A Cluster Method for the Ashkin--Teller Model
A cluster Monte Carlo algorithm for the Ashkin-Teller (AT) model is
constructed according to the guidelines of a general scheme for such
algorithms. Its dynamical behaviour is tested for the square lattice AT model.
We perform simulations on the line of critical points along which the exponents
vary continuously, and find that critical slowing down is significantly
reduced. We find continuous variation of the dynamical exponent along the
line, following the variation of the ratio , in a manner which
satisfies the Li-Sokal bound , that was so far
proved only for Potts models.Comment: 18 pages, Revtex, figures include
Critical properties of the Antiferromagnetic \RP2$ model in three dimensions
We study the behavior of the antiferromagnetic RP model in . The
vacuum structure is analyzed in the critical and low temperature regions,
paying special attention to the spontaneous symmetry breaking pattern. Near the
critical point we observe a full breakdown of the O(3) symmetry of the action.
Several methods for computing critical exponents are compared. We conclude that
the most solid determination is obtained using a measure of the correlation
length. Corrections-to-scaling are parameterized, yielding a very accurate
determination of the critical coupling and a 5\% error measure of the related
exponent. This is used to estimate the systematic errors due to finite-size
effects.Comment: 31 pages, 10 postscript figure
Caspase-11 regulates the tumour suppressor function of STAT1 in a murine model of colitis-associated carcinogenesis
Murine inflammatory caspase-11 has an important role in intestinal epithelial inflammation and barrier function. Activation of the non-canonical inflammasome, mediated by caspase-11, serves as a regulatory pathway for the production of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1ÎČ and IL-18, and has a key role in pyroptotic cell death. We have previously demonstrated a protective role for caspase-11 during dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, however the importance of caspase-11 during colorectal tumour development remains unclear. Here, we show that Casp11â/â mice are highly susceptible to the azoxymethane (AOM)-DSS model of colitis-associated cancer (CAC), compared to their wild type (WT) littermates. We show that deficient IL-18 production occurs at initial inflammation stages of disease, and that IL-1ÎČ production is more significantly impaired in Casp11â/â colons during established CAC. We identify defective STAT1 activation in Casp11â/â colons during disease progression, and show that IL-1ÎČ signalling induces caspase-11 expression and STAT1 activation in primary murine macrophages and intestinal epithelial cells. These findings uncover an anti-tumour role for the caspase-11 and the non-canonical inflammasome during CAC, and suggest a critical role for caspase-11, linking IL-1ÎČ and STAT1 signalling pathways
The three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising model: Monte Carlo results
We perform a high-statistics simulation of the three-dimensional randomly
dilute Ising model on cubic lattices with . We choose a
particular value of the density, x=0.8, for which the leading scaling
corrections are suppressed. We determine the critical exponents, obtaining , , , and ,
in agreement with previous numerical simulations. We also estimate numerically
the fixed-point values of the four-point zero-momentum couplings that are used
in field-theoretical fixed-dimension studies. Although these results somewhat
differ from those obtained using perturbative field theory, the
field-theoretical estimates of the critical exponents do not change
significantly if the Monte Carlo result for the fixed point is used. Finally,
we determine the six-point zero-momentum couplings, relevant for the
small-magnetization expansion of the equation of state, and the invariant
amplitude ratio that expresses the universality of the free-energy
density per correlation volume. We find .Comment: 34 pages, 7 figs, few correction
Masses and Phase Structure in the Ginzburg-Landau Model
We study numerically the phase structure of the Ginzburg-Landau model, with
particular emphasis on mass measurements. There is no local gauge invariant
order parameter, but we find that there is a phase transition characterized by
a vanishing photon mass. For type I superconductors the transition is of 1st
order. For type II 1st order is excluded by susceptibility analysis, but the
photon correlation length suggests 2nd order critical behaviour with \nu ~ 1/2.
The scalar mass, in contrast, does not show clear critical behaviour in the
type II regime for V \to \infty, contrary to the conventional picture.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. More data gathered, allowing more definite

Probability distribution of the order parameter for the 3D Ising model universality class: a high precision Monte Carlo study
We study the probability distribution P(M) of the order parameter (average
magnetization) M, for the finite-size systems at the critical point. The
systems under consideration are the 3-dimensional Ising model on a simple cubic
lattice, and its 3-state generalization known to have remarkably small
corrections to scaling. Both models are studied in a cubic box with periodic
boundary conditions. The model with reduced corrections to scaling makes it
possible to determine P(M) with unprecedented precision. We also obtain a
simple, but remarkably accurate approximate formula describing the universal
shape of P(M).Comment: 6 pages, 6 Postscript figures, uses RevTe
Quantum Griffiths effects and smeared phase transitions in metals: theory and experiment
In this paper, we review theoretical and experimental research on rare region
effects at quantum phase transitions in disordered itinerant electron systems.
After summarizing a few basic concepts about phase transitions in the presence
of quenched randomness, we introduce the idea of rare regions and discuss their
importance. We then analyze in detail the different phenomena that can arise at
magnetic quantum phase transitions in disordered metals, including quantum
Griffiths singularities, smeared phase transitions, and cluster-glass
formation. For each scenario, we discuss the resulting phase diagram and
summarize the behavior of various observables. We then review several recent
experiments that provide examples of these rare region phenomena. We conclude
by discussing limitations of current approaches and open questions.Comment: 31 pages, 7 eps figures included, v2: discussion of the dissipative

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
