The Theoretical Rationale for a Framework for Appraising The Profitability Potential of a Business Model Innovation

Because of the uncertainty associated with innovation, it is difficult to assess the profitability potential of business model innovations. However, since theory predicts and explains, and assessing the profitability potential of a business model is about predicting what its profitability will be in the future, we can use strategy theories to help with the assessment. Therefore, I draw on three strategic management theories—the resource-based view, the product-market position view, and the dynamic capabilities perspective to derive a framework for assessing the profitability potential of a business model innovation. I then illustrate how the framework could work by applying it to Quirky's crowdsourcing business model innovation.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/100189/1/1205_AAfuah.pd

    Forgotten Scientific Miracles

Why do we in the US spend more money on healthcare than anyone else in the world but keep getting sicker, fatter, and more susceptible to healthcare shocks such as the covid-19 pandemic than anyone else? What is the solution to this problem? In this paper, I argue that three causation-correlation errors that we made in the vetting and gatekeeping of scientific research findings—as the findings flowed down the healthcare hierarchy from scientists to doctors and their patients—landed us in the healthcare quagmire. By leveraging the wisdom and power of crowds, we can use three strategies–– low-carb, high-dose micronutrients, and cause-based treatments strategies––to obtain superior solutions to the problem at little or no cost. These strategies are disruptive to the business models of the status quo healthcare players who have presided over the quagmire and profited from it. Resistance from these status quo healthcare players can be expected.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/156062/1/1399_Afuah.pd

Responding to Structural Industry Changes: A Technological Evolution Perspective

    Get PDF
We argue that the search for a dynamic theory of strategy and for a link between the product-market and resource-based views may be incomplete without an exploration of the evolution of the technology that underlies products and heterogeneous firm capability. As technology evolves, so do industry characteristics, products, and critical success factors. Firms without the right capabilities are forced to exit. Thus an industry's structure, attractiveness and the kinds of capabilities that it needs to succeed, may vary over time suggesting different strategies for each phase

Misunderstanding in communicating often occur in everyday conversation or in dialogue within the film. In order for social relationships to fall apart, a strategy to apologize for deliberate or unintentional errors is necessary. This researcher aims to analyze the apology strategy used by the characters and related the apology strategy with the principle of politeness in a conversation in the Frozen movie. The reason why the researcher chooses the apology utterance is because the apology utterance is the most common kind of speech act always used in everyday expressions. The researcher focus on analyzing apology strategies that are then related them to the principle of politeness. This movie is chosen because there are many apology utterances that are spoken in different situations and reasons. Therefore, the discussion of this study takes two problems, namely: discussing how the apology strategies are used in Frozen movie and how the characters use these apology strategies in relation with the principle of politeness. This apology strategy research is categorized based on Cohen and Olshtain's later theories on Leech's theory of politeness. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method. As a result of this study, there are three apology strategies that researcher used in this movie, namely in the strategy an expression of apology, the explanation or account the situation and the last is in the strategy an acknowledgment of responsibility. In addition, this apology strategy research is associated with the principle of politeness, those are the tact maxim, the generosity maxim and the last is the sympathy maxim. Keyword : Apology, apology strategies, speech act, principle of politenes

Profiting from innovations: the role of new game strategies in the case of Lipitor of the US pharmaceutical industry

In exploring why innovators often do not profit from their innovations, researchers concentrate on innovators versus imitators and the extent to which owners of complementary assets capture profits from innovations. The literature provides scant attention to factors that sap profits from innovations. This paper argues that an innovator's positioning vis-Ă -vis customers, suppliers, complementors, and other co-opetitors plays a critical role in the innovator's profitability. The article explores how an innovator can use new game strategies to better positioning, thus capturing rents from innovations and enabling further innovations in the future. The study examines the case of Lipitor, one of the world's best-selling drug, to illustrate how positioning can play in a firm's ability to profit from its innovations.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79168/1/j.1467-9310.2010.00597.x.pd
