Surface Half-Metallicity of CrAs in the Zinc-Blende Structure

The development of new techniques such as the molecular beam epitaxy have enabled the growth of thin films of materials presenting novel properties. Recently it was made possible to grow a CrAs thin-film in the zinc-blende structure. In this contribution, the full-potential screened KKR method is used to study the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk CrAs in this novel phase as well as the Cr and As terminated (001) surfaces. Bulk CrAs is found to be half-ferromagnetic for all three GaAs, AlAs and InAs experimental lattice constants with a total spin magnetic moment of 3 μB\mu_B. The Cr-terminated surface retains the half-ferromagnetic character of the bulk, while in the case of the As-termination the surface states destroy the gap in the minority-spin band.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, new text, new titl

Origin and Properties of the Gap in the Half-Ferromagnetic Heusler Alloys

We study the origin of the gap and the role of chemical composition in the half-ferromagnetic Heusler alloys using the full-potential screened KKR method. In the paramagnetic phase the C1_b compounds, like NiMnSb, present a gap. Systems with 18 valence electrons, Z_t, per unit cell, like CoTiSb, are semiconductors, but when Z_t > 18 antibonding states are also populated, thus the paramagnetic phase becomes unstable and the half-ferromagnetic one is stabilized. The minority occupied bands accommodate a total of nine electrons and the total magnetic moment per unit cell in mu_B is just the difference between Z_t and 2×92 \times 9. While the substitution of the transition metal atoms may preserve the half-ferromagnetic character, substituting the spsp atom results in a practically rigid shift of the bands and the loss of half-metallicity. Finally we show that expanding or contracting the lattice parameter by 2% preserves the minority-spin gap.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures New figures, revised tex

The CDF dijet excess from intrinsic quarks

    Get PDF
The CDF collaboration reported an excess in the production of two jets in association with a WW. We discuss constraints on possible new particle state interpretations of this excess. The fact of no statistically significant deviation from the SM expectation for {ZZ+dijet} events in CDF data disfavors the new particle explanation. We show that the nucleon intrinsic strange quarks provide an important contribution to the WW boson production in association with a single top quark production. Such {WW+t} single top quark production can contribute to the CDF {WW+dijet} excess, thus the nucleon intrinsic quarks can provide a possible explanation to the CDF excess in {WW+dijet} but not in {ZZ+dijet} events.Comment: 4 latex pages, 1 figure. The effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the band gap of half-metals

    Get PDF
The spin-orbit interaction can cause a nonvanishing density of states (DOS) within the minority-spin band gap of half-metals around the Fermi level. We examine the magnitude of the effect in Heusler alloys, zinc-blende half metals and diluted magnetic semiconductors, using first-principles calculations. We find that the ratio of spin-down to spin-up DOS at the Fermi level can range from below 1% (e.g. 0.5% for NiMnSb) over several percents (4.2% for (Ga,Mn)As) to 13% for MnBi.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Assessing the adoption of high iron bean varieties and their impact on iron intakes and other livelihood outcomes in Rwanda: Listing Exercise Report

    Get PDF
An impact assessment (IA) study was conducted in Rwanda in 2015 Season B in order to establish the adoption rates of HIB varieties among rural bean producing and to generate useful information on delivery and breeding efforts by analyzing the facilitating/hindering factors to adoption and diffusion of HIB varieties. A nationally representative listing exercise preceded the main household survey for the impact assessment. The listing exercise was conducted across 120 rural villages in 29 provinces of Rwanda and was administered to a total of 19,575 households. The aims of the listing exercise were to determine the adoption rate of High Iron Beans (HIBs) and to inform second-stage sampling for the main impact assessment survey that was to follow. This report presents results from the listing exercise

First Observation of Coherent π0\pi^0 Production in Neutrino Nucleus Interactions with Eν<E_{\nu}< 2 GeV

    Get PDF
The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date of π0\pi^0s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of π0\pi^0s produced in mineral oil (CH2_2) and the first observation of coherent π0\pi^0 production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily to coherent production off carbon, but may also include a small contribution from diffractive production on hydrogen. Integrated over the MiniBooNE neutrino flux, the sum of the NC coherent and diffractive modes is found to be (19.5 ±\pm1.1 (stat) ±\pm2.5 (sys))% of all exclusive NC π0\pi^0 production at MiniBooNE. These measurements are of immediate utility because they quantify an important background to MiniBooNE's search for νμνe\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_e oscillations.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    Get PDF
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter
