    Microfocus X-ray scattering investigations of eggshell nanotexture

    The avian eggshell is a highly ordered calcitic bioceramic composite, with both inorganic and organic constituents. The interactions between the inorganic and organic components within the structure are poorly understood but are likely to occur at the nanometre level. Thus structural variation at this level may impinge on the overall structural integrity and mechanical performance of the eggshell, and therefore analysis at this level is fundamental in fully understanding this ordered structure. In this study, structural changes in the mineral crystallites were investigated by microfocus small-angle X-ray scattering (µSAXS) using synchrotron radiation. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) can be used to investigate structures on the nanometre scale such as size, shape, arrangement and internal porosity. A microfocused X-ray beam, 1.5 µm vertically by 7 µm, was used to produce vertical linear scans of the eggshell section. SAXS patterns were taken from the eggshell membrane (inner surface of the eggshell) to the cuticle (outer surface of the eggshell). This allowed textural variations within the eggshell to be mapped. The scattering intensity profile was then used to derive the dimension of scattering objects that define the nanotexture. The nanotexture observed may result from the presence of the organic matrix, which is embedded as intracrystalline particles producing voids within the calcified framework of large (>1 µm) calcite crystals. Porod analysis revealed the average size of a scattering interface to be approximately 4.5 nm with small changes that had a depth-dependent variation. These were largest at the mammillary layer/membrane boundary. The palisade layer displayed a small upward trend in size of scattering object. Parallel scans showed that the textural variations observed within the palisade layer are significant and indicate local subtextures. In addition, many of the patterns exhibit diffuse scattering streaks that could result from reflectivity from the larger crystallite interfaces. Changes in the orientation of diffuse streaks were observed within the different layers, the membranes, mammillary layer, palisade layer, vertical crystal layer and cuticle, indicating certain preferred orientations of the crystallites within the layers. The nanotextural variations that are apparent could have implications at the macroscopic level of the resulting eggshell

    Effect of broodstock holding environment on egg quality in farmed brown trout (Salmo trutta)

    Brown trout (Salmo trutta) broodstock from a single population were separated prior to spawning and exposed to two different holding environments: a ‘raceway system’ and a ‘tank system’. Eggs were stripped from females and 13 measures of egg quality were collected, analysed individually, combined by principle components analysis into an integrated egg quality score which was validated against egg survival. The multivariate egg quality score (PC1) differed for fish held in the tank and raceway systems. Egg survival, chorion breaking strength and chorion Se concentrations were higher in eggs produced by broodstock held in the tank system compared to those in the raceway system. In contrast, chorion concentrations of P and K were higher in eggs from fish held in the raceway system. The results suggest that brown trout broodstock reared in tank systems produced higher quality eggs compared to trout reared in raceways. Finally, this study also indicates that multivariate statistical analysis can be used to determine egg quality from multiple egg parameters

    Killing spectroscopy of closed timelike curves

    We analyse the existence of closed timelike curves in spacetimes which possess an isometry. In particular we check which discrete quotients of such spaces lead to closed timelike curves. As a by-product of our analysis, we prove that the notion of existence or non-existence of closed timelike curves is a T-duality invariant notion, whenever the direction along which we apply such transformations is everywhere spacelike. Our formalism is straightforwardly applied to supersymmetric theories.     Effectiveness of pictorial health warning on cigarette packages: A cross-sectional study in Sarawak, Malaysia

Thus, a study was conducted to assess the perception of pictorial health warnings (PHWs) against smoking among the adult rural population of Sarawak. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from 10 villages in Kota Samarahan and Kuching Division by face to face interview using modified Global Adult Tobacco Survey questionnaire. Nonprobability sampling method was adopted to select the villages. All the households of the selected villages were visited and an adult member was selected randomly from each house irrespective of the sex. After missing value imputation, 1000 data were analysed using statistical software IBM SPSS 20.0 version. Results: Analysis showed that 28.8% of the respondents were current smokers, 7.8% were past smokers and the rest were non-smokers. Six items of pictorial health warnings were evaluated with five point Likert’s scales for attractiveness, fearfulness and adequacy of the information. Analysis revealed that the majority of the respondents had perceived awareness on PHWs, but the smokers believed that this was not adequate to make them quit smoking. Only one-fifth (19.7%) of them reported that current pictorial health warnings were sufficient to motivate people to quit smoking. Conclusion: Though the PHWs on cigarette packages are appealing, it is not sufficient as a reason to stop smoking. Thus, an approach using an integrated anti-tobacco public health programme should be focused into the specific targeted community

    The causal relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular events has been well established. In people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, LDL-C lowering with statins is strongly endorsed by clinical practice guidelines, with suggested LDL-C target levels including <100 mg/dL for high-risk patients, <70 mg/dL for very high-risk patients, and ≤55 mg/dL in patients with cardiovascular disease at extreme risk.2 Because LDL-C is a dominant pathophysiological mechanism of atherogenesis, questions pertain to whether newer antiatherosclerotic and cardiovascular protective therapies exhibit efficacy, even in the setting of low LDL-C.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.
