Slow polymer diffusion on brush-patterned surfaces in aqueous solution
A model system for the investigation of diffusional transport in compartmentalized nanosystems is described. Arrays of âcorralsâ enclosed within poly[oligo(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA) âwallsâ were fabricated using double-exposure interferometric lithography to deprotect aminosilane films protected by a nitrophenyl group. In exposed regions, removal of the nitrophenyl group enabled attachment of an initiator for the atom-transfer radical polymerization of end-grafted POEGMA (brushes). Diffusion coefficients for poly(ethylene glycol) in these corrals were obtained by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. Two modes of surface diffusion were observed: one which is similar to diffusion on the unpatterned surface and a very slow mode of surface diffusion that becomes increasingly important as confinement increases. Diffusion within the POEGMA brushes does not significantly contribute to the results
Reproducibility of Soil Test Values Obtained by Different Field Sampling Techniques
Single-core soil samples were taken on a grid-pattern in nine fields in
southern Idaho. Soil tests for sodium bicarbonate-soluble P and K, and
DTPA-extractable Zn indicated wide variability of these elements in most
fields. Analyses of composite samples taken from the same areas by two
other persons and the single-core averages for each field agreed closely.
The single-core average values and the values obtained from composite samples,
while highly reproducible, were not reliable indicators for predicting fertilizer
needs of the fields because areas testing low within the fields were
not delineated. An initial intensive sampling, in which single-core samples
are taken on a grid pattern and analyzed separately, is needed to determine
the fertility variability of a field. Once the variability is established,
areas may be selected to monitor soil test changes with time and cropping
Methane and ammonia in the near-infrared spectra of late-T dwarfs
Analysis of T dwarfs using model atmospheres has been hampered by the absence of reliable line lists for methane and ammonia. Newly computed high-temperature line lists for both of these important molecules are now available, so it is timely to investigate the appearance of the various absorption features in T dwarfs in order to better understand their atmospheres and validate the new line lists. We present high-quality R ⌠5000 Gemini/NIFS 1.0â2.4 ÎŒm spectra of the T8 standard 2MASS 0415â0935 and the T9 standard UGPS 0722â0540. We use these spectra to identify numerous methane and ammonia features not previously seen and we discuss the implications for our understanding of T dwarf atmospheres. Among our results, we find that ammonia is the dominant opacity source between âŒ1.233â1.266 ÎŒm in UGPS 0722â0540, and we tentatively identify several absorption features in this wavelength range in the T9's spectrum which may be due entirely to ammonia opacity. Our results also suggest that water rather than methane is the dominant opacity source in the red half of the J band of the T8 dwarf. Water appears to be the main absorber in this wavelength region in the T9 dwarf until âŒ1.31 ÎŒm, when methane starts to dominate.Peer reviewe
NPARSEC : NTT Parallaxes of Southern Extremely Cool objects. Goals, targets, procedures and first results
The discovery and subsequent detailed study of T dwarfs have provided many surprises and pushed the physics and modelling of cool atmospheres in unpredicted directions. Distance is a critical parameter for studies of these objects to determine intrinsic luminosities, test binarity and measure their motion in the Galaxy. We describe a new observational programme to determine distances across the full range of T-dwarf subtypes using the New Technology Telescope (NTT)/SOFI telescope/instrument combination. We present preliminary results for ten objects, five of which represent new distances.Peer reviewe
Measuring the decoherence rate in a semiconductor charge qubit
We describe a method by which the decoherence time of a solid state qubit may
be measured. The qubit is coded in the orbital degree of freedom of a single
electron bound to a pair of donor impurities in a semiconductor host. The qubit
is manipulated by adiabatically varying an external electric field. We show
that, by measuring the total probability of a successful qubit rotation as a
function of the control field parameters, the decoherence rate may be
determined. We estimate various system parameters, including the decoherence
rates due to electromagnetic fluctuations and acoustic phonons. We find that,
for reasonable physical parameters, the experiment is possible with existing
technology. In particular, the use of adiabatic control fields implies that the
experiment can be performed with control electronics with a time resolution of

76 T dwarfs from the UKIDSS LAS : benchmarks, kinematics and an updated space density
We report the discovery of 76 new T dwarfs from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Near-infrared broad- and narrow-band photometry and spectroscopy are presented for the new objects, along with Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and warm-Spitzer photometry. Proper motions for 128 UKIDSS T dwarfs are presented from a new two epoch LAS proper motion catalogue. We use these motions to identify two new benchmark systems: LHS 6176AB, a T8p+M4 pair and HD 118865AB, a T5.5+F8 pair. Using age constraints from the primaries and evolutionary models to constrain the radii, we have estimated their physical properties from their bolometric luminosity. We compare the colours and properties of known benchmark T dwarfs to the latest model atmospheres and draw two principal conclusions. First, it appears that the H - [4.5] and J - W2 colours are more sensitive to metallicity than has previously been recognized, such that differences in metallicity may dominate over differences in T-eff when considering relative properties of cool objects using these colours. Secondly, the previously noted apparent dominance of young objects in the late-T dwarf sample is no longer apparent when using the new model grids and the expanded sample of late-T dwarfs and benchmarks. This is supported by the apparently similar distribution of late-T dwarfs and earlier type T dwarfs on reduced proper motion diagrams that we present. Finally, we present updated space densities for the late-T dwarfs, and compare our values to simulation predictions and those from WISE.Peer reviewe
Effect of Interband Transitions on the c axis Penetration Depth of Layered Superconductors
The electromagnetic response of a system with two planes per unit cell
involves, in addition to the usual intraband contribution, an added interband
term. These transitions affect the temperature dependence and the magnitude of
the zero temperature c-axis penetration depth. When the interplane hopping is
sufficiently small, the interband transitions dominate the low temperature
behaviour of the penetration depth which then does not reflect the linear
temperature dependence of the intraband term and in comparison becomes quite
flat even for a d-wave gap. It is in this regime that the pseudogap was found
in our previous normal state calculations of the c-axis conductivity, and the

Natural Orbitals and BEC in traps, a diffusion Monte Carlo analysis
We investigate the properties of hard core Bosons in harmonic traps over a
wide range of densities. Bose-Einstein condensation is formulated using the
one-body Density Matrix (OBDM) which is equally valid at low and high
densities. The OBDM is calculated using diffusion Monte Carlo methods and it is
diagonalized to obtain the "natural" single particle orbitals and their
occupation, including the condensate fraction. At low Boson density, , where and is the hard core diameter, the condensate is
localized at the center of the trap. As increases, the condensate moves
to the edges of the trap. At high density it is localized at the edges of the
trap. At the Gross-Pitaevskii theory of the condensate
describes the whole system within 1%. At corrections are
3% to the GP energy but 30% to the Bogoliubov prediction of the condensate
depletion. At , mean field theory fails. At , the Bosons behave more like a liquid He droplet than a trapped Boson

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
