Exact multilocal renormalization on the effective action : application to the random sine Gordon model statics and non-equilibrium dynamics
We extend the exact multilocal renormalization group (RG) method to study the
flow of the effective action functional. This important physical quantity
satisfies an exact RG equation which is then expanded in multilocal components.
Integrating the nonlocal parts yields a closed exact RG equation for the local
part, to a given order in the local part. The method is illustrated on the O(N)
model by straightforwardly recovering the exponent and scaling
functions. Then it is applied to study the glass phase of the Cardy-Ostlund,
random phase sine Gordon model near the glass transition temperature. The
static correlations and equilibrium dynamical exponent are recovered and
several new results are obtained. The equilibrium two-point scaling functions
are obtained. The nonequilibrium, finite momentum, two-time response and
correlations are computed. They are shown to exhibit scaling forms,
characterized by novel exponents , as well as
universal scaling functions that we compute. The fluctuation dissipation ratio
is found to be non trivial and of the form . Analogies and

Episodic mass loss in binary evolution to the Wolf-Rayet phase: Keck and HST proper motions of RY Scuti's nebula
Binary mass transfer via Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) is a key channel for
producing stripped-envelope Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and may be critical to
account for SN Ib/c progenitors. RY Scuti is an extremely rare example of a
massive binary star caught in this brief but important phase. Its toroidal
nebula indicates equatorial mass loss during RLOF, while the mass-gaining star
is apparently embedded in an opaque accretion disk. RY Scuti's toroidal nebula
has two components: an inner ionised double-ring system, and an outer dust
torus that is twice the size of the ionised rings. We present two epochs of
Lband Keck NGS-AO images of the dust torus, plus three epochs of HST images of
the ionised gas rings. Proper motions show that the inner ionised rings and the
outer dust torus came from two separate ejection events roughly 130 and 250 yr
ago. This suggests that RLOF in massive contact binaries can be accompanied by
eruptive and episodic burst of mass loss, reminiscent of LBVs. We speculate
that the repeating outbursts may arise in the mass gainer from instabilities
associated with a high accretion rate. If discrete mass-loss episodes in other
RLOF binaries are accompanied by luminous outbursts, they might contribute to
the population of extragalactic optical transients. When RLOF ends for RY
Scuti, the overluminous mass gainer, currently surrounded by an accretion disk,
will probably become a B[e] supergiant and may outshine the hotter mass-donor
star that should die as a Type Ib/c supernova.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRA
Health-related quality of life and strain in caregivers of Australians with Parkinson’s disease : An observational study
Background: The relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers is little understood and any effects on caregiver strain remain unclear. This paper examines these relationships in an Australian sample. Methods: Using the generic EuroQol (EQ-5D) and disease-specific Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 Item (PDQ- 39), HRQoL was evaluated in a sample of 97 people with PD and their caregivers. Caregiver strain was assessed using the Modified Caregiver Strain Index. Associations were evaluated between: (i) caregiver and care-recipient HRQoL; (ii) caregiver HRQoL and caregiver strain, and; (iii) between caregiver strain and care-recipient HRQoL. Results: No statistically significant relationships were found between caregiver and care-recipient HRQoL, or between caregiver HRQoL and caregiver strain. Although this Australian sample of caregivers experienced relatively good HRQoL and moderately low strain, a significant correlation was found between HRQoL of people with PD and caregiver strain (rho 0.43, p<.001). Conclusion: Poor HRQoL in people with PD is associated with higher strain in caregivers. Protocol for a home-based integrated physical therapy program to reduce falls and improve mobility in people with Parkinson’s disease
Background The high incidence of falls associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD) increases the risk of injuries and immobility and compromises quality of life. Although falls education and strengthening programs have shown some benefit in healthy older people, the ability of physical therapy interventions in home settings to reduce falls and improve mobility in people with Parkinson’s has not been convincingly demonstrated.Methods/design 180 community living people with PD will be randomly allocated to receive either a home-based integrated rehabilitation program (progressive resistance strength training, movement strategy training and falls education) or a home-based life skills program (control intervention). Both programs comprise one hour of treatment and one hour of structured homework per week over six weeks of home therapy. Blinded assessments occurring before therapy commences, the week after completion of therapy and 12 months following intervention will establish both the immediate and long-term benefits of home-based rehabilitation. The number of falls, number of repeat falls, falls rate and time to first fall will be the primary measures used to quantify outcome. The economic costs associated with injurious falls, and the costs of running the integrated rehabilitation program from a health system perspective will be established. The effects of intervention on motor and global disability and on quality of life will also be examined. Discussion This study will provide new evidence on the outcomes and cost effectiveness of home-based movement rehabilitation programs for people living with PD
The FALCON concept: multi-object adaptive optics and atmospheric tomography for integral field spectroscopy. Principles and performances on an 8 meter telescope
Integral field spectrographs are major instruments to study the mechanisms
involved in the formation and the evolution of early galaxies. When combined
with multi-object spectroscopy, those spectrographs can behave as machines used
to derive physical parameters of galaxies during their formation process. Up to
now, there is only one available spectrograph with multiple integral field
units, e.g. FLAMES/GIRAFFE on the VLT. However, current ground based
instruments suffer from a degradation of their spatial resolution due to
atmospheric turbulence. In this article we describe the performance of FALCON,
an original concept of a new generation multi-object integral field
spectrograph with adaptive optics for the ESO Very Large Telescope. The goal of
FALCON is to combine high angular resolution (0.25 arcsec) and high spectral
resolution (R > 5000) in J and H bands over a wide field of view (10x10
arcmin2) in the VLT Nasmyth focal plane. However, instead of correcting the
whole field, FALCON will use multi-object adaptive optics (MOAO) to perform
locally on each scientific target the adaptive optics correction. This requires
then to use atmospheric tomography in order to use suitable natural guide stars
for wavefront sensing. We will show that merging MOAO and atmospheric
tomography allows us to determine the internal kinematics of distant galaxies
up to z=2 with a sky coverage of 50%, even for objects observed near the
galactic pole. The application of such a concept to Extremely Large Telescopes
seems therefore to be a very promising way to study galaxy evolution from z = 1

Across-arc geochemical variations in the Southern Volcanic Zone, Chile (34.5- 38.0°S): Constraints on Mantle Wedge and Input Compositions
Crustal assimilation (e.g. Hildreth and Moorbath, 1988) and/or subduction erosion (e.g. Stern, 1991; Kay et al., 2005) are believed to control the geochemical variations along the northern portion of the Chilean Southern Volcanic Zone. In order to evaluate these hypotheses, we present a comprehensive geochemical data set (major and trace elements and O-Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotopes) from Holocene primarily olivine-bearing volcanic rocks across the arc between 34.5-38.0°S, including volcanic front centers from Tinguiririca to Callaqui, the rear arc centers of Infernillo Volcanic Field, Laguna del Maule and Copahue, and extending 300 km into the backarc. We also present an equivalent data set for Chile Trench sediments outboard of this profile. The volcanic arc (including volcanic front and rear arc) samples primarily range from basalt to andesite/trachyandesite, whereas the backarc rocks are low-silica alkali basalts and trachybasalts. All samples show some characteristic subduction zone trace element enrichments and depletions, but the backarc samples show the least. Backarc basalts have higher Ce/Pb, Nb/U, Nb/Zr, and Ta/Hf, and lower Ba/Nb and Ba/La, consistent with less of a slab-derived component in the backarc and, consequently, lower degrees of mantle melting. The mantle-like δ18O in olivine and plagioclase phenocrysts (volcanic arc = 4.9-5.6 and backarc = 5.0-5.4 per mil) and lack of correlation between δ18O and indices of differentiation and other isotope ratios, argue against significant crustal assimilation. Volcanic arc and backarc samples almost completely overlap in Sr and Nd isotopic composition. High precision (double-spike) Pb isotope ratios are tightly correlated, precluding significant assimilation of older sialic crust but indicating mixing between a South Atlantic Mid Ocean-Ridge Basalt (MORB) source and a slab component derived from subducted sediments and altered oceanic crust. Hf-Nd isotope ratios define separate linear arrays for the volcanic arc and backarc, neither of which trend toward subducting sediment, possibly reflecting a primarily asthenospheric mantle array for the volcanic arc and involvement of enriched Proterozoic lithospheric mantle in the backarc. We propose a quantitative mixing model between a mixed-source, slab-derived melt and a heterogeneous mantle beneath the volcanic arc. The model is consistent with local geodynamic parameters, assuming water-saturated conditions within the slab
Robust RT-qPCR Data Normalization: Validation and Selection of Internal Reference Genes during Post-Experimental Data Analysis
Reverse transcription and real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) has been widely used for rapid quantification of relative gene expression. To offset technical confounding variations, stably-expressed internal reference genes are measured simultaneously along with target genes for data normalization. Statistic methods have been developed for reference validation; however normalization of RT-qPCR data still remains arbitrary due to pre-experimental determination of particular reference genes. To establish a method for determination of the most stable normalizing factor (NF) across samples for robust data normalization, we measured the expression of 20 candidate reference genes and 7 target genes in 15 Drosophila head cDNA samples using RT-qPCR. The 20 reference genes exhibit sample-specific variation in their expression stability. Unexpectedly the NF variation across samples does not exhibit a continuous decrease with pairwise inclusion of more reference genes, suggesting that either too few or too many reference genes may detriment the robustness of data normalization. The optimal number of reference genes predicted by the minimal and most stable NF variation differs greatly from 1 to more than 10 based on particular sample sets. We also found that GstD1, InR and Hsp70 expression exhibits an age-dependent increase in fly heads; however their relative expression levels are significantly affected by NF using different numbers of reference genes. Due to highly dependent on actual data, RT-qPCR reference genes thus have to be validated and selected at post-experimental data analysis stage rather than by pre-experimental determination

Dose response of the 16p11.2 distal copy number variant on intracranial volume and basal ganglia.
