Solving Lattice QCD systems of equations using mixed precision solvers on GPUs
Modern graphics hardware is designed for highly parallel numerical tasks and
promises significant cost and performance benefits for many scientific
applications. One such application is lattice quantum chromodyamics (lattice
QCD), where the main computational challenge is to efficiently solve the
discretized Dirac equation in the presence of an SU(3) gauge field. Using
NVIDIA's CUDA platform we have implemented a Wilson-Dirac sparse matrix-vector
product that performs at up to 40 Gflops, 135 Gflops and 212 Gflops for double,
single and half precision respectively on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280 GPU. We have
developed a new mixed precision approach for Krylov solvers using reliable
updates which allows for full double precision accuracy while using only single
or half precision arithmetic for the bulk of the computation. The resulting
BiCGstab and CG solvers run in excess of 100 Gflops and, in terms of iterations
until convergence, perform better than the usual defect-correction approach for

Primordial perturbations in a non singular bouncing universe model
We construct a simple non singular cosmological model in which the currently
observed expansion phase was preceded by a contraction. This is achieved, in
the framework of pure general relativity, by means of a radiation fluid and a
free scalar field having negative energy. We calculate the power spectrum of
the scalar perturbations that are produced in such a bouncing model and find
that, under the assumption of initial vacuum state for the quantum field
associated with the hydrodynamical perturbation, this leads to a spectral index
n=-1. The matching conditions applying to this bouncing model are derived and
shown to be different from those in the case of a sharp transition. We find
that if our bounce transition can be smoothly connected to a slowly contracting

Has the Universe always expanded ?
We consider a cosmological setting for which the currently expanding era is
preceded by a contracting phase, that is, we assume the Universe experienced at
least one bounce. We show that scalar hydrodynamic perturbations lead to a
singular behavior of the Bardeen potential and/or its derivatives (i.e. the
curvature) for whatever Universe model for which the last bounce epoch can be
smoothly and causally joined to the radiation dominated era. Such a Universe
would be filled with non-linear perturbations long before nucleosynthesis, and
would thus be incompatible with observations. We therefore conclude that no
observable bounce could possibly have taken place in the early universe if
Einstein gravity together with hydrodynamical fluids is to describe its
evolution, and hence, under these conditions, that the Universe has always

Indicadores de qualidade do solo em sistemas de cultivo orgânico e convencional no semi-árido Cearense.
A qualidade do solo pode mudar com o passar do tempo, em decorrência de eventos naturais ou ações antrópicas. A adoção de práticas de cultivo orgânico reduz o revolvimento do solo, favorecendo a recuperação de suas propriedades
físicas e químicas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo comparar propriedades físicas,químicas e biológicas de solos cultivados com algodão em bases orgânicas e no
sistema convencional, assim como identificar as que possam ser utilizadas como indicadores de qualidade do solo. Selecionaram-se seis áreas submetidas ao cultivo orgânico e três ao cultivo convencional para coleta de amostras de solo deformadas e indeformadas, nas camadas de 0–10, 10–20 e 20–30 cm. Técnicas de estatística univariada e multivariada foram utilizadas para análise dos dados. Os resultados mostraram que os indicadores físicos e químicos testados individualmente não foram sensíveis para diferenciar as áreas sob sistema de cultivo orgânico daquelas sob cultivo convencional. No entanto, a aplicação de técnicas de análise multivariada – no caso, componentes principais e a discriminante de Anderson – permitiu a distinção entre algumas áreas cultivadas sob cultivo orgânico comparativamente às convencionais, até mesmo as que estavam em transição.Dos indicadores biológicos, a fauna edáfica mostrou-se mais precisa na avaliação
da qualidade do solo, distinguindo de forma satisfatória as áreas sob sistema de cultivo orgânico das que estavam sob sistema convencional
Impact of acute exposure to air pollution on the cardiorespiratory performance of military firemen
Measurement of charm production at central rapidity in proton-proton collisions at TeV
The -differential production cross sections of the prompt (B
feed-down subtracted) charmed mesons D, D, and D in the rapidity
range , and for transverse momentum GeV/, were
measured in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ALICE
detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis exploited the hadronic
decays DK, DK, DD, and their charge conjugates, and was performed on a
nb event sample collected in 2011 with a
minimum-bias trigger. The total charm production cross section at TeV and at 7 TeV was evaluated by extrapolating to the full phase space
the -differential production cross sections at TeV
and our previous measurements at TeV. The results were compared
to existing measurements and to perturbative-QCD calculations. The fraction of

