    Early carboniferous brachiopod faunas from the Baoshan block, west Yunnan, southwest China

    38 brachiopod species in 27 genera and subgenera are described from the Yudong Formation in the Shidian-Baoshan area, west Yunnan, southwest China. New taxa include two new subgenera: Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) and Brachythyrina (Longathyrina), and seven new species: Eomarginifera yunnanensis, Marginatia cylindrica, Unispirifer (Unispirifer) xiangshanensis, Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) wafangjieensis, Brachythyrina (Brachythyrina) transversa, Brachythyrina (Longathyrina) baoshanensis, and Girtyella wafangjieensis. Based on the described material and constraints from associated coral and conodont faunas, the age of the brachiopod fauna from the Yudon Formation is considered late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous), with a possibility extending into earlyViseacutean.<br /

    Measurement of event-shape observables in Z→ℓ+ℓ− events in pp collisions at √ s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Event-shape observables measured using charged particles in inclusive ZZ-boson events are presented, using the electron and muon decay modes of the ZZ bosons. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 1.1fb11.1 {\rm fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV. Charged-particle distributions, excluding the lepton--antilepton pair from the ZZ-boson decay, are measured in different ranges of transverse momentum of the ZZ boson. Distributions include multiplicity, scalar sum of transverse momenta, beam thrust, transverse thrust, spherocity, and F\mathcal{F}-parameter, which are in particular sensitive to properties of the underlying event at small values of the ZZ-boson transverse momentum. The Sherpa event generator shows larger deviations from the measured observables than Pythia8 and Herwig7. Typically, all three Monte Carlo generators provide predictions that are in better agreement with the data at high ZZ-boson transverse momenta than at low ZZ-boson transverse momenta and for the observables that are less sensitive to the number of charged particles in the event.Comment: 36 pages plus author list + cover page (54 pages total), 14 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC, All figures including auxiliary figures are available at http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/PHYSICS/PAPERS/STDM-2014-0

    A new devonoproductid genus Poloniproductus is described with the Eifelian Productella varians Biernat, 1966 as a type species. The Devonoproductinae Muir-Wood et Cooper are elevated to the familial rank. Taxonomic and evolutionary aspects of the genus and family are briefly discussed.Rewizja eifelskiego brachiopoda z Gór Świętokrzyskich, Productella varians Biernat, 1966 wykazała, że brachiopod ten powinien być wyłączony z rodzaju Productella Hall, 1867. Gatunek ten został wyznaczony jako typowy dla nowego rodzaju, Poloniproductus. Pokryta rzadkimi kolcami skorupka nóżkowa, skorupka ramieniowa z koncentrycznymi blaszkami, które w poszczególnych fazach wzrostowych mogły pełnić rolę welonu (trail), obecność uszek kardynalnych oraz występująca tylko w stadium młodocianym śladowa alveola wskazują na pokrewieństwo z rodzajami zaliczanymi dotychczas do podrodziny Devonoproductinae Muir-Wood et Cooper, umieszczanej w rodzinach Leioproductidae Muir-Wood et Cooper lub Productellidae Schuchert et Le Vene. Wymienione cechy mają wysoką wartość taksonomiczną co pozwoliło na podniesienie Devonoproductinae do rangi rodziny. Devonoproductidae charakteryzują dodatkowo następujące cechy: delikatne radialne prążkowanie obu skorupek, niska area (ginglymus) i wyraźnie zaznaczone jamy uszkowe wyodrębnione przez boczne grzbieciki na skorupce nóżkowej.
