A low-cost parallel implementation of direct numerical simulation of wall turbulence
A numerical method for the direct numerical simulation of incompressible wall
turbulence in rectangular and cylindrical geometries is presented. The
distinctive feature resides in its design being targeted towards an efficient
distributed-memory parallel computing on commodity hardware. The adopted
discretization is spectral in the two homogeneous directions; fourth-order
accurate, compact finite-difference schemes over a variable-spacing mesh in the
wall-normal direction are key to our parallel implementation. The parallel
algorithm is designed in such a way as to minimize data exchange among the
computing machines, and in particular to avoid taking a global transpose of the
data during the pseudo-spectral evaluation of the non-linear terms. The
computing machines can then be connected to each other through low-cost network
devices. The code is optimized for memory requirements, which can moreover be
subdivided among the computing nodes. The layout of a simple, dedicated and
optimized computing system based on commodity hardware is described. The
performance of the numerical method on this computing system is evaluated and
compared with that of other codes described in the literature, as well as with
that of the same code implementing a commonly employed strategy for the
pseudo-spectral calculation.Comment: To be published in J. Comp. Physic
Niveles sĂ©ricos del antĂgeno prostĂĄtico especĂfico (PSA) dentro de la campaña de prevenciĂłn del cĂĄncer de prĂłstata
La determinaciĂłn del antĂgeno prostĂĄtico especĂfico (PSA) forma parte del diagnĂłsticodel cĂĄncer de prĂłstata. Como en condiciones patolĂłgicas sus niveles aumentan, esconsiderado marcador tumoral Ăștil de diagnĂłstico de cĂĄncer de prĂłstata en forma precoz.Determinamos los niveles sĂ©ricos de PSA, dentro de la campaña âSemana de la PrĂłstataâorganizado por la CĂĄtedra de UrologĂa del Hospital de ClĂnicas en Octubre 2007. De los 89pacientes, el 86,5% presentĂł niveles de PSA entre 0 y 4ng/ml, 10,1% entre 4 y 10 ng/mly el 3,4% entre 10 y 40 ng/ml respectivamente. Se realizĂł una distribuciĂłn por edad y sedeterminaron las medias de los valores de PSA en los mismos. El 12,4% del grupo E1(41 a 50 años) con 0,5ng/ml de PSA, el 52,8% del grupo E2 (51 a 60 años) con 7,4ng/mlde PSA, el 28,1% del grupo E3 (61 a 70 años) con 5,2ng/ml de PSA y el 6,7% del grupoE4 (71 a 80 años) con 1,5 ng/ml de PSA. HallĂĄndose valores mĂĄs elevados de PSA en elgrupo E2 y E3, no asĂ en el grupo E4. En relaciĂłn al tacto rectal (TR) y los valores delPSA, el 31,5%(28) presentaron TR normal con un valor medio de PSA de 3,4. Mientrasque el 65,1% (58) presentaban TR patolĂłgico con valores medios de PSA de 7,17 en 55pacientes y sĂłlo 3 pacientes con TR patolĂłgico presentaron niveles de PSA por debajo de2,5 ng/ml. El TR resultĂł ser la variable con mayor poder de discriminaciĂłn, con respectoal resultado de PSA en estos pacientes
Challenges and improvement pathways to develop quasi-1D (Sb1-xBix)2Se3-based materials for optically tuneable photovoltaic applications. Towards chalcogenide narrow-bandgap devices
Quasi-1D chalcogenides have shown great promises in the development of emerging photovoltaic technologies. However, most quasi-1D semiconductors other than Sb2Se3 and Sb2S3 have been seldom investigated for energy generation applications. Indeed, cationic or anionic alloying strategies allow changing the bandgap of these materials, opening the door to the development of an extended range of chalcogenides with tuneable optical and electrical properties. In this work, Bi incorporation into the Sb2Se3 structure has been proved as an effective approach to modulate the bandgap between 0.1. In order to better understand the underlying mechanisms leading to the formation of (Sb1-xBix)2Se3, and thus design specific strategies to enhance its properties, thin films with different annealing time and temperature have been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, it has been observed that Sb2Se3 and Bi2Se3 are formed first, with Bi melting at 300 ÂżC and diffusing rapidly towards the surface of the film. At higher temperature, the binary compounds combine to form the solid solution, however as the dwell time increases, (Sb1-xBix)2Se3 decomposes again into Bi2Se3 and Sb. This study has shown that the material is essentially limited by compositional disorder and recombination via defects. Dynamic changes in the epigenomic landscape regulate human organogenesis and link to developmental disorders
