    Coincident Port-site and Functional End-to-end Anastomotic Recurrences after Laparoscopic Surgery for Colon Cancer : A case report and literature review

    Herein, we report coincident recurrences at the port site and functional end-to-end anastomosis after laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for cancer of the ascending colon. The patient was an 83-year-old man who had undergone the aforementioned procedure (Stage IIA) in the referral hospital. At the 10-month follow-up, computed tomography showed two tumours around 3 cm in diameter : one on the right-flank abdominal wall-the surgical port-site-and the other at the functional end-to-end anastomosis. Likewise, a positron emission tomography scan was positive for two tumours. Endoscopic examination showed an ulcerated tumour with a clear margin, and a biopsy confirmed moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. The patient was diagnosed with coincident recurrences at the port site and functional end-to-end anastomosis after laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for cancer of the ascending colon. We re-operated inMarch 2016. The tumours at the functional end-to-end anastomosisand functional end-to-end anastomosiswere resected. After 7 months, no recurrence was detected

    Peritoneal cecal cancer metastasis to a mesh-plug prosthesis : A case report

    We report the case of a 77-year-old man who presented to our hospital with cecal cancer, lung metastasis, and liver metastasis in January 2013. After four courses of modified infusional intravenous fluorouracil and levofolinate with oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX 6) + bevacizumab, there was no new metastatic lesion and lung metastasis reduction was observed. Ileocecal resection was performed in May, left lower lung lobectomy in August, and extended right posterior segmentectomy + S8 partial liver resection was performed in December. The tumor marker declined initially ; thereafter, it gradually increased. Computed tomography (CT) performed in April 2014 revealed right inguinal mass around the mesh-plug prosthesis. A positron emission tomography-CT (PET-CT) also revealed a high 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake at the same site. Right inguinal tumor resection was performed in July. Cancer tissues were confirmed by performing intraoperative rapid pathological diagnosis, and R0 resection could be achieved. Previous studies have reported malignant tumor metastases to the mesh-plug prosthesis, and this was believed to one of the sites that cancer cells can easily engraft. In particular, in patients with a history of advanced malignant tumors, if mass formation around the artifact insertion site is observed, the possibility of peritoneal metastasis should be considered

    Combined resection of re-recurrent lateral lymph nodes and external iliac vein : Case Report and Literature

    Herein, we describe the operative procedure for combined resection of re-recurrent lateral lymph nodes and the external iliac vein. There is no consensus on the clinical implications of resection of locally re-recurrent colorectal tumors, as the operative procedure is extremely difficult. We present the case of a 52- year-old woman who underwent abdominoperineal resection. About one year later, we excised a recurrent lymph node in the left lateral obturator area through an extraperitoneal approach. About 18 months later, lymph node re-recurrence in the left external iliac area was observed. Re-recurrent lymph nodes directly invade the left external iliac vein.We removed the re-recurrent lymph node with combined, radical segmental resection of the left external iliac vein, left obturator artery and vein, and left obturator nerve

The final version is available from American Physiological Society via the DOI in this record.Our understanding of adipose tissue as an endocrine organ has been transformed over the last twenty years. During this time a number of adipocyte-derived factors or adipokines have been identified. This paper will review evidence for how adipokines acting via the central nervous system (CNS) regulate normal physiology and disease pathology. The reported CNS-mediated effects of adipokines are varied and include the regulation of energy homeostasis, autonomic nervous system activity, the reproductive axis, neurodevelopment, cardiovascular function, and cognition. Due to the wealth of information available and the diversity of their known functions, the archetypal adipokines leptin and adiponectin will be the focused on extensively. Other adipokines with established CNS actions will also be discussed. Due to the difficulties associated with studying CNS function on a molecular level in humans, the majority of our knowledge, and as such the studies described in this paper, comes from work in experimental animal models; however, where possible the relevant data from human studies are also highlighted

    Circulated Culture System of Tobacco Hairy Roots for Rapid Evaluation of Viral Multiplication and Movement

    [Synopsis] From the hairy roots induced by an inoculation of Agrobacterium rhizogenes into tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Bright Yellow) leaf segments, we obtained the hairy root clone which could frequently regenerate shoots from calli produced at the basal sites of lateral roots branched from major hairy roots. The leaflets detached from the regenerated shoots produced secondarily the hairy roots and differentiated into the secondary shoots via calli in a similar manner. This circulatory culture system for the hairy root production and plant regeneration was available for an in vitro assay of multiplication and translocation of TMV. By the inoculation into detached leaves of the regenerated shoots with TMV, the virus-specific mosaic symptom was observed in the leaflets of the newly regenerated shoots, and the localization of TMV in the symptomless tissues such as stems, petioles, and secondary hairy roots of the infected regenerants was easily detected by direct tissue printing immunoblotting assay.Konagaya, Ken-ich

    [Synopsis] Hairy roots derived from higher plants inoculated with Agrobacterium rhizogenes would be a promising candidate for biological removal of eutrophic nutrients in water, because of their rapid growth and easy regulation of culturing. We obtained 121 hairy root lines in total from infected tobacco and melon leaves, and we selected 60 hairy root lines on the basis of their elongation faster than 1.0 cm/day. Since the efficiency of removing the eutrophic nutrient elements from medium depends on the growth rate, selected lines were cultured in MS medium containing different concentration of 2,4-D. The growth rate of a rapid groth line, KMH-019, increased to about 1,000-fold by the addition of 0.005 μg/ml 2,4-D. The KMH-019 was suggested to be a pomising candidate applicable to a system for biological removal of eutrophic nutrient elements from water.  (摘要)富栄養化水の生物浄化システムを開発するため、本論はその第1報として、高等植物の毛状根を利用し、富栄養化因子である無機リンの消費効率を検討した。すなわち, メロンおよびタバコ葉片に Agrobacterium rhizogenes MAFF 07-20001株を接種し、形成された毛状根を継代培養した後、分離した60の毛状根系統を振とう培養し、それらの増殖と培地に残存する無機リン量を測定した。その結果、毛状根の増殖度は用いた系統間で大きく変化したが、培地に添加したリンの消費程度は毛状根の増殖度に比例して増高した。今回使用した毛状根系統の中では、KMH-019系統がもっとも高い増殖を示し、約1000倍の根生重増加が認められた。また、KMH-019系統を2,4-D添加培地で培養したところ、0.005μg/mlの2,4-D添加条件下で毛状根の増殖がさらに促進されたことから、本系統を富栄養化水生物浄化の候補系統として選抜した
