    Palynology of acid-saline lakes of western Australiabiostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental reconstruction

    Lakes are excellent repositories of fossils and sedimentary features that provide clues to past climatic and geologic events. Sediments from four cores drilled in Lake Aerodrome (LA1-09, LA2-09) and Lake Brown (LB1-09, LB2-09), two of the hundreds of ephemeral lakes in southern Western Australia, were analyzed for their palynological contents to understand the geologic and climatic evolution of the depositional basin. Palynofacies assemblages defined by statistical analyses of dispersed organic matter suggested differences in the depositional conditions and probable correlations between Lake Aerodrome cores. Detailed identifications and quantification of organic-walled microfossils yielded two palynomorph assemblages that reflect a climatic turnover: (1) a wet hinterland (rainforest), freshwater and swampy assemblage found in situ in the basal lignites of LA2-09 (44.58-59.63 meters); and (2) a sclerophyllic and halophilic assemblage in all younger sediments. The first and last appearances of key palynomorphs in the lignites, which contain Aglaoreidia cyclops (documented for the first time in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere), correlate the assemblage with the Middle Nothofagidites asperus Zone of the Werillup Formation. While Myrtaceidites lipsis constrains the age of the sediments from 23.38 meters depth to the top of LA2-09 as Pliocene to Recent, the sequence between 23.38 and 44.58 meters has long-ranging palynomorphs and is likely not older than the Miocene. Above the lignites, the salt-tolerant alga Dunaliella is used as a proxy for saline conditions.     Estimating global injuries morbidity and mortality : methods and data used in the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study

    Background While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria. Methods In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality for every cause of injury, and then estimating incidence for every cause of injury. Non-fatal disability for each cause is then calculated based on the probabilities of suffering from different types of bodily injury experienced. Results GBD 2017 produced morbidity and mortality estimates for 38 causes of injury. Estimates were produced in terms of incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability, cause-specific mortality, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life-years for a 28-year period for 22 age groups, 195 countries and both sexes. Conclusions GBD 2017 demonstrated a complex and sophisticated series of analytical steps using the largest known database of morbidity and mortality data on injuries. GBD 2017 results should be used to help inform injury prevention policy making and resource allocation. We also identify important avenues for improving injury burden estimation in the future.Peer reviewe

    Global injury morbidity and mortality from 1990 to 2017 : results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    Correction:Background Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries. Methods We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Findings In 1990, there were 4 260 493 (4 085 700 to 4 396 138) injury deaths, which increased to 4 484 722 (4 332 010 to 4 585 554) deaths in 2017, while age-standardised mortality decreased from 1079 (1073 to 1086) to 738 (730 to 745) per 100 000. In 1990, there were 354 064 302 (95% uncertainty interval: 338 174 876 to 371 610 802) new cases of injury globally, which increased to 520 710 288 (493 430 247 to 547 988 635) new cases in 2017. During this time, age-standardised incidence decreased non-significantly from 6824 (6534 to 7147) to 6763 (6412 to 7118) per 100 000. Between 1990 and 2017, age-standardised DALYs decreased from 4947 (4655 to 5233) per 100 000 to 3267 (3058 to 3505). Interpretation Injuries are an important cause of health loss globally, though mortality has declined between 1990 and 2017. Future research in injury burden should focus on prevention in high-burden populations, improving data collection and ensuring access to medical care.Peer reviewe

    Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial

    Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials. Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure. Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.     First fossil pollen record of the Northern Hemisphere species Aglaoreidia cyclops Erdtman, 1960 in Australia. Alcheringa 37, 1-5. ISSN 0311-5518. Aglaoreidia cyclops Erdtman, 1960 is a fossil pollen species associated with upper Eocene to lower Oligocene freshwater deposits in Europe and North America. Specimens preserved in upper Eocene lignites near Norseman, Western Australia, are the first record of this Northern Hemisphere species both in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. This new report widens the biogeographic distribution originally considered for this species. The stratigraphical and environmental characteristics of A. cyclops also make it an excellent stratigraphic indicator of upper Eocene freshwater deposits in Western Australia

