    Tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Gulf of Venezuela.

    Master's thesis in Petroleum Geosciences EngineeringThe Gulf of Venezuela is located at the boundary between the Cretaceous-Cenozoic deformation zone of the South American and Caribbean plates. It is an underexplored area lying between the hydrocarbon-rich Maracaibo Basin and the emergent plays such as the Perla field (Late Oligocene to Early Miocene carbonates) located on the allochthonous terrane. Gravity data, stratigraphy, structural styles, and subsidence plots reveal three main basement provinces in the Gulf of Venezuela: (1) A western Paleozoic basement (Maracaibo province) with continental-affinity similar to those in the Guajira Peninsula and the Maracaibo Basin; (2) a central province covering the area of the Urumaco trough offshore with Meso-Neoproterozoic rocks (Urumaco province); and (3) an easternmost province, with Cretaceous Caribbean arc rocks, related to the Leeward Antilles island arc system (Caribbean province). Two major interpreted strike-slip faults define the boundary between the main provinces. The Cuiza-Río Seco fault is the western flank of the Urumaco trough offshore and represents a structural and stratigraphic abrupt change that is proposed as the boundary between the Maracaibo autochthonous province and the allochthonous provinces. The Pueblo Nuevo fault is proposed to be the continuation onland of a major interpreted strike-slip fault, defining the boundary between the central and easternmost province. In addition, the Cuiza-Río Seco and Pueblo Nuevo faults accommodate strain partitioning as well as the Oca- Ancón fault but at different timing, due to oblique compression of the Caribbean plate against the South American plate. Furthermore, a pop-up structure associated with the Sierra de Perijá is recognized in the southernmost Maracaibo province, allowing to define about ̴ 70-80 km of right-lateral strike-slip displacement along the Oca fault. This fault has a relevant role to the present-day basement configuration, since it has displaced eastwards and segmented the northern part of the basement provinces, resulting in a more complex distribution that needs to be considered to reconstruct the geologic history. Considering the continuation of the Maracaibo block northwards, this region might hold promising opportunities for hydrocarbons exploration, where the Maracaibo Basin petroleum system might extends offshore into the Gulf of Venezuela.The Conjugate Basins, Tectonics and Hydrocarbons Project (CBTH)submittedVersio

    Melanoma expression analysis with Big Data technologies

    Melanoma is a highly immunogenic tumor. Therefore, in recent years physicians have incorporated drugs that alter the immune system into their therapeutic arsenal against this disease, revolutionizing in the treatment of patients in an advanced stage of the disease. This has led us to explore and deepen our knowledge of the immunology surrounding melanoma, in order to optimize its approach. At present, immunotherapy for metastatic melanoma is based on stimulating an individual’s own immune system through the use of specific monoclonal antibodies. The use of immunotherapy has meant that many of patients with melanoma have survived and therefore it constitutes a present and future treatment in this field. At the same time, drugs have been developed targeting specific mutations, specifically BRAF, resulting in large responses in tumor regression (set up in this clinical study to 18 months), as well as a higher percentage of long-term survivors. The analysis of the gene expression changes and their correlation with clinical changes can be developed using the tools provided by those companies which currently provide gene expression platforms. The gene expression platform used in this clinical study is NanoString, which provides nCounter. However, nCounter has some limitations as the type of analysis is restricted to a predefined set, and the introduction of clinical features is a complex task. This paper presents an approach to collect the clinical information using a structured database and a Web user interface to introduce this information, including the results of the gene expression measurements, to go a step further than the nCounter tool. As part of this work, we present an initial analysis of changes in the gene expression of a set of patients before and after targeted therapy. This analysis has been carried out using Big Data technologies (Apache Spark) with the final goal being to scale up to large numbers of patients, even though this initial study has a limited number of enrolled patients (12 in the first analysis). This is not a Big Data problem, but the underlaying study aims at targeting 20 patients per year just in Málaga, and this could be extended to be used to analyze the 3.600 patients diagnosed with melanoma per year.Universidad de Málaga. Dicha empresa se encuentra ubicada en Avenida Licorera 1ª- 05, Tunja, Boyacá.; pertenece al sector secundario. Es una empresa industrial especializada en la producción y comercialización de licores y alcoholes. Utiliza en la actualidad tecnologías de avanzada que garantizan la más alta calidad sumada a un equipo de trabajo caracterizado por el compromiso diario y permanente con el departamento de Boyacá. Se realizó el análisis del desempeño económico, social y ambiental de la organización (interno y/o externo) que permitió justificar la elaboración de un plan de responsabilidad social empresarial, haciendo énfasis en la dimensión más crítica. Además se consideró la dinámica empresarial y global de la industria licorera con el fin de visionarla como una organización socialmente responsable, creciente y competitiva en el tiempo.This Project main objective was to elaborate a corporate social responsibility plan starting from the identification of the economic, social and environmental impacts generated by the company Industria de Licores de Boyacá S.A. – C.I. that includes different strategies to fix or mitigate those impacts. Once the strategies are applied will contribute to add value to the organization and the liquor industry. This company is located at 1ª-05 Licorera Avenue, Tunja Boyacá which belongs to the secondary sector. It is an industrial company specialized in the production and commercialization of liquors and spirits. Currently, it uses state-of-the-art technologies that guarantee the highest quality. In addition to team work, the company´s quality is a daily and permanent commitment to Boyacá department. A performance analysis was made on the organization (internal or external) economic, social and environmental aspects that justifies the preparation of a corporate social responsibility plan which focuses on the most critical area. In addition, the business and global dynamics of the liquor industry were considered in order to view it as a socially responsible, growing and competitive organization over time

    Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Infection Biomarkers and TP53 Mutations in Hepatocellular Carcinomas from Colombia

    Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Globally, the most important HCC risk factors are Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and/or Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), chronic alcoholism, and dietary exposure to aflatoxins. We have described the epidemiological pattern of 202 HCC samples obtained from Colombian patients. Additionally we investigated HBV/HCV infections and TP53 mutations in 49 of these HCC cases. HBV biomarkers were detected in 58.1% of the cases; HBV genotypes F and D were characterized in three of the samples. The HCV biomarker was detected in 37% of the samples while HBV/HCV coinfection was found in 19.2%. Among TP53 mutations, 10.5% occur at the common aflatoxin mutation hotspot, codon 249. No data regarding chronic alcoholism was available from the cases. In conclusion, in this first study of HCC and biomarkers in a Colombian population, the main HCC risk factor was HBV infection

    In Situ Observations of the Deformation Behavior and Fracture Mechanisms of Ti-45Al-2Nb-2Mn+0.8 vol pct TiB₂

    The deformation and fracture mechanisms of a nearly lamellar Ti-45Al-2Nb-2Mn (at. pct) + 0.8 vol pct TiB₂ intermetallic, processed into an actual low-pressure turbine blade, were examined by means of in situ tensile and tensile-creep experiments performed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Low elongation-to-failure and brittle fracture were observed at room temperature, while the larger elongations-to-failure at high temperature facilitated the observation of the onset and propagation of damage. It was found that the dominant damage mechanisms at high temperature depended on the applied stress level. Interlamellar cracking was observed only above 390 MPa, which suggests that there is a threshold below which this mechanism is inhibited. Failure during creep tests at 250 MPa was controlled by intercolony cracking. The in situ observations demonstrated that the colony boundaries are damage nucleation and propagation sites during tensile creep, and they seem to be the weakest link in the microstructure for the tertiary creep stage. Therefore, it is proposed that interlamellar areas are critical zones for fracture at higher stresses, whereas lower stress, high-temperature creep conditions lead to intercolony cracking and fracture.The authors are grateful to Industria de Turbo Propulsores, S.A. for supplying the intermetallic blades.     An embedding technique to determine ττ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data

    An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model tau tau backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed mu mu events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way, a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. The technique described in this paper was developed for CMS. Its validation and the inherent uncertainties are also discussed. The demonstration of the performance of the technique is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS in 2017 at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1).Peer reviewe

    Measurement of electroweak WZ boson production and search for new physics in WZ + two jets events in pp collisions at √s=13TeV

    A measurement of WZ electroweak (EW) vector boson scattering is presented. The measurement is performed in the leptonic decay modes WZ→ℓνℓ′ℓ′, where ℓ,ℓ′=e,μ. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV at the LHC collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The WZ plus two jet production cross section is measured in fiducial regions with enhanced contributions from EW production and found to be consistent with standard model predictions. The EW WZ production in association with two jets is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 2.2 (2.5) standard deviations. Constraints on charged Higgs boson production and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in terms of dimension-eight effective field theory operators are also presented

    Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section, the top quark mass, and the strong coupling constant using dilepton events in pp collisions at root s=13TeV

    A measurement of the top quark-antiquark pair production cross section sigma(t (t) over bar) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016. Dilepton events (e(+/-) mu(-/+), mu(+) mu(-), e(+) e(-)) are selected and the cross section is measured from a likelihood fit. For a top quark mass parameter in the simulation of m(t)(MC) = 172.5 GeV the fit yields a measured cross section sigma(t (t) over bar) = 803 +/- 2 (stat) +/- 25 (syst) +/- 20 (lumi) pb, in agreement with the expectation from the standard model calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. A simultaneous fit of the cross section and the top quark mass parameter in the POWHEG simulation is performed. The measured value of m(t)(MC) = 172.33 +/- 0.14 (stat)(-0.72)(+0.66) (syst) GeV is in good agreement with previous measurements. The resulting cross section is used, together with the theoretical prediction, to determine the top quark mass and to extract a value of the strong coupling constant with different sets of parton distribution functions.Peer reviewe
