    When emotions are expressed figuratively:psycholinguistic and affective norms of 619 idioms for German (PANIG)

    Despite flourishing research on the relationship between emotion and literal language, and despite the pervasiveness of figurative expressions in communication, the role of figurative language in conveying affect has been under-investigated. This study provides affective and psycholinguistic norms for 619 German idiomatic expressions and explores the relationships between affective and psycholinguistic idiom properties. German native speakers rated each idiom for emotional valence, arousal, familiarity, semantic transparency, figurativeness, and concreteness. They also described the figurative meaning of each idiom, and rated how confident they were on the attributed meaning. Results showed that idioms rated high in valence were also rated high in arousal. Negative idioms were rated as more arousing than positive ones, in line with results on single words. Furthermore, arousal correlated positively with figurativeness (supporting the idea that figurative expressions are more emotionally engaging than literal expressions) and with concreteness and semantic transparency. This suggests that idioms may convey a more direct reference to sensory representations, mediated by the meaning of their constituting words. Arousal correlated positively with familiarity. In addition, positive idioms were rated as more familiar than negative idioms. Finally, idioms without a literal counterpart were rated as more emotionally valenced and arousing than idioms with a literal counterpart. Although the meaning of ambiguous idioms was less correctly defined than that of unambiguous idioms, ambiguous idioms were rated as more concrete than unambiguous ones.     READING and FEELING: the effects of a literature-based intervention designed to increase emotional competence in second and third graders

    Emotional competence has an important influence on development in school. We hypothesized that reading and discussing children’s books with emotional content increases children’s emotional competence. To examine this assumption, we developed a literature-based intervention, named READING and FEELING, and tested it on 104 second and third graders in their after-school care center. Children who attended the same care center but did not participate in the emotion-centered literary program formed the control group (N = 104). Our goal was to promote emotional competence and to evaluate the effectiveness of the READING and FEELING program. Emotional competence variables were measured prior to the intervention and nine weeks later, at the end of the program. Results revealed significant improvements in the emotional vocabulary, explicit emotional knowledge, and recognition of masked feelings. Regarding the treatment effect for detecting masked feelings, we found that boys benefited significantly more than girls. These findings underscore the assumption that children’s literature is an appropriate vehicle to support the development of emotional competence in middle childhood

    Repercussion of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the gene expression of human osteoblasts

    Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used in clinical practice, which can have adverse effects on the osteoblast. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of NSAIDs on the osteoblast by analyzing the gene expression of different markers related to osteoblast maturation and function when treated in vitro with different NSAIDs. Expression of RUNX-2, COL-I, OSX, was reduced by treatment with all studied NSAIDs, OSC expression was reduced by all NSAIDs except for ketoprofen, naproxen, or piroxicam. Expression of BMP-7 was reduced by all NSAIDs; BMP-2 was reduced by all except for naproxen. In general, NSAID treatment increased the expression of TGF- 1, but not of its receptors (TGF -R1, TGF -R2, and TFG -R3), which was either unchanged or reduced by the treatment. These data confirm that NSAIDs can affect osteoblast physiology, suggesting their possible impact on bone.This study was supported by research group BIO277 (Junta de Andalucía) and Department of Nursing (University of Granada).     On the Spiral Structure of the Milky Way Galaxy

    We consider the possible pattern of the overall spiral structure of the Galaxy, using data on the distribution of neutral (atomic), molecular, and ionized hydrogen, on the base of the hypothesis of the spiral structure being symmetric, i.e. the assumption that spiral arms are translated into each other for a rotation around the galactic center by 180{\deg} (a two-arm pattern) or by 90{\deg} (a four-arm pattern). We demonstrate that, for the inner region, the observations are best represented with a four-arm scheme of the spiral pattern, associated with all-Galaxy spiral density waves. The basic position is that of the Carina arm, reliably determined from distances to HII regions and from HI and H2 radial velocities. This pattern is continued in the quadrants III and IV with weak outer HI arms; from their morphology, the Galaxy should be considered an asymmetric multi-arm spiral. The kneed shape of the outer arms that consist of straight segments can indicate that these arms are transient formations that appeared due to a gravitational instability in the gas disk. The distances between HI superclouds in the two arms that are the brightest in neutral hydrogen, the Carina arm and the Cygnus (Outer) arm, concentrate to two values, permitting to assume the presence of a regular magnetic field in these arms.Comment: 21 pages, 14 fugures; accepted for publication in Astronomichesky Journal (Astron.     Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results

