaluated.El análisis sensorial y el análisis de aromas por medio de sistemas sensoriales electrónicos han sido utilizado para comparar aceites de oliva producidos a través de dos sistemas de extracción diferentes.
Los mĂ©todos de extracciĂłn comparados han sido el sistema de prensas y el decantador de dos fases. Las muestras fueron producidas durante las cosechas del periodo 2002- 2004, y las aceitunas eran todas de la misma variedad portuguesa Gallega sp. Las aceitunas fueron seleccionadas y tratadas tecnolĂłgicamente bajo condiciones predeterminadas y supervisadas. Los aceites producidos resultaron mejor clasificados cuando fue aplicado el análisis sensorial por panel que cuando se utilizĂł el análisis con detecciĂłn electrĂłnica de aromas, incluso despuĂ©s de la optimizaciĂłn de los sensores. Esta observaciĂłn está de acuerdo con el hecho de que los aceites son una matriz poco volátil y que es el “flavour”, más que el aroma, el que junto con el gusto puede proporcionar una caracterizaciĂłn mejor que la detecciĂłn electrĂłnica, en la que el aroma es la principal caracterĂstica evaluada
Systematic effects in the extraction of the 'WMAP haze'
The extraction of a 'haze' from the WMAP microwave skymaps is based on
subtraction of known foregrounds, viz. free-free (bremsstrahlung), thermal dust
and synchrotron, each traced by other skymaps. While the 408 MHz all-sky survey
is used for the synchrotron template, the WMAP bands are at tens of GHz where
the spatial distribution of the radiating cosmic ray electrons ought to be
quite different because of the energy-dependence of their diffusion in the
Galaxy. The systematic uncertainty this introduces in the residual skymap is
comparable to the claimed haze and can, for certain source distributions, have
a very similar spectrum and latitudinal profile and even a somewhat similar
morphology. Hence caution must be exercised in interpreting the 'haze' as a
physical signature of, e.g., dark matter annihilation in the Galactic centre.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures; improved diffusion model; extended discussion

Extreme Ultra-Violet Spectroscopy of the Lower Solar Atmosphere During Solar Flares
The extreme ultraviolet portion of the solar spectrum contains a wealth of
diagnostic tools for probing the lower solar atmosphere in response to an
injection of energy, particularly during the impulsive phase of solar flares.
These include temperature and density sensitive line ratios, Doppler shifted
emission lines and nonthermal broadening, abundance measurements, differential
emission measure profiles, and continuum temperatures and energetics, among
others. In this paper I shall review some of the advances made in recent years
using these techniques, focusing primarily on studies that have utilized data
from Hinode/EIS and SDO/EVE, while also providing some historical background

Toward an internally consistent astronomical distance scale
Accurate astronomical distance determination is crucial for all fields in
astrophysics, from Galactic to cosmological scales. Despite, or perhaps because
of, significant efforts to determine accurate distances, using a wide range of
methods, tracers, and techniques, an internally consistent astronomical
distance framework has not yet been established. We review current efforts to
homogenize the Local Group's distance framework, with particular emphasis on
the potential of RR Lyrae stars as distance indicators, and attempt to extend
this in an internally consistent manner to cosmological distances. Calibration
based on Type Ia supernovae and distance determinations based on gravitational
lensing represent particularly promising approaches. We provide a positive
outlook to improvements to the status quo expected from future surveys,
missions, and facilities. Astronomical distance determination has clearly

Sensitivity of the IceCube Detector to Astrophysical Sources of High Energy Muon Neutrinos
We present the results of a Monte-Carlo study of the sensitivity of the
planned IceCube detector to predicted fluxes of muon neutrinos at TeV to PeV
energies. A complete simulation of the detector and data analysis is used to
study the detector's capability to search for muon neutrinos from sources such
as active galaxies and gamma-ray bursts. We study the effective area and the
angular resolution of the detector as a function of muon energy and angle of
incidence. We present detailed calculations of the sensitivity of the detector
to both diffuse and pointlike neutrino emissions, including an assessment of
the sensitivity to neutrinos detected in coincidence with gamma-ray burst
observations. After three years of datataking, IceCube will have been able to
detect a point source flux of E^2*dN/dE = 7*10^-9 cm^-2s^-1GeV at a 5-sigma
significance, or, in the absence of a signal, place a 90% c.l. limit at a level
E^2*dN/dE = 2*10^-9 cm^-2s^-1GeV. A diffuse E-2 flux would be detectable at a
minimum strength of E^2*dN/dE = 1*10^-8 cm^-2s^-1sr^-1GeV. A gamma-ray burst
model following the formulation of Waxman and Bahcall would result in a 5-sigma
effect after the observation of 200 bursts in coincidence with satellite
