A Refined QSO Selection Method Using Diagnostics Tests: 663 QSO Candidates in the LMC
We present 663 QSO candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) selected
using multiple diagnostics. We started with a set of 2,566 QSO candidates from
our previous work selected using time variability of the MACHO LMC lightcurves.
We then obtained additional information for the candidates by crossmatching
them with the Spitzer SAGE, the MACHO UBVI, the 2MASS, the Chandra and the XMM
catalogs. Using this information, we specified six diagnostic features based on
mid-IR colors, photometric redshifts using SED template fitting, and X-ray
luminosities in order to further discriminate high confidence QSO candidates in
the absence of spectra information. We then trained a one-class SVM (Support
Vector Machine) model using the diagnostics features of the confirmed 58 MACHO
QSOs. We applied the trained model to the original candidates and finally
selected 663 high confidence QSO candidates. Furthermore, we crossmatched these
663 QSO candidates with the newly confirmed 144 QSOs and 275 non-QSOs in the
LMC fields. On the basis of the counterpart analysis, we found that the false

Sources and Distributions of Dark Matter
In the first section, I will try to convey a sense of the variety of
observational inputs that tell us about the existence and the spatial
distribution of dark matter in the universe. In the second section, I will
briefly review the four main dark matter candidates, taking note of each
candidate's status in the world of particle physics, its production in the
early universe, its effect upon large scale structure formation and the means
by which it may be detected. Section 3 concerns the energy spectrum of (cold)
dark matter particles on earth as may be observed some day in a direct
detection experiment. It is a brief account of work done in collaboration with

An infant‐led approach to complementary feeding is positively associated with language development
The timing and strategy with which parents first introduce their infants to solid foods may be an important predictor of subsequent developmental outcomes. Recent years have seen a decline in the prevalence of traditional parent‐led feeding of soft, puréed food and a rise in the prevalence of infant‐led complementary feeding. Although there has been some research espousing the benefits of infant‐led complementary feeding for improving food fussiness and self‐regulation, there has been little exploration of this approach that may impact on other developmental outcomes in children. The current study explores whether aspects of the infant‐led approach, specifically the child eating unaided and consuming finger foods and eating with the family, are related to child language outcomes. One hundred thirty one parents of children aged 8–24 months completed questionnaires about their approach to complementary feeding, their current feeding practices, their child's experiences with family foods and child language comprehension/production. The findings suggest that an approach to complementary feeding which promotes infant autonomy in feeding (i.e., eating finger foods rather than puréed foods) and consuming more family foods is related to more advanced child language production and comprehension. Specifically, the prevalence of eating family foods mediated the relationship between eating unaided at the onset of the complementary feeding period and later language outcomes. This study is the first to find a significant relationship between different approaches to introducing solid foods and child language outcomes and these findings highlight the potential for different complementary feeding approaches to influence behaviour beyond mealtimes
Transcriptomic response of the red tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, to nitrogen and phosphorus depletion and addition
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The role of coastal nutrient sources in the persistence of <it>Karenia brevis </it>red tides in coastal waters of Florida is a contentious issue that warrants investigation into the regulation of nutrient responses in this dinoflagellate. In other phytoplankton studied, nutrient status is reflected by the expression levels of N- and P-responsive gene transcripts. In dinoflagellates, however, many processes are regulated post-transcriptionally. All nuclear encoded gene transcripts studied to date possess a 5' <it>trans</it>-spliced leader (SL) sequence suggestive, based on the trypanosome model, of post-transcriptional regulation. The current study therefore sought to determine if the transcriptome of <it>K. brevis </it>is responsive to nitrogen and phosphorus and is informative of nutrient status.