Post-Keynesian Theory of Business Enterprise and the Veblenian´s Approach: Are there commonalities?

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to explore the possible common grounds, divergences and complementarities between the Veblenian’s approach on the Theory of Business Enterprise followed by Institutional economists, and the modern Post Keynesian Micro theory on Business enterprise. Due to the dispersion and lack of systematization of Institutional Economics regarding this body of theory, compared with the Post-Keynesian theory of the firm, the main efforts of this paper will be dedicated to a short survey of the Institutional approach. In the second section of the paper I review the basic ideas presented in Veblen’s main contributions on this area regarding business enterprises (industrial process, main principles, role of credit, ownership structure, the legal framework, the price behavior and the cultural incidences). Then, I make a comparison with the main theoretical results that modern postkeynesian vision has developed regarding structure of production, costing, pricing, investment, and competition and market governance . I claim that even though there are commonalities and some minor divergences between the two approaches, complementarities among them are more relevant, although the main areas of research have been somewhat different. I end with some conclusions that underline possible areas of cooperation between these two schools of economic thought within the heterodox paradigm.Theory of the Firm, Postkeynesian Economics, Institutional Economics.

Numerically efficient algorithm for model development of high-order systems

A technique for estimating transfer functions in partial fraction expansion form from frequency response data for a high-order system is presented. The problem formulation avoids many of the numerical difficulties associated with high-order polynomials and has the advantage of having the option to fix the camping and frequency of a mode, if known, during the estimation process. The resulting transfer function(s) may be converted to Jordan-Form time domain equations directly. During the implementation of this technique, a frequency and amplitude normalizing window was developed that maximized the efficiency of the optimization algorithm. The combination of estimating the transfer function in factored form, the ability to fix preciously determined parameters and the effectiveness of the normalizing window led to a progressive approach to synthesizing transfer functions from frequency response data for high-order systems

The role of kinetics in the design of plasma microreactors

Miniaturization of plasma reactors has the potential of low power operation. In general, the electric field strength in the gap between two electrodes increases proportionate to inverse of the gap width, so that it is possible to overcome the first ionization potential of the gas with a low voltage. However, plasmas are extinguished primarily by recombination at the walls. Wall collisions are enhanced by the greater surface area to volume ratio in micro channels, which also increases proportionate to the inverse of the gap width. If the plasma were well mixed, then the plasma creation in the bulk would be balanced by extinction at the wall, providing no particular advantage with regard to low voltage/low power operation. However, the plasma is transferred from the bulk to the wall by ambipolar diffusion. If the operation of the plasma microreactor is essentially transient or batch, whether or not the reaction kinetics are comparable to or faster than ambipolar diffusion determines if there is a regime of operation in which a low voltage plasma discharge can generate a high yield of product. In this paper, this question is investigated with regards to the ozone formation reaction and a particular design of a micro channel plasma reactor, with parameters so chosen to arguably achieve low voltage operation. The focus of this paper is the simulation of the kinetics of the plasma reactions leading to ozone formation, which shows a time to completion that is comparable (10(-2) s) or faster than the estimate of ambipolar diffusion time at these length scales. Preliminary results of a microchip reactor are consistent with this prediction. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

A new meta-module for efficient reconfiguration of hinged-units modular robots

    Get PDF
We present a robust and compact meta-module for edge-hinged modular robot units such as M-TRAN, SuperBot, SMORES, UBot, PolyBot and CKBot, as well as for central-point-hinged ones such as Molecubes and Roombots. Thanks to the rotational degrees of freedom of these units, the novel meta-module is able to expand and contract, as to double/halve its length in each dimension. Moreover, for a large class of edge-hinged robots the proposed meta-module also performs the scrunch/relax and transfer operations required by any tunneling-based reconfiguration strategy, such as those designed for Crystalline and Telecube robots. These results make it possible to apply efficient geometric reconfiguration algorithms to this type of robots. We prove the size of this new meta-module to be optimal. Its robustness and performance substantially improve over previous results.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
