Orbital Larva Masquerading as Preseptal Cellulitis
Live flies in the skin around the orbit is a rare finding. We hereby report a case of ocular calliphoid fly larvae in a 69-year-old female presented with the complaints of a bump in her left upper eyelid for 2 weeks. On examination, a scolex medial to left upper eyelid that undulated and partially emerged from skin was identified. A video accompanies this case report. The patient underwent surgical removal of live worm without complication by an oculoplastic surgeon, and the larvae was identified as Calliphorid fly larva resembling Wohlfahrtia and Lucilia species. Clinical symptoms and treatment options are discussed. This information is relevant to educating the population people regarding importance of avoiding traumatic fly inoculation when outdoors.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2019caserpt/1060/thumbnail.jp
The gravitational wave signal from the Galactic disk population of binaries containing two compact objects
We review the properties of Galactic binaries containing two compact objects,
as derived by means of population synthesis. Using this information we
calculate the gravitational wave signal of these binaries. At frequencies below
f ~< 2 mHz the double white dwarf population forms an unresolved background for
the low-frequency gravitational wave detector LISA. Above this limit some few
thousand double white dwarfs and few tens of binaries containing neutron stars
will be resolved. Of the resolved double white dwarfs ~500 have a total mass
above the Chandrasekhar limit. About ~95 of these have a measurable frequency
change allowing a determination of their chirp mass. We discuss the properties

Observational Constraints on the Angular and Spectral Distributions of Photons in Gamma-Ray Burst Sources
The typical spectra of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are discussed in the context
of the compactness problem for GRB sources and how it is resolved in the
popular fireball model. In particular, observational (model-independent)
constraints on the collimation of the gamma-rays and the dependence of the
collimation angle on the photon energy are considered. The fact that the
threshold for the creation of pairs depends on the angle between
the momenta of the annihilating photons in the GRB source provides an
alternative solution to the compactness problem. A new approach to explaining
GRBs, taking into account the angular dependence for pair creation, is
proposed, and the main features of a scenario describing a GRB source with a
total (photon) energy smaller or of the order of erg are laid out.
Thus, we are dealing with an alternative to an ultra-relativistic fireball, if
it turns out (as follows from observations) that all "long" GRBs are associated
with normal (not peculiar) core-collapse supernovae. The effects of radiation
pressure and the formation of jets as a consequence of even a small amount of
anisotropy in the total radiation field in a (compact) GRB source are examined
in this alternative model. Possible energy release mechanisms acting in regions
smaller or of the order of cm in size (a compact model for a GRB) are
discussed. New observational evidence for such compact energy release in the

The Moral Economy of Heroin in âAusterity Britainâ
This article presents the findings of an ethnographic exploration of heroin use in a disadvantaged area of the United Kingdom. Drawing on developments in continental philosophy as well as debates around the nature of social exclusion in the late-modern west, the core claim made here is that the cultural systems of exchange and mutual support which have come to underpin heroin use in this localeâthat, taken together, form a âmoral economy of heroinââneed to be understood as an exercise in reconstituting a meaningful social realm by, and specifically for, this highly marginalised group. The implications of this claim are discussed as they pertain to the fields of drug policy, addiction treatment, and critical criminological understandings of disenfranchised groups
A search for TeV gamma-ray emission from SNRs, pulsars and unidentified GeV sources in the Galactic plane in the longitude range between -2 deg and 85 deg
Using the HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, one
quarter of the Galactic plane (-2 deg < l < 85 deg) was surveyed for TeV
gamma-ray emission from point sources and moderately extended sources (diameter
<= 0.8 deg). The region covered includes 86 known pulsars (PSR), 63 known
supernova remnants (SNR) and nine GeV sources, representing a significant
fraction of the known populations. No evidence for emission of TeV gamma
radiation was detected, and upper limits range from 0.15 Crab units up to
several Crab units, depending on the observation time and zenith angles
covered. The ensemble sums over selected SNR and pulsar subsamples and over the
GeV-sources yield no indication for emission from these potential sources. The
upper limit for the SNR population is at the level of 6.7% of the Crab flux and

X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources
We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the
bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival
Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit
of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30
kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler
et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS
observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for
both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the
GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for
elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected
X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at
fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a
faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent
findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other
hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field
LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101
sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be
interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows
the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic
AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray
surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high
in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is

Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the B -> K(*) mu+ mu- Decay and First Observation of the Bs -> phi mu+ mu- Decay
We reconstruct the rare decays , , and in a data sample
corresponding to collected in collisions at
by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. Using and decays we report the branching ratios. In addition, we report
the measurement of the differential branching ratio and the muon
forward-backward asymmetry in the and decay modes, and the
longitudinal polarization in the decay mode with respect to the squared
dimuon mass. These are consistent with the theoretical prediction from the
standard model, and most recent determinations from other experiments and of
comparable accuracy. We also report the first observation of the {\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s \to