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Microarray analysis of N-depleted <it>K. brevis </it>cultures revealed an increase in the expression of transcripts involved in N-assimilation (nitrate and ammonium transporters, glutamine synthetases) relative to nutrient replete cells. In contrast, a transcriptional signal of P-starvation was not apparent despite evidence of P-starvation based on their rapid growth response to P-addition. To study transcriptome responses to nutrient addition, the limiting nutrient was added to depleted cells and changes in global gene expression were assessed over the first 48 hours following nutrient addition. Both N- and P-addition resulted in significant changes in approximately 4% of genes on the microarray, using a significance cutoff of 1.7-fold and p ≤ 10<sup>-4</sup>. By far, the earliest responding genes were dominated in both nutrient treatments by pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins, which increased in expression up to 3-fold by 1 h following nutrient addition. PPR proteins are nuclear encoded proteins involved in chloroplast and mitochondria RNA processing. Correspondingly, other functions enriched in response to both nutrients were photosystem and ribosomal genes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Microarray analysis provided transcriptomic evidence for N- but not P-limitation in <it>K. brevis</it>. Transcriptomic responses to the addition of either N or P suggest a concerted program leading to the reactivation of chloroplast functions. Even the earliest responding PPR protein transcripts possess a 5' SL sequence that suggests post-transcriptional control. Given the current state of knowledge of dinoflagellate gene regulation, it is currently unclear how these rapid changes in such transcript levels are achieved.</p
Big Bang nucleosynthesis and physics beyond the Standard Model
The Hubble expansion of galaxies, the 2.73\dK blackbody radiation
background and the cosmic abundances of the light elements argue for a hot,
dense origin of the universe --- the standard Big Bang cosmology --- and enable
its evolution to be traced back fairly reliably to the nucleosynthesis era when
the temperature was of \Or(1) MeV corresponding to an expansion age of
\Or(1) sec. All particles, known and hypothetical, would have been created at
higher temperatures in the early universe and analyses of their possible
effects on the abundances of the synthesized elements enable many interesting
constraints to be obtained on particle properties. These arguments have
usefully complemented laboratory experiments in guiding attempts to extend
physics beyond the Standard SU(3)_{\c}{\otimes}SU(2)_{\L}{\otimes}U(1)_{Y}
Model, incorporating ideas such as supersymmetry, compositeness and
unification. We first present a pedagogical account of relativistic cosmology
and primordial nucleosynthesis, discussing both theoretical and observational
aspects, and then proceed to examine such constraints in detail, in particular
those pertaining to new massless particles and massive unstable particles.
Finally, in a section aimed at particle physicists, we illustrate applications

Planck 2015 results. XIII. Cosmological parameters
We present results based on full-mission Planck observations of temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB. These data are consistent with the six-parameter inflationary LCDM cosmology. From the Planck temperature and lensing data, for this cosmology we find a Hubble constant, H0= (67.8 +/- 0.9) km/s/Mpc, a matter density parameter Omega_m = 0.308 +/- 0.012 and a scalar spectral index with n_s = 0.968 +/- 0.006. (We quote 68% errors on measured parameters and 95% limits on other parameters.) Combined with Planck temperature and lensing data, Planck LFI polarization measurements lead to a reionization optical depth of tau = 0.066 +/- 0.016. Combining Planck with other astrophysical data we find N_ eff = 3.15 +/- 0.23 for the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom and the sum of neutrino masses is constrained to < 0.23 eV. Spatial curvature is found to be |Omega_K| < 0.005. For LCDM we find a limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r <0.11 consistent with the B-mode constraints from an analysis of BICEP2, Keck Array, and Planck (BKP) data. Adding the BKP data leads to a tighter constraint of r < 0.09. We find no evidence for isocurvature perturbations or cosmic defects. The equation of state of dark energy is constrained to w = -1.006 +/- 0.045. Standard big bang nucleosynthesis predictions for the Planck LCDM cosmology are in excellent agreement with observations. We investigate annihilating dark matter and deviations from standard recombination, finding no evidence for new physics. The Planck results for base LCDM are in agreement with BAO data and with the JLA SNe sample. However the amplitude of the fluctuations is found to be higher than inferred from rich cluster counts and weak gravitational lensing. Apart from these tensions, the base LCDM cosmology provides an excellent description of the Planck CMB observations and many other astrophysical data sets
