    Mixed ab initio quantum mechanical and Monte Carlo calculations of secondary emission from SiO2 nanoclusters

    A mixed quantum mechanical and Monte Carlo method for calculating Auger spectra from nanoclusters is presented. The approach, based on a cluster method, consists of two steps. Ab initio quantum mechanical calculations are first performed to obtain accurate energy and probability distributions of the generated Auger electrons. In a second step, using the calculated line shape as electron source, the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the effect of inelastic losses on the original Auger line shape. The resulting spectrum can be directly compared to 'as-acquired' experimental spectra, thus avoiding background subtraction or deconvolution procedures. As a case study, the O K-LL spectrum from solid SiO2 is considered. Spectra computed before or after the electron has traveled through the solid, i.e., unaffected or affected by extrinsic energy losses, are compared to the pertinent experimental spectra measured within our group.     Iron Status and Analysis of Efficacy and Safety of Ferric Carboxymaltose Treatment in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

    Background and Aims:We analyzed iron deficiency and the therapeutic response following intravenous ferric carboxymaltose in a large single-center inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cohort. Methods: 250 IBD patients were retrospectively analyzed for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. A subgroup was analyzed regarding efficacy and side effects of iron supplementation with ferric carboxymaltose. Results: In the cohort (n = 250), 54.4% of the patients had serum iron levels 60 mu g/dl, 61.6% had ferritin >100 ng/ml, and 90.7% reached Hb >12/13 g/dl at follow-up (p < 0.0001 for all parameters vs. pretreatment values). The most frequent adverse event was a transient increase of liver enzymes with male gender as risk factor (p = 0.008, OR 8.62, 95% CI 1.74-41.66). Conclusions: Iron deficiency and anemia are frequent in IBD patients. Treatment with ferric carboxymaltose is efficious, safe and well tolerated in iron-deficient IBD patients. Copyright (C) 2011 S.     Chemokine receptor–targeted PET/CT provides superior diagnostic performance in newly diagnosed marginal zone lymphoma patients: a head-to-head comparison with [18F]FDG

    Background In patients with marginal zone lymphoma (MZL), [18F]FDG PET/CT provided inconsistent diagnostic accuracy. C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is overexpressed in MZL and thus, may emerge as novel theranostic target. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of CXCR4-targeting [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor when compared to [18F]FDG PET/CT in MZL. Methods Thirty-two untreated MZL patients (nodal, n = 17; extranodal, n = 13; splenic, n = 2) received [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor and [18F]FDG PET/CT within median 2 days. We performed a visual and quantitative analysis of the total lymphoma volume by measuring maximum/peak standardized uptake values (SUVmax/peak), and calculating target-to-background ratios (TBR, defined as lesion-based SUVpeak divided by SUVmean from blood pool). Visual comparisons for both radiotracers were carried out for all target lesions (TL), and quantitative analysis of concordant TL evident on both scans. Last, MZL subtype analyses were also conducted. Results On a patient-based level, [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor identified MZL manifestations in 32 (100%) subjects (vs. [18F]FDG, 25/32 [78.1%]). Of the 256 identified TL, 127/256 (49.6%) manifestations were evident only on CXCR4-directed imaging, while only 7/256 (2.7%) were identified on [18F]FDG but missed by [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor. In the remaining 122/256 (47.7%) concordant TL, [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor consistently provided increased metrics when compared to [18F]FDG: SUVmax, 10.3 (range, 2.53–37.2) vs. 5.72 (2.32–37.0); SUVpeak, 6.23 (1.58–25.7) vs. 3.87 (1.54–27.7); P < 0.01, respectively. Concordant TL TBR on [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor (median, 3.85; range, 1.05–16.0) was also approximately 1.8-fold higher relative to [18F]FDG (median, 2.08; range, 0.81–28.8; P < 0.01). Those findings on image contrast, however, were driven by nodal MZL (P < 0.01), and just missed significance for extranodal MZL (P = 0.06). Conclusions In newly diagnosed MZL patients, [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor identified more sites of disease when compared to [18F]FDG, irrespective of MZL subtype. Quantitative PET parameters including TBR were also higher on [68Ga]Ga-PentixaFor PET/CT, suggesting improved diagnostic read-out using chemokine receptor-targeted imaging

    South African HIV-1 Subtype C Transmitted Variants With A Specific V2 Motif Show Higher Dependence On aα4β7 For Replication

    Background: The integrin aα4β7 mediates the trafficking of immune cells to the gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and is an attachment factor for the HIV gp120 envelope glycoprotein. We developed a viral replication inhibition assay to more clearly evaluate the role of aα4β7 in HIV infection and the contribution of viral and host factors. Results: Replication of 60 HIV-1 subtype C viruses collected over time from 11 individuals in the CAPRISA cohort were partially inhibited by antibodies targeting aα4β7. However, dependence on aα4β7 for replication varied substantially among viral isolates from different individuals as well as over time in some individuals. Among 8 transmitted/founder (T/F) viruses, aα4β7 reactivity was highest for viruses having P/SDI/V tri-peptide binding motifs. Mutation of T/F viruses that had LDI/L motifs to P/SDI/V resulted in greater aα4β7 reactivity, whereas mutating P/SDI/V to LDI/L motifs was associated with reduced aα4β7 binding. P/SDI/V motifs were more common among South African HIV subtype C viruses (35%) compared to subtype C viruses from other regions of Africa

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at s√=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H → γγ decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp → H → γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) − 2.9 + 3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations

    Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry

    Measurement of χ c1 and χ c2 production with s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the χ c1 and χ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The χ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay χ c → J/ψγ (with J/ψ → μ + μ −) where photons are reconstructed from γ → e + e − conversions. The production rate of the χ c2 state relative to the χ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt χ c as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum. The prompt χ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/ψ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/ψ produced in feed-down from χ c decays. The fractions of χ c1 and χ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured

    Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30
