    Where is the History of Political Thought Going?

    After the recent publication of a couple of succinct and overarching essays covering the state of the field in the history of political thought (in the English language), Prof. Davide Cadeddu from the University of Milan expressed polemical remarks on some of their content. At the same time, he asked for comments on his own article, inviting the response several of English-speaking scholars (or scholars educated in anglophone cultural context). In response to this challenge, ten colleagues John Dunn (King’s College, University of Cambridge) Humeira Iqtidar (King’s College London) Iain Hampsher-Monk (University of Exeter) Richard Bourke (King’s College, University of Cambridge) Adrian Blau (King’s College London) Alexandra Chadwick (University of Jyväskylä) Duncan Kelly (Jesus College, University of Cambridge) David Leopold (Mansfield College, University of Oxford) Peter Burke (Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge) Richard Whatmore (University of St Andrews) answered with texts of different length and complexity.     Too-Small-To-Survive versus Too-Big-To-Fail banks: The two sides of the same coin

    In the recent crisis, the U.S. authorities bailed out numerous banks through TARP, whilst let many others to fail as going concern entities. Even though both interventions fully protect depositors, a bail out represents an implied subsidy to shareholders, which is not yet the case with closures where creditors are not subsidised. We investigate this non-uniform policy, demonstrating that size and not performance is the decision variable that endogenously determines one threshold below which banks are treated as TSTS by regulators and another one above which are considered to be TBTF. Our results suggest that regulators do not bailout the shareholders or the other uninsured creditors of a distressed bank if the bank is considered to be TSTS. Further, that the more complex a bank is the more likely is to be bailed out and, hence, to have all of its creditors protected. Banks which are perceived as being TBTF are also found to be too-complex-to-fail

    peer reviewedOutcomes following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) using an unrelated donor (UD) or a mismatched related donor (MMRD) remain unknown. We report a retrospective comparison of PTCy-based allo-HCT from a UD, non-PTCy allo-HCT from a UD, and PTCy allo-HCT from an MMRD. Inclusion criteria were adult patients with CML undergoing first allo-HCT between 2012 and 2019 from a UD with either PTCy or non-PTCy graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis or from an MMRD using PTCy. The primary endpoint was GVHD-free/relapse-free survival (GRFS). A total of 1341 patients were included (82% in the non-PTCy UD cohort). With a median follow-up of 34.9 months, the 3-year GRFS was 43% in the non-PTCy cohort, 37% in the PTCy-UD cohort, and 39% PTCy-MMRD cohort (P = .15). Multivariable analyses revealed no significant differences among the 3 cohorts in terms of overall survival (OS), progression-free survival, RI, and nonrelapse mortality. Factors independently associated with worse OS in the overall cohort were Karnofsky Performance Status 2 (HR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.15 to 2.17; P = .005). These results suggest that allo-HCT in patients with CML using either a UD or an MMRD with PTCy-based GVHD prophylaxis are feasible transplantation, platforms and that the disease stage at allo-HCT remains a major prognostic factor, highlighting the importance of closely monitoring CML patients and proposing transplantation when indicated when still in CP1

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