Planck 2015 results. XIV. Dark energy and modified gravity
We study the implications of Planck data for models of dark energy (DE) and modified gravity (MG), beyond the cosmological constant scenario. We start with cases where the DE only directly affects the background evolution, considering Taylor expansions of the equation of state, principal component analysis and parameterizations related to the potential of a minimally coupled DE scalar field. When estimating the density of DE at early times, we significantly improve present constraints. We then move to general parameterizations of the DE or MG perturbations that encompass both effective field theories and the phenomenology of gravitational potentials in MG models. Lastly, we test a range of specific models, such as k-essence, f(R) theories and coupled DE. In addition to the latest Planck data, for our main analyses we use baryonic acoustic oscillations, type-Ia supernovae and local measurements of the Hubble constant. We further show the impact of measurements of the cosmological perturbations, such as redshift-space distortions and weak gravitational lensing. These additional probes are important tools for testing MG models and for breaking degeneracies that are still present in the combination of Planck and background data sets. All results that include only background parameterizations are in agreement with LCDM. When testing models that also change perturbations (even when the background is fixed to LCDM), some tensions appear in a few scenarios: the maximum one found is \sim 2 sigma for Planck TT+lowP when parameterizing observables related to the gravitational potentials with a chosen time dependence; the tension increases to at most 3 sigma when external data sets are included. It however disappears when including CMB lensing
Adding 6 months of androgen deprivation therapy to postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer: a comparison of short-course versus no androgen deprivation therapy in the RADICALS-HD randomised controlled trial
Background
Previous evidence indicates that adjuvant, short-course androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) improves metastasis-free survival when given with primary radiotherapy for intermediate-risk and high-risk localised prostate cancer. However, the value of ADT with postoperative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy is unclear.
Methods
RADICALS-HD was an international randomised controlled trial to test the efficacy of ADT used in combination with postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Key eligibility criteria were indication for radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, prostate-specific antigen less than 5 ng/mL, absence of metastatic disease, and written consent. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to radiotherapy alone (no ADT) or radiotherapy with 6 months of ADT (short-course ADT), using monthly subcutaneous gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue injections, daily oral bicalutamide monotherapy 150 mg, or monthly subcutaneous degarelix. Randomisation was done centrally through minimisation with a random element, stratified by Gleason score, positive margins, radiotherapy timing, planned radiotherapy schedule, and planned type of ADT, in a computerised system. The allocated treatment was not masked. The primary outcome measure was metastasis-free survival, defined as distant metastasis arising from prostate cancer or death from any cause. Standard survival analysis methods were used, accounting for randomisation stratification factors. The trial had 80% power with two-sided α of 5% to detect an absolute increase in 10-year metastasis-free survival from 80% to 86% (hazard ratio [HR] 0·67). Analyses followed the intention-to-treat principle. The trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN40814031, and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00541047.
Findings
Between Nov 22, 2007, and June 29, 2015, 1480 patients (median age 66 years [IQR 61–69]) were randomly assigned to receive no ADT (n=737) or short-course ADT (n=743) in addition to postoperative radiotherapy at 121 centres in Canada, Denmark, Ireland, and the UK. With a median follow-up of 9·0 years (IQR 7·1–10·1), metastasis-free survival events were reported for 268 participants (142 in the no ADT group and 126 in the short-course ADT group; HR 0·886 [95% CI 0·688–1·140], p=0·35). 10-year metastasis-free survival was 79·2% (95% CI 75·4–82·5) in the no ADT group and 80·4% (76·6–83·6) in the short-course ADT group. Toxicity of grade 3 or higher was reported for 121 (17%) of 737 participants in the no ADT group and 100 (14%) of 743 in the short-course ADT group (p=0·15), with no treatment-related deaths.
