    WOM Or eWOM, Is There A Difference?: An Extension of the Social Communication Theory to Consumer Purchase Related Attitudes

    While traditional word of mouth (WOM) and electronic word of mouth (eWOM) have both been shown to highly impact consumer behavior, there is a deficit in our knowledge of how they compare to one another. My dissertation research addresses the lack of empirical studies that compare WOM promotion in the form of face-to-face interaction to eWOM promotion in the form of computer-mediated communication, especially using Web 2.0 technologies. This research tests the assumption that WOM is superior to eWOM and, if so, how to extend eWOM to improve its performance against WOM. Essay One introduces a proposed conceptual framework to differentiate WOM and eWOM based on Social Communication Theory. The overall conceptual model was derived from a qualitative research study that was used to explore and define the concepts, media types, and application of WOM and eWOM using a diverse panel of consumers. Essay Two describes an experiment that was conducted to empirically test whether WOM impacts important marketing outcomes differently than eWOM using an ecologically valid research procedure. Essay Two further explores mediation using social communication elements as the underlying explanatory mechanism for the relative impact of WOM and eWOM on consumers’ attitude toward a message, attitude toward a product, and purchase intention. The results revealed that WOM has a significantly higher impact than eWOM on consumer purchase-related attitudes. The posited social communication framework did mediate or explain the relative difference between WOM and eWOM on the outcomes variables. Essay Three investigates the robustness of the findings through a set of replication studies that test the effects across small and large sample sizes and across different methods of analysis. The results indicated that WOM showed a significant and consistently higher impact than eWOM across both replication studies. The third essay also examines factors that were influential in closing the relative gap between WOM and eWOM by introducing a third concept based on the Hyperpersonal Model of Communication Theory. This research is important as it seeks to understand how consumers communicate in this digital age and why there is an evolution of the sharing of product information that leads to key managerial, theoretical, and methodological implications

    Numerous concerns have been raised about the sustainability of the biomedical research enterprise in the United States. Improving the postdoctoral training experience is seen as a priority in addressing these concerns, but even identifying who the postdocs are is made difficult by the multitude of different job titles they can carry. Here, we summarize the detrimental effects that current employment structures have on training, compensation and benefits for postdocs, and argue that academic research institutions should standardize the categorization and treatment of postdocs. We also present brief case studies of two institutions that have addressed these challenges and can provide models for other institutions attempting to enhance their postdoctoral workforces and improve the sustainability of the biomedical research enterprise

Drawing upon research conducted in the UK with children and their families, this paper contributes to existing debates in the geographies of care by exploring a relatively new space of caring, namely the escort of primary school children to and from school and other settings. The paper explores mothers’ and fathers’ involvement in escorting children, the extent and nature of participation and also how distinct gendered forms of caring practices are established. In doing so, the paper also considers the importance of place and local cultures of parenting which inform these gendered carescapes

    Diffuse Hard X-ray Emission in Starburst Galaxies as Synchrotron from Very High Energy Electrons

    [Abdriged] The origin of the diffuse hard X-ray (2 - 10 keV) emission from starburst galaxies is a long-standing problem. We suggest that synchrotron emission of 10 - 100 TeV electrons and positrons (e+/-) can contribute to this emission, because starbursts have strong magnetic fields. We consider three sources of e+/- at these energies: (1) primary electrons directly accelerated by supernova remnants; (2) pionic secondary e+/- created by inelastic collisions between CR protons and gas nuclei in the dense ISMs of starbursts; (3) pair e+/- produced between the interactions between 10 - 100 TeV gamma-rays and the intense far-infrared (FIR) radiation fields of starbursts. We create one-zone steady-state models of the CR population in the Galactic Center (R <= 112 pc), NGC 253, M82, and Arp 220's nuclei, assuming a power law injection spectrum for electrons and protons. We compare these models to extant radio and GeV and TeV gamma-ray data for these starbursts, and calculate the diffuse synchrotron X-ray and Inverse Compton (IC) luminosities of these starbursts. If the primary electron spectrum extends to ~PeV energies and has a proton/electron injection ratio similar to the Galactic value, we find that synchrotron contributes 2 - 20% of their unresolved, diffuse hard X-ray emission. Inverse Compton emission is likewise a minority of the unresolved X-ray emission in these starbursts, from 0.1% in the Galactic Center to 10% in Arp 220's nuclei. We also model generic starbursts, including submillimeter galaxies, in the context of the FIR--X-ray relation, finding that up to 2% in the densest starbursts with our fiducial assumptions. Neutrino and TeV gamma-ray data can further constrain the synchrotron X-ray emission of starbursts. Our models do not constrain hard synchrotron X-ray emission from any additional hard components of primary e+/- from sources like pulsars in starbursts.Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 31 pages, emulateapj forma

    Sustainability program brands: Platforms for collaboration and co-creation

    While CSR and Sustainability have been widely debated topics over the past decades, there is still evidence of unethical practices by businesses, as witnessed through corporate scandals across a number of industry sectors. This highlights the need for firms to collaborate to actively prevent malpractices and instead find ways to improve standards along the whole value chain. With the increased pressure from various stakeholders, calling for firms to address these issues in a collaborative and holistic manner, the development of models facilitating collaboration is vital. Taking a communication perspective, this paper seeks to improve the knowledge on how organisations can manage diverse stakeholders to improve value chain collaboration towards more sustainable practices. Based on a multiple case study methodology, involving in-depth interviews with senior directors in the food and drink value chain, a framework is developed, depicting the value of a branded sustainability program as a useful platform for stimulating collaboration and co-creation from diverse and/or competing stakeholders. The framework builds on, and contributes to several literature strands including CSR/Sustainability communication, Coopetition and Branding

    Development of AMSTAR: a measurement tool to assess the methodological quality of systematic reviews

    BACKGROUND: Our objective was to develop an instrument to assess the methodological quality of systematic reviews, building upon previous tools, empirical evidence and expert consensus. METHODS: A 37-item assessment tool was formed by combining 1) the enhanced Overview Quality Assessment Questionnaire (OQAQ), 2) a checklist created by Sacks, and 3) three additional items recently judged to be of methodological importance. This tool was applied to 99 paper-based and 52 electronic systematic reviews. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify underlying components. The results were considered by methodological experts using a nominal group technique aimed at item reduction and design of an assessment tool with face and content validity. RESULTS: The factor analysis identified 11 components. From each component, one item was selected by the nominal group. The resulting instrument was judged to have face and content validity. CONCLUSION: A measurement tool for the 'assessment of multiple systematic reviews' (AMSTAR) was developed. The tool consists of 11 items and has good face and content validity for measuring the methodological quality of systematic reviews. Additional studies are needed with a focus on the reproducibility and construct validity of AMSTAR, before strong recommendations can be made on its use

    Multiscale computational analysis of the bioelectric consequences of myocardial ischaemia and infarction

    [EN] Ischaemic heart disease is considered as the single most frequent cause of death, provoking more than 7 000 000 deaths every year worldwide. A high percentage of patients experience sudden cardiac death, caused in most cases by tachyarrhythmic mechanisms associated to myocardial ischaemia and infarction. These diseases are difficult to study using solely experimental means due to their complex dynamics and unstable nature. In the past decades, integrative computational simulation techniques have become a powerful tool to complement experimental and clinical research when trying to elucidate the intimate mechanisms of ischaemic electrophysiological processes and to aid the clinician in the improvement and optimization of therapeutic procedures.
