Perception Analysis of Industrialized Building System (IBS) Implementation for G7 Contractors in Kuching, Sarawak

Industrialized Building System (IBS) is one of the initiatives underpinning the green construction zeitgeist. A myriad of advantages can be associated with adopting IBS in construction, including inter alia, improved construction quality and productivity, minimisation of construction waste, optimisation of construction materials on-site, enhanced environmental sustainability, and many others. In spite of these advantageous propositions, there is exist a gap in the exposure towards IBS construction methods, particularly in the city of Kuching, Sarawak, as compared to more familiar conventional methods. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify the issues and challenges experienced by contractors in their IBS endeavour as well as to propose a framework of solution. Moreover, this study investigated the impact of IBS adoption by G7 contractors registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) of Sarawak. Data of this study was collected via questionnaires distributed to the G7 contractors and subsequently analysed using descriptive and mean analysis. Results obtained from the study suggested that IBS construction method enhances the efficiency of construction for speedier completions, which recorded the highest ranking. Conversely, lowering the costs of construction through optimisation of materials registered the lowest ranking, suggesting that contractors do not necessarily perceive IBS as having a cost-saving ability. This study showed that IBS helps to improve the efficiency of the construction process. However, respondents were still uncertain that adopting IBS can reduce costs. This corresponds to the finding in which the most significant challenge perceived by the contractors was related to cost. This suggested a lack of integration between the different stakeholders, especially during the design stage, often resulting in the need for redesign works that required additional costs when IBS is to be adopted. In this regard, it was not a surprise to find that “promotions” obtained the top ranking as a solution in overcoming the IBS challenges. Hence, support from both the government and the private sector needs to be garnered and diligently promoted, so that the adoption of IBS in the Sarawak construction industry can be properly enhanced

Student Engagement: Concepts, Development and Application in Malaysian Universities

The purpose of this article is to analyse, evaluate and synthesise the concept and development of student engagement in higher education institutions so that the possibility of application in Malaysian universities can be realised. The main discussion of this article is organised into four sections. The first section focuses on the definition of engagement and on why it is important for higher education institutions. In the second, the article describes the antecedent of the concept and its evolution over the last thirty years. The third section analyses critically the function of student engagement as a proxy, means or end in research. Finally, the article highlights the necessity, limitations, and implications of adapting student engagement to the Malaysian context. Through the overview, it is proven that student engagement is a concept well developed in theory and practice. Various studies have proven the effectiveness of student engagement in serving institutional and individual development. With this understanding of the concept of student engagement, perhaps it will widen and deepen the perception of administrators, lecturers, and the general public towards the development of higher education. Subsequently, is may increase undergraduates’ level of commitment and meet the challenge of society. DOI: 10.5901/jesr.2015.v5n2p27

The theory of canonical perturbations applied to attitude dynamics and to the Earth rotation. Osculating and nonosculating Andoyer variables

The Hamiltonian theory of Earth rotation, known as the Kinoshita-Souchay theory, operates with nonosculating Andoyer elements. This situation parallels a similar phenomenon that often happens (but seldom gets noticed) in orbital dynamics, when the standard Lagrange-type or Delaunay-type planetary equations unexpectedly render nonosculating orbital elements. In orbital mechanics, osculation loss happens when a velocity-dependent perturbation is plugged into the standard planetary equations. In attitude mechanics, osculation is lost when an angular-velocity-dependent disturbance is plugged in the standard dynamical equations for the Andoyer elements. We encounter exactly this situation in the theory of Earth rotation, because this theory contains an angular-velocity-dependent perturbation (the switch from an inertial frame to that associated with the precessing ecliptic of date). While the osculation loss does not influence the predictions for the figure axis of the planet, it considerably alters the predictions for the instantaneous spin-axis' orientation. We explore this issue in great detail

Measurement of the Z boson differential cross section in transverse momentum and rapidity in proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV

    Get PDF
We present a measurement of the Z boson differential cross section in rapidity and transverse momentum using a data sample of pp collision events at a centre-of-mass energy s=8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The Z boson is identified via its decay to a pair of muons. The measurement provides a precision test of quantum chromodynamics over a large region of phase space. In addition, due to the small experimental uncertainties in the measurement the data has the potential to constrain the gluon parton distribution function in the kinematic regime important for Higgs boson production via gluon fusion. The results agree with the next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions computed with the fewz program. The results are also compared to the commonly used leading-order MadGraph and next-to-leading-order powheg generators. © 2015 CERN for the benefit of the CMS Collaboration

Phenomenological MSSM interpretation of CMS searches in pp collisions at √s=7 and 8 TeV

    Get PDF
Searches for new physics by the CMS collaboration are interpreted in the framework of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM). The data samples used in this study were collected at root s = 7 and 8 TeV and have integrated luminosities of 5.0 fb(-1) and 19.5 fb(-1), respectively. A global Bayesian analysis is performed, incorporating results from a broad range of CMS supersymmetry searches, as well as constraints from other experiments. Because the pMSSM incorporates several well-motivated assumptions that reduce the 120 parameters of the MSSM to just 19 parameters defined at the electroweak scale, it is possible to assess the results of the study in a relatively straightforward way. Approximately half of the model points in a potentially accessible subspace of the pMSSM are excluded, including all pMSSM model points with a gluino mass below 500 GeV, as well as models with a squark mass less than 300 GeV. Models with chargino and neutralino masses below 200 GeV are disfavored, but no mass range of model points can be ruled out based on the analyses considered. The nonexcluded regions in the pMSSM parameter space are characterized in terms of physical processes and key observables, and implications for future searches are discussed