Interpretation
Metastatic disease is uncommon following postoperative bed radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy. Adding 6 months of ADT to this radiotherapy did not improve metastasis-free survival compared with no ADT. These findings do not support the use of short-course ADT with postoperative radiotherapy in this patient population
Duration of androgen deprivation therapy with postoperative radiotherapy for prostate cancer: a comparison of long-course versus short-course androgen deprivation therapy in the RADICALS-HD randomised trial
Background
Previous evidence supports androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with primary radiotherapy as initial treatment for intermediate-risk and high-risk localised prostate cancer. However, the use and optimal duration of ADT with postoperative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy remains uncertain.
Methods

Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to add 6 months of ADT (short-course ADT) or 24 months of ADT (long-course ADT) to radiotherapy, using subcutaneous gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue (monthly in the short-course ADT group and 3-monthly in the long-course ADT group), daily oral bicalutamide monotherapy 150 mg, or monthly subcutaneous degarelix. Randomisation was done centrally through minimisation with a random element, stratified by Gleason score, positive margins, radiotherapy timing, planned radiotherapy schedule, and planned type of ADT, in a computerised system. Findings
Between Jan 30, 2008, and July 7, 2015, 1523 patients (median age 65 years, IQR 60–69) were randomly assigned to receive short-course ADT (n=761) or long-course ADT (n=762) in addition to postoperative radiotherapy at 138 centres in Canada, Denmark, Ireland, and the UK. With a median follow-up of 8·9 years (7·0–10·0), 313 metastasis-free survival events were reported overall (174 in the short-course ADT group and 139 in the long-course ADT group; HR 0·773 [95% CI 0·612–0·975]; p=0·029). 10-year metastasis-free survival was 71·9% (95% CI 67·6–75·7) in the short-course ADT group and 78·1% (74·2–81·5) in the long-course ADT group. Toxicity of grade 3 or higher was reported for 105 (14%) of 753 participants in the short-course ADT group and 142 (19%) of 757 participants in the long-course ADT group (p=0·025), with no treatment-related deaths.
Interpretation
Compared with adding 6 months of ADT, adding 24 months of ADT improved metastasis-free survival in people receiving postoperative radiotherapy. For individuals who can accept the additional duration of adverse effects, long-course ADT should be offered with postoperative radiotherapy.

Polanyi, China and the environmental impasse: unconscious retrogression and conscious advance
This thesis re-examines core concepts of Polanyian thought in order to evaluate the contemporary value of Polanyian theory. Since the 2008 financial crisis there has been an increased focus on Polanyi’s double movement and countermovement concepts to help explain the fallout of 2008. However this thesis argues a significant proportion of the contemporary Polanyian literature has mis-interpreted these core concepts leading to interpretations that undercut the explanatory potential of Polanyi’s main arguments. Through an interrogation of the countermovement and double movement concepts this thesis puts forward a new vocabulary of consciousness, which I argue can help better understand general Polanyian thought. To demonstrate the potential importance of the new vocabulary, as well as Polanyi’s contemporary value, I use this re-examination to interrogate two Chinese case-studies. The first examines what I argue is an unconscious countermovement occurring in wet markets in China as people look to the rural as a sphere of food safety from the negative effects of China’s rapid market transformation and agroindustrialization. The second case study examines what I term conscious Polanyian movements; urban residents ‘returning’ to the rural to gain refuge from the market. These movements are ‘conscious’ as they explicitly attack market ideals and call for a new political synthesis in similar ways to Polanyi. The environmental crisis is at the core of these communities’ ideology and they connect that crisis to market norms. Both these case studies illuminate the importance of the consciousness vocabulary within Polanyi’s work as well as bring out specific issues within Chinese political economy. The final chapter puts forward a contemporary interpretation of the unconsciousness/consciousness dichotomy by examining the current environmental crisis impasse. It argues that only conscious Polanyian movements, which bear responsibility for our part in mutual human relationships, are able to solve our collective climate emergency. Consciousness of this responsibility would necessitate dramatic changes in the social and economic structures of the global north. The interpretation of Polanyi’s theory in this thesis is important for scholars to use to demonstrate the explanatory potential of Polanyi’s thought in future analysis