Particle-yield modification in jet-like azimuthal di-hadron correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
The yield of charged particles associated with high- trigger
particles ( GeV/) is measured with the ALICE detector in
Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV relative to proton-proton
collisions at the same energy. The conditional per-trigger yields are extracted
from the narrow jet-like correlation peaks in azimuthal di-hadron correlations.
In the 5% most central collisions, we observe that the yield of associated
charged particles with transverse momenta GeV/ on the
away-side drops to about 60% of that observed in pp collisions, while on the

Evolutionary design of decision-tree algorithms tailored to microarray gene expression data sets
Decision-tree induction algorithms are widely used in machine learning applications in which the goal is to extract knowledge from data and present it in a graphically intuitive way. The most successful strategy for inducing decision trees is the greedy top-down recursive approach, which has been continuously improved by researchers over the past 40 years. In this paper, we propose a paradigm shift in the research of decision trees: instead of proposing a new manually designed method for inducing decision trees, we propose automatically designing decision-tree induction algorithms tailored to a specific type of classification data set (or application domain). Following recent breakthroughs in the automatic design of machine learning algorithms, we propose a hyper-heuristic evolutionary algorithm called hyper-heuristic evolutionary algorithm for designing decision-tree algorithms (HEAD-DT) that evolves design components of top-down decision-tree induction algorithms. By the end of the evolution, we expect HEAD-DT to generate a new and possibly better decision-tree algorithm for a given application domain. We perform extensive experiments in 35 real-world microarray gene expression data sets to assess the performance of HEAD-DT, and compare it with very well known decision-tree algorithms such as C4.5, CART, and REPTree. Results show that HEAD-DT is capable of generating algorithms that significantly outperform the baseline manually designed decision-tree algorithms regarding predictive accuracy and F-measure
Efeitos da adubação foliar em cultivares de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)
This research deals with the effects of the application of three foliar fertilizers (Rhodia, Colombina and Wuxal)on growth and productivity of three beans cultivars (Carioca, Rosinha and Goiano), under greenhouse conditions. Plants growing in pots received three applications of the products at 10, 25 and 40 days after germination. Similar behavior was observed with the three cultivars. It was observed reduction in plant lenght treated with Wuxal, but no significant differences were found between the treatment with Rhodia 0,2 ml/l, Colombina 3 ml/l and Wuxal 2,5 ml/l on number of pods, number of seeds and seeds production.Estudou-se em condições de casa de vegetação, a ação de três adubos foliares comerciais (Rhodia, Colombina e Wuxal) em três cultivares de feijoeiro (Carioca, Rosinha e Goiano). As plantas receberam três aplicações dos produtos, respectivamente, 10, 25 e dias após a emergência. Foi determinado o efeito dos tratamentos no desenvolvimento e na produtividade das plantas. Verificou-se que os cultivares comportaram-se similarmente quanto aos parâmetros analisados, não ocorrendo interações significativas com os adubos utilizados. Apesar da redução na altura das plantas tratadas com Wuxal, a análise dos resultados referentes ao número de vagens e sementes, além do peso de sementes, não revelou efeito significativo da aplicação de Rhodia 0,2 ml/l, Colombina 3,0 ml/l e Wuxal 2,5 ml/l sobre os parâmetros estudados
Altered glucose homeostasis and hepatic function in obese mice deficient for both kinin receptor genes
The Kallikrein-Kinin System (KKS) has been implicated in several aspects of metabolism, including the regulation of glucose homeostasis and adiposity. Kinins and des-Arg-kinins are the major effectors of this system and promote their effects by binding to two different receptors, the kinin B2 and B1 receptors, respectively. To understand the influence of the KKS on the pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), we generated an animal model deficient for both kinin receptor genes and leptin (obB1B2KO). Six-month-old obB1B2KO mice showed increased blood glucose levels. Isolated islets of the transgenic animals were more responsive to glucose stimulation releasing greater amounts of insulin, mainly in 3-month-old mice, which was corroborated by elevated serum C-peptide concentrations. Furthermore, they presented hepatomegaly, pronounced steatosis, and increased levels of circulating transaminases. This mouse also demonstrated exacerbated gluconeogenesis during the pyruvate challenge test. The hepatic abnormalities were accompanied by changes in the gene expression of factors linked to glucose and lipid metabolisms in the liver. Thus, we conclude that kinin receptors are important for modulation of insulin secretion and for the preservation of normal glucose levels and hepatic functions in obese mice, suggesting a protective role of the KKS regarding complications associated with obesity and T2DM
