Several Italian comic strips circulated in the comic book Animal, Feio, Forte e Formal. Primarily originating from the magazines Cannibale and Frigidaire, these comics addressed issues related to attitudes that aimed to mock the institutionalized morality of the context, through a critical stance towards society, often illustrated by an aesthetic of the grotesque, which intended to question the Brazilian social context of the 1980s. In this sense, this work aims to analyze nihilism and the aesthetics of the grotesque as common elements characteristic of the Italian comic strips present in the pages of the comic book Animal, Feio, Forte e Formal. It will seek to understand the ways in which the Brazilian magazine circulated a questioning stance towards the moral values constructed for the social context of its production. The method corresponds to analyses in the fields of history and philosophy under the light of theoretical frameworks on nihilism, the aesthetics of the grotesque, and research in comic strips. The expected results demonstrate how the magazine in question constituted a space for manifestations of nihilism and the grotesque as elements that questioned the institutions that sought to impose moral and behavioral standards in that context
Regulation and Corruption: theoretical debates, empirical findings, and the role of Regulatory Process quality
This article examines the multiple relationships between state regulation and corruption, articulating theoretical contributions and recent empirical evidence. It initially revisits the main explanatory formulations regarding the functions of regulation, notably public interest theories and regulatory capture theories, as well as their contemporary reappraisals. It then analyzes empirical studies that demonstrate the ambiguity and non-linearity of the interactions between the volume of regulation and the risk of corruption. Finally, it explores the importance of the quality of the regulatory process and of meta-regulation as institutional strategies for corruption prevention, highlighting instruments such as regulatory impact assessment, public consultations and hearings, decision-making collegiality, and qualified social participation. It concludes that strengthening the quality of the regulatory process is a structural component of public integrity policies, contributing to greater resilience of regulatory systems in the face of the risks of capture and corruption

Susan Sontag and China: the professional traveler in an archaeology of conceptions
This article aims to investigate travel as an experience in three texts by Susan Sontag: the short story “Project for a trip to China,” which is part of the collection I etcetera (1978), and the essays “Questions of Travel” (1984), which is part of the book Where the Stress Falls (2005), and “Trip to Hanoi”, part of the book Style of Radical Will (2005), in order to examine how the act of traveling and narrating constitute a literary theme, experience, and exercise of otherness. Part of the reflections on travel are based on Machado and Pageaux (1988) and Chevalier and Gheerbrant (2001). To this end, we also draw on brief notions of autofiction and authorship, with texts by Lejeune (2008), Arfuch (2010), and Bakhtin (2000). By establishing connections between the two texts, we seek to highlight the relevance of travel both as an aesthetic metaphor and as a critical category that runs through Sontag\u27s work
HIV-associated neurological infections in a Brazilian tertiary care center: clinical-epidemiological features and predictors of in-hospital mortality
Neurological manifestations remain a significant cause of hospitalization and in-hospital mortality among people living with HIV (PLWH), even in the era of antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study aims to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of PLWH with neurological opportunistic infections (nOIs) and to identify factors associated with in-hospital mortality. We conducted a retrospective cohort study with PLWH aged >18 years hospitalized due to nOIs between November 2017 and December 2021 at a tertiary hospital in Brazil. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were extracted from electronic medical records. Logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between patient characteristics and in-hospital mortality. Among 237 hospitalized PLWH, 89 (37.6%) had nOIs. The median CD4 count at admission was 55 cells/mm³ (IQR 22.5–149), and 91.7% had previously used ART (only 22.7% used it regularly). The most frequent infections were cerebral toxoplasmosis (50.6%), cryptococcal meningitis (10.1%), and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (9%). A total of 19 in-hospital deaths occurred. In the multivariate analysis, undefined neurological infections (aOR: 8.67; 95%CI: 1.23–61.17) and ICU admission (aOR: 58.61; 95% CI: 10.24–335.49) were independently associated with mortality. In conclusion, severe immunosuppression and low ART adherence were common in this cohort. Cerebral toxoplasmosis was the most prevalent neurological infection. ICU admission and undefined neurological syndromes were strong predictors of in-hospital mortality. Early diagnosis, prompt treatment, and strategies to improve ART adherence are essential to reduce fatal outcomes in this population

Genetic variants of EBI3, tumor Epstein-Barr virus, and human cytomegalovirus status in HPV-negative oral cancer
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), a malignancy with high recurrence rate and poor survival, may be influenced by immune-related genetic variations and oncogenic viruses. Objective This study evaluated the clinical relevance of EBI3 polymorphisms, along with tumor Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) and Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) status, in prognostically adverse HPV-negative OSCCs. Methodology EBI3 (rs4740, rs4905, rs428253) genotyping was performed by qPCR in 95 HPV-negative OSCC patients and 108 age- and sex-matched controls. Tumor HPV, EBV, and HCMV status were assessed by qPCR. EBV viral load was calculated by exponential approach and a relative estimate of EBV copies per 105 cells. Associations with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. Results EBV-positive tumors showed a significant association with increasing nodal stage (P=0.020). EBV viral load stratification (negative, low, high) presented a non-significant trend toward association with advanced tumor stage (P=0.060). Notably, EBI3 rs428253 predicted worse OS in EBV-positive patients, whereas rs4740 and rs4905 variants were associated with advanced tumor stage (P=0.024 and P=0.018). rs4740 and rs4905 variants were inversely associated with OSCC risk in dominant and overdominant models. Analysis detected HCMV in 7.4% of tumors but was not clinically relevant. Conclusions EBI3 genetic variants and EBV status may have prognostic relevance in HPV-negative OSCC. EBV may interact with the host genetics to influence nodal metastases and outcomes, suggesting a potential EBV-EBI3 axis, which warrants further investigation. Future precision oncology approaches may incorporate host and viral genetic markers to identify and stratify high-risk HPV-negative OSCC patients