How the genome activates or silences transcriptional programmes governs organ formation. Little is known in human embryos undermining our ability to benchmark the fidelity of stem cell differentiation or cell programming, or interpret the pathogenicity of noncoding variation. Here, we study histone modifications across thirteen tissues during human organogenesis. We integrate the data with transcription to build an overview of how the human genome differentially regulates alternative organ fates including by repression. Promoters from nearly 20,000 genes partition into discrete states. Key developmental gene sets are actively repressed outside of the appropriate organ without obvious bivalency. Candidate enhancers, functional in zebrafish, allow imputation of tissue-specific and shared patterns of transcription factor binding. Overlaying more than 700 noncoding mutations from patients with developmental disorders allows correlation to unanticipated target genes. Taken together, the data provide a comprehensive genomic framework for investigating normal and abnormal human development
Simulation of Single and Twin Impinging Jets in Cross-flow of VTOL Aircrafts (Review)
When operating near the ground beneath a Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (VSTOL) aircraft a complex turbulent 3D flow is generated. This flow field can be represented by the configuration of twin impinging jets in a cross-flow. Studying these jets is a significant parameter for the design of VTOL aircraft. This flowfield during very low speed or hover flight operations is very complex and time dependent. An important number of experimental researches and simulations have been carried out to be able to understand much better these flows related with powered lift vehicles. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach will be used in this paper work for simulation purposes of a single and twin impinging jet through and without crossflow
Bad Practice in Erosion Management: The Southern Sicily Case Study
This case study from Sicily illustrates a common sequence of events
where one unwise action was countered with another, which in turn created
additional problems. The situation arose through strong political interference and
ignorance (or lack of concern) regarding the environmental impacts of human
interventions on the shoreline and by the public perception that government has a
duty to protect private property. The poor design and location of ports and harbours
produced infilling problems and huge updrift accretion with concomitant downdrift
erosion. The human-induced coastal retreat was counteracted by the progressive
emplacement of breakwaters creating a âdominoâ effect. On many occasions
these were constructed to protect unplanned and illegal (in the sense that they do
not conform to planning regulations) beachfront summer houses. Without the
presence of these structures, there would have been no need for publicly funded
intervention.
Furthermore, only a narrow coastal belt close to the shoreline is used by
bathers on the wide beaches formed updrift of ports and harbours and in the lee
of breakwaters, most of the accreted beach being unused or partially occupied by
tourist developments. Thus beach users and municipalities acquired some benefits
from beach accretion at specific sites, the opposite being true in eroding areas
Improvement of composition of CdTe thin films during heat treatment in the presence of CdCl2
CdCl2 treatment is a crucial step in development of CdS/CdTe solar cells. Although this rocessing step has been used over a period of three decades, full understanding is not yet achieved. This paper reports the experimental evidence for improvement of composition of CdTe layers during CdCl2 treatment. This investigation makes use of four selected analytical techniques; Photo-electro-chemical (PEC) cell, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). CdTe layers used were electroplated using three Cd precursors; CdSO4, Cd(NO3)2 and CdCl2. Results show the improvement of stoichiometry of CdTe layers during CdCl2 treatment through chemical reaction between Cd from CdCl2 and elemental Te that usually precipitate during CdTe growth, due to its natural
behaviour. XRD and SEM results show that the low-temperature (~85ÂșC) electroplated CdTe layers consist of ~(20-60) nm size crystallites, but after CdCl2 treatment, the layers show drastic recrystallisation with grains becoming a few microns in size. These CdCl2 treated
layers are then comparable to high temperature grown CdTe layers by the size of grains
Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in âsNN=5.02ââTeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (ÎÏ) and pseudorapidity (Îη) are measured in âsNN=5.02ââTeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1ââÎŒb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ÎŁETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Îη|<5) ânear-sideâ (ÎÏâŒ0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ÎŁETPb. A long-range âaway-sideâ (ÎÏâŒÏ) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ÎŁETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Îη and ÎÏ) and ÎŁETPb dependence. The resultant ÎÏ correlation is approximately symmetric about Ï/2, and is consistent with a dominant cosâĄ2ÎÏ modulation for all ÎŁETPb ranges and particle pT
