    DATA FUSION APPROACHES IN SPECTROSCOPIC CHARACTERIZATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF PDO WINE VINEGARS

    Spain is one of the major producers of high-quality wine vinegars having three protected designations of origin (a.k.a. PDOs): "Vinagre de Jerez", "Vinagre de Condado de Huelva" and "Vinagre de Montilla-Moriles". Their high prices due to their high quality and their high production costs explain the need for developing an adequate quality control technique and the interest in extensive characterization in order to capture the identity of each denomination. In this framework, methodologies based on non-targeted techniques, such as spectroscopies, are becoming popular in food authentication. Thus, for improving vinegar quality assessment, fusion of data blocks obtained from the same samples but different analytical techniques could be a good strategy, since the quantity and quality of sample knowledge could be enhanced providing new insights into the differentiation of vinegars. Therefore, the aim of this manuscript is the development of a multi-platform methodology and a model able to classify the Spanish wine vinegar PDOs. Sixty-five PDO wine vinegars were analyzed by four spectroscopic techniques: Fourier transform mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR), near infrared spectroscopy (NIR), multidimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). Two different data fusion strategies were evaluated: Mid-level data fusion with different preprocessing, and Common Component and Specific Weights analysis multiblock method. Exploratory and classification analysis on the data from individual techniques were also performed and compared with data fusion models. The data fusion models improved the classification, providing a more efficient differentiation, than the models based on single methods, and supporting the approach to combine these methods to achieve synergies for an optimized PDO differentiation

    BÚSQUEDA DE PRINCIPIOS ACTIVOS ANTIPARASITARIOS EN PLANTAS DE USO TRADICIONAL DE LA AMAZONIA PERUANA. ESPECIAL ENFASIS EN ALCALOIDES INDOLICOS

    A fin de evaluar el potencial antimalárico de remedios tradicionales utilizadas en el Perú por las poblaciones indígenas y mestizas del río Nanay en Loreto, fueron entrevistados sobre el uso medicina tradicional para el tratamiento de la malaria. La encuesta se llevó a cabo en seis pueblos y llevaron a la recolección de 59 plantas. 35 extracciones hidro-alcohólico se realizaron en las 21 plantas más citadas. A continuación se ensayaron los extractos para la actividad antiplasmodial in vitro sobre cepa resistente a la cloroquina de Plasmodium falciparum (FCR-3), y también se realizó la prueba de inhibición de ferriprotoporfirina con el fin de asumir propiedades farmacológicas. Los extractos de 9 plantas, en veintiún evaluados, mostraron una actividad antiplasmodial interesante (IC50 <10 µg/ml) y 16 extractos resultaron activos en la prueba de inhibición de la ferriprotoporfirina. Cinco alcaloides oxindólicos y dos alcaloides de tipo plumerano subtipo haplophitina, fueron aislados de plantas medicinales: Aspidosperma rigidum y A. schultesii. Uno de estos compuestos se identificó como un confórmero rotámero transoide de la 18-Oxo-O-metilaspidoalbina que no se describió anteriormente, también fueron determinada la actividad antiparasitaria de los compuestos contra Trypanosoma cruzi y Leishmania infantum

    [EN] Escape Rooms are educational resources that are being used by many educators, fostering elements of collaboration that help in social skills development. In this study, a multidisciplinary Escape Room has been developed as an educational tool in order to improve students learning and prepare them for the future of professional practice. 145 students and 12 professors belonging to 8 different areas of knowledge from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Seville participated in this activity. Through this innovation, a student-teacher feedback has been created, improving their relationship and learning from each other. The results obtained through satisfaction surveys show the great acceptance that the escape room had among the students, being the study valued with an overall score of 4.83/5. Although 93% of the students considered the activity of high/very high difficulty, 100% of them emphasize that this tool encourages teamwork and 86.9% consider that it reinforces knowledge. This study has awakened students motivation and interest in the subjects involved, strengthening learning and knowledge of the fundamental concepts acquired, and promoting teamwork and problem solving.[ES] Las Escape Rooms son un tipo de recurso que está siendo utilizado por muchos educadores, propiciando elementos de colaboración que ayudan a desarrollar habilidades sociales. En este estudio se ha desarrollado una Escape Room multidisciplinar como herramienta educativa con el fin de mejorar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes y prepararlos para el futuro de la práctica profesional. Participaron 145 alumnos y 12 profesores adscritos a 8 áreas de conocimiento distintas de la Facultad de Farmacia de la Universidad de Sevilla. Mediante esta innovación se ha producido una retroalimentación alumno-profesor, mejorando su relación y aprendiendo mutuamente. Los resultados obtenidos mediante encuestas de satisfacción muestran la gran aceptación que ha tenido la Escape Room entre los alumnos, siendo el estudio valorado con una puntuación general de 4,83/5. A pesar de que el 93% de los alumnos consideró la actividad de alta/muy alta dificultad, el 100% de los mismos destacan que esta herramienta fomenta el trabajo en equipo y el 86,9% considera que refuerza los conocimientos.     The Large Observatory for x-ray timing

    The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1° collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery.     Radiation and Dust Sensor for Mars Environmental Dynamic Analyzer Onboard M2020 Rover

    32 pags., 26 figs., 3 tabs. -- This article belongs to the Section Remote SensorsThe Radiation and Dust Sensor is one of six sensors of the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer onboard the Perseverance rover from the Mars 2020 NASA mission. Its primary goal is to characterize the airbone dust in the Mars atmosphere, inferring its concentration, shape and optical properties. Thanks to its geometry, the sensor will be capable of studying dust-lifting processes with a high temporal resolution and high spatial coverage. Thanks to its multiwavelength design, it will characterize the solar spectrum from Mars' surface. The present work describes the sensor design from the scientific and technical requirements, the qualification processes to demonstrate its endurance on Mars' surface, the calibration activities to demonstrate its performance, and its validation campaign in a representative Mars analog.     Safety and effectiveness of colistin compared with tobramycin for multi-drug resistant <it>Acinetobacter baumannii </it>infections

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Nosocomial infections due to multi-drug resistant <it>Acinetobacter baumannii </it>are often treated with colistin, but there are few data comparing its safety and efficacy with other antimicrobials.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective cohort study of patients treated with colistin or tobramycin for <it>A. baumannii </it>infections in intensive care units (ICUs) at Groote Schuur hospital. Colistin was used for <it>A. baumannii </it>isolates which were resistant to all other available antimicrobials. In the tobramycin group, 53% of the isolates were only susceptible to tobramycin and colistin. We assessed ICU mortality, nephrotoxicity and time to the first negative culture.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>32 patients, with similar admission APACHE scores and serum creatinine, were treated with each antimicrobial. There were no significant differences between the colistin and tobramycin groups in ICU mortality (p = 0.54), nephrotoxicity (p = 0.67), change in creatinine from baseline to highest subsequent value (p = 0.11) and time to microbiological clearance (p = 0.75). The hazard ratio for total in-hospital survival in patients treated with colistin compared to tobramycin was 0.43 (95% CI 0.19 to 0.99).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study suggests that colistin and tobramycin have similar risks of nephrotoxicity and are equally efficacious. Colistin is an acceptable antibiotic for the treatment of <it>A. baumanii </it>infections when the organism is resistant to other available antimicrobials.</p