Carriers of large recurrent copy number variants (CNVs) have a higher risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. The 16p11.2 distal CNV predisposes carriers to e.g., autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. We compared subcortical brain volumes of 12 16p11.2 distal deletion and 12 duplication carriers to 6882 non-carriers from the large-scale brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging collaboration, ENIGMA-CNV. After stringent CNV calling procedures, and standardized FreeSurfer image analysis, we found negative dose-response associations with copy number on intracranial volume and on regional caudate, pallidum and putamen volumes (β = -0.71 to -1.37; P < 0.0005). In an independent sample, consistent results were obtained, with significant effects in the pallidum (β = -0.95, P = 0.0042). The two data sets combined showed significant negative dose-response for the accumbens, caudate, pallidum, putamen and ICV (P = 0.0032, 8.9 × 10-6, 1.7 × 10-9, 3.5 × 10-12 and 1.0 × 10-4, respectively). Full scale IQ was lower in both deletion and duplication carriers compared to non-carriers. This is the first brain MRI study of the impact of the 16p11.2 distal CNV, and we demonstrate a specific effect on subcortical brain structures, suggesting a neuropathological pattern underlying the neurodevelopmental syndromes

An improved method for the synthesis of tethered ruthenium(II) complexes of monosulfonylated diamines is described, together with their application to the hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes. The complexes were applied directly, in their chloride form, to asymmetric ketone hydrogenation, to give products in excess of 99% ee in the best cases, using 30 bar of hydrogen at 60 °C, and to the selective reduction of aldehydes over other functional groups
Identification, characterisation and expression analysis of natural killer receptor genes in Chlamydia pecorum infected koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus)
BACKGROUND: Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), an iconic Australian marsupial, are being heavily impacted by the spread of Chlamydia pecorum, an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen. Koalas vary in their response to this pathogen, with some showing no symptoms, while others suffer severe symptoms leading to infertility, blindness or death. Little is known about the pathology of this disease and the immune response against it in this host. Studies have demonstrated that natural killer (NK) cells, key components of the innate immune system, are involved in the immune response to chlamydial infections in humans. These cells can directly lyse cells infected by intracellular pathogens and their ability to recognise these infected cells is mediated through NK receptors on their surface. These are encoded in two regions of the genome, the leukocyte receptor complex (LRC) and the natural killer complex (NKC). These two families evolve rapidly and different repertoires of genes, which have evolved by gene duplication, are seen in different species. METHODS: In this study we aimed to characterise genes belonging to the NK receptor clusters in the koala by searching available koala transcriptomes using a combination of search methods. We developed a qPCR assay to quantify relative expression of four genes, two encoded within the NK receptor cluster (CLEC1B, CLEC4E) and two known to play a role in NK response to Chalmydia in humans (NCR3, PRF1). RESULTS: We found that the NK receptor repertoire of the koala closely resembles that of the Tasmanian devil, with minimal genes in the NKC, but with lineage specific expansions in the LRC. Additional genes important for NK cell activity, NCR3 and PRF1, were also identified and characterised. In a preliminary study to investigate whether these genes are involved in the koala immune response to infection by its chlamydial pathogen, C. pecorum, we investigated the expression of four genes in koalas with active chlamydia infection, those with past infection and those without infection using qPCR. This analysis revealed that one of these four, CLEC4E, may be upregulated in response to chlamydia infection. CONCLUSION: We have characterised genes of the NKC and LRC in koalas and have discovered evidence that one of these genes may be upregulated in koalas with chlamydia, suggesting that these receptors may play a role in the immune response of koalas to chlamydia infection