    Palynomorphs in Southern Western Australian Lake Sediments: Evidence of Climate Change and Hypersalinity during the Cenozoic

    This study focuses on five cores in and around three of the hundreds of shallow ephemeral hypersaline lakes distributed in chains along traces of ancient drainages that dominate the southern Western Australian landscape. Cores within and on the shore of Lake Aerodrome (LA1-09, LA2-09), Prado Lake (PL1-09, PL2-09), and Gastropod Lake (GLE1-09) in the Cowan Paleodrainage were drilled as part of a multidisciplinary study to understand the evolution of the lakes. Lithological and palynomorph data provide insights into the region’s the depositional history, and floristic and climate evolution of the region. The nearly 60 m deep LA2-09 core provides the most comprehensive data. The basal ∼15 m interval of this core comprises two distinct lignite units with a clay interbed that preserve a rich palynomorph assemblage of the Werillup Formation. This assemblage is characterized by the first appearance datum (FAD) and last appearance datum (LAD) of key late Eocene taxa that correlate with the Middle Nothofagidies asperus Zone, and is indicative of freshwater swamp surrounded by subtropical to temperate rainforest. Above the upper lignite (except the topmost sample), evaporitic-siliciclastic units preserve a depauperate palynomorph assemblage comprising mostly long-ranging sclerophyllic-xerophilous-halophilic taxa. The pollen Myrtaceidites lipsis constrains the age of the upper ∼23 m interval as Pliocene to Recent. This younger assemblage also preserves reworked palynomorphs from the Werillup Formation and older units, and is identified in the other four cores. The presence of the halophilic green alga Dunaliella in the younger assemblage is used as a proxy for aridity and hypersaline conditions during post-Eocene deposition in southern Western Australia. Its absence in the neutral-alkaline lake water and uppermost core samples of GLE1-09 is either due to predation by the acidophobic gastropod Coxiella residing in the lake, or the fact that the type of Dunaliella preserved in the core samples is acidophilic

    Bahariya Formation and Abu Roash G Member sediments in the Razzak #7 well, North Western Desert, Egypt, contain abundant kerogen and fossil palynomorphs. In this study, we examined changes in these organic components and use them to interpret paleoenvironmental conditions and biostratigraphy. Terrestrial organic components dominate the Bahariya Formation and basal Abu Roash G Member, in particular degraded phytoclasts. Because the dinoflagellate cysts in these units are dominantly peridinioids such as Subtilisphaera, the sediments were likely deposited in nearshore, moderate to high-energy conditions. In contrast, amorphous organic matter and marine palynomorphs are more abundant in the upper part of the Abu Roash G Member, suggesting deeper depositional conditions. The overall palynomorph composition is typi- cal of the mid-Cretaceous African - South American (ASA) Microfloral Province. There is a noticeable variation in the abundance of certain palynomorph taxa such as Afropollis jardinus and trilete spores, which are fewer toward the top of the Abu Roash G Member. This variation may be a reflection of prevailing changes in the wet/dry conditions and sea level rise

    Ejs+EjsRL: an interactive tool for industrial robots simulation, Computer Vision and remote operation

    This paper presents an interactive Java software platform which enables users to easily create advanced robotic applications together with Computer Vision processing. This novel tool is composed of two layers: (1) Easy Java Simulations (EJS), an open-source tool which provides support for creating applications with a full 2D/3D interactive graphical interface, and (2) EjsRL, a high-level Java library specifically designed for EJS which provides a complete functional framework for modeling and simulation of arbitrary serial-link manipulators, Computer Vision algorithms and remote operation. The combination of both components sets up a software architecture which contains a high number of functionalities in the same platform to develop complex simulations in Robotics and Computer Vision fields. In addition, the paper shows its successful application to virtual and remote laboratories, web-based resources that enhance the accessibility of experimental setups for education and research