    The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric and coronal heating.     A Selective Interplay between Aberrant EPSPKA and INaP Reduces Spike Timing Precision in Dentate Granule Cells of Epileptic Rats

    Spike timing precision is a fundamental aspect of neuronal information processing in the brain. Here we examined the temporal precision of input–output operation of dentate granule cells (DGCs) in an animal model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). In TLE, mossy fibers sprout and establish recurrent synapses on DGCs that generate aberrant slow kainate receptor–mediated excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPKA) not observed in controls. We report that, in contrast to time-locked spikes generated by EPSPAMPA in control DGCs, aberrant EPSPKA are associated with long-lasting plateaus and jittered spikes during single-spike mode firing. This is mediated by a selective voltage-dependent amplification of EPSPKA through persistent sodium current (INaP) activation. In control DGCs, a current injection of a waveform mimicking the slow shape of EPSPKA activates INaP and generates jittered spikes. Conversely in epileptic rats, blockade of EPSPKA or INaP restores the temporal precision of EPSP–spike coupling. Importantly, EPSPKA not only decrease spike timing precision at recurrent mossy fiber synapses but also at perforant path synapses during synaptic integration through INaP activation. We conclude that a selective interplay between aberrant EPSPKA and INaP severely alters the temporal precision of EPSP–spike coupling in DGCs of chronic epileptic rats

    Quantitative proteome landscape of the NCI-60 cancer cell lines

    Here we describe a proteomic data resource for the NCI-60 cell lines generated by pressure cycling technology and SWATH mass spectrometry. We developed the DIA-expert software to curate and visualize the SWATH data, leading to reproducible detection of over 3,100 SwissProt proteotypic proteins and systematic quantification of pathway activities. Stoichiometric relationships of interacting proteins for DNA replication, repair, the chromatin remodeling NuRD complex, β-catenin, RNA metabolism, and prefoldins are more evident than that at the mRNA level. The data are available in CellMiner (discover.nci.nih.gov/cellminercdb and discover.nci.nih.gov/cellminer), allowing casual users to test hypotheses and perform integrative, cross-database analyses of multi-omic drug response correlations for over 20,000 drugs. We demonstrate the value of proteome data in predicting drug response for over 240 clinically relevant chemotherapeutic and targeted therapies. In summary, we present a novel proteome resource for the NCI-60, together with relevant software tools, and demonstrate the benefit of proteome analyses

    Factores dinámicos en el comportamiento de delincuentes juveniles con perfil de ajuste social. Un estudio de reincidencia

    Este estudio tiene por objeto evaluar el riesgo de reincidencia, analizando el impacto de los factores dinámicos en adolescentes en conflicto con la ley (ACL). Para ello, se evalúa una muestra de 157 ACL con perfil de ajuste social mediante el instrumento para la evaluación del riesgo de violencia de adolescentes Structured Assesment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY), además de otras técnicas de análisis cualitativo que triangulan el proceso empírico. Por un lado, destaca que la amplia estructura relacional y la vinculación intermitente con redes formales e informales de aprendizaje y empleo de que disponen los ACL con perfil de ajuste estiman un buen nivel de ajuste futuro y una baja reincidencia delictiva. Por otro lado, la escasa autonomía para resolver problemas y la impulsividad en la gestión de dificultades amplían el riesgo de reincidencia delictiva. Un foco de interés reside en las relaciones e influencias que el ACL establece con su entorno, para evitar prácticas de riesgo o someterse a ellas.
