    Preferência de oviposição de Eugeniamyia dispar (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) em folhas e ramos de sua planta hospedeira Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae)

    Locais da planta hospedeira com recursos de alta qualidade são mais visados por galhadores. Nossos objetivos foram verificar se Eugeniamyia dispar (Diptera) prefere atacar ramos e folhas de Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae) com elevado vigor, assim como determinar quais microhabitats verticais e horizontais das folhas são mais abundantes em galhas. Nós medimos os comprimentos de ramos folhas de indivíduos adultos de E. uniflora. Para determinar a quantidade de ramos galhados e abundância de galhas foliares, nós distribuímos as medidas dessas estruturas em classes de comprimento. Nós ainda estabelecemos três classes de medidas verticais e horizontais das folhas galhadas para verificar quais desses locais possuíam maior número de galhas. À medida que houve o aumento das classes de comprimento dos ramos e folhas, maior foi o ataque do galhador a essas estruturas. Ocorreu decréscimo no gradiente de galhas da base em direção ao ápice (classes verticais) e da nervura central às bordas (classes horizontais). Esses resultados demonstram que E. dispar possui preferência por induzir galhas em ramos e folhas mais vigorosos, assim como proposto pela Hipótese do Vigor da Planta; o mesmo ocorreu próximo ao pecíolo e nervura central de folhas de E. uniflora

    Efeitos da fertilização sobre interações tritróficas entre planta, afídeo e formigas invasoras: um teste experimental

    A fertilização pode desencadear um efeito positivo em plantas daninhas, refletindo, através de um efeito cascata, no aumento populacional de pragas como afídeos e formigas mutualistas. Neste estudo, nós avaliamos como a fertilização do solo influencia na interação entre as invasoras Tithonia diversifolia (Asteraceae), Aphis gossypii (Aphididae) e das formigas Pheidole megacephala e Solenopsis invicta (Formicidae). Através de um experimento, 30 plântulas que apresentavam afídeos e formigas foram separadas em dois grupos: um enriquecido nutricionalmente com fertilizante sintético, e outro sem fertilização. A clorofila foliar, o número de afídeos e de formigas foram coletados no início e término do experimento. Nossos resultados mostraram um aumentou de mais de 50% na clorofila foliar, no número de afídeos e de formigas do início ao final do estudo no grupo fertilizado. No entanto, somente a clorofila e o número de formigas foram maiores nas plântulas fertilizadas em relação às sem fertilização. Como conclusão, nosso estudo demonstra que a fertilização causa um efeito bottom-up positivo na interação tritróficas entre plantas, afídeos e formigas invasoras

    Phase III randomized trial of sunitinib versus capecitabine in patients with previously treated HER2-negative advanced breast cancer

    This multicenter, randomized, open-label phase III trial (planned enrollment: 700 patients) was conducted to test the hypothesis that single-agent sunitinib improves progression-free survival (PFS) compared with capecitabine as treatment for advanced breast cancer (ABC). Patients with HER2-negative ABC that recurred after anthracycline and taxane therapy were randomized (1:1) to sunitinib 37.5 mg/day or capecitabine 1,250 mg/m2 (1,000 mg/m2 in patients >65 years) BID on days 1–14 q3w. The independent data-monitoring committee (DMC) determined during the first interim analysis (238 patients randomized to sunitinib, 244 to capecitabine) that the trial be terminated due to futility in reaching the primary endpoint. No statistical evidence supported the hypothesis that sunitinib improved PFS compared with capecitabine (one-sided P = 0.999). The data indicated that PFS was shorter with sunitinib than capecitabine (median 2.8 vs. 4.2 months, respectively; HR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.16–1.87; two-sided P = 0.002). Median overall survival (15.3 vs. 24.6 months; HR, 1.17; two-sided P = 0.350) and objective response rates (11 vs. 16%; odds ratio, 0.65; P = 0.109) were numerically inferior with sunitinib versus capecitabine. While no new or unexpected safety findings were reported, sunitinib treatment was associated with higher frequencies and greater severities of many common adverse events (AEs) compared with capecitabine, resulting in more temporary discontinuations due to AEs with sunitinib (66 vs. 51%). The relative dose intensity was lower with sunitinib than capecitabine (73 vs. 95%). Based on these efficacy and safety results, sunitinib should not be used as monotherapy for patients with ABC

    Mutations in STAT3 and IL12RB1 impair the development of human IL-17–producing T cells

    The cytokines controlling the development of human interleukin (IL) 17–producing T helper cells in vitro have been difficult to identify. We addressed the question of the development of human IL-17–producing T helper cells in vivo by quantifying the production and secretion of IL-17 by fresh T cells ex vivo, and by T cell blasts expanded in vitro from patients with particular genetic traits affecting transforming growth factor (TGF) β, IL-1, IL-6, or IL-23 responses. Activating mutations in TGFB1, TGFBR1, and TGFBR2 (Camurati-Engelmann disease and Marfan-like syndromes) and loss-of-function mutations in IRAK4 and MYD88 (Mendelian predisposition to pyogenic bacterial infections) had no detectable impact. In contrast, dominant-negative mutations in STAT3 (autosomal-dominant hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome) and, to a lesser extent, null mutations in IL12B and IL12RB1 (Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial diseases) impaired the development of IL-17–producing T cells. These data suggest that IL-12Rβ1– and STAT-3–dependent signals play a key role in the differentiation and/or expansion of human IL-17–producing T cell populations in vivo

    Astrophysics with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

    Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy as it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and other space-based instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed: ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help make progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe

    Racial differences in systemic sclerosis disease presentation: a European Scleroderma Trials and Research group study

    Objectives. Racial factors play a significant role in SSc. We evaluated differences in SSc presentations between white patients (WP), Asian patients (AP) and black patients (BP) and analysed the effects of geographical locations.Methods. SSc characteristics of patients from the EUSTAR cohort were cross-sectionally compared across racial groups using survival and multiple logistic regression analyses.Results. The study included 9162 WP, 341 AP and 181 BP. AP developed the first non-RP feature faster than WP but slower than BP. AP were less frequently anti-centromere (ACA; odds ratio (OR) = 0.4, P < 0.001) and more frequently anti-topoisomerase-I autoantibodies (ATA) positive (OR = 1.2, P = 0.068), while BP were less likely to be ACA and ATA positive than were WP [OR(ACA) = 0.3, P < 0.001; OR(ATA) = 0.5, P = 0.020]. AP had less often (OR = 0.7, P = 0.06) and BP more often (OR = 2.7, P < 0.001) diffuse skin involvement than had WP.AP and BP were more likely to have pulmonary hypertension [OR(AP) = 2.6, P < 0.001; OR(BP) = 2.7, P = 0.03 vs WP] and a reduced forced vital capacity [OR(AP) = 2.5, P < 0.001; OR(BP) = 2.4, P < 0.004] than were WP. AP more often had an impaired diffusing capacity of the lung than had BP and WP [OR(AP vs BP) = 1.9, P = 0.038; OR(AP vs WP) = 2.4, P < 0.001]. After RP onset, AP and BP had a higher hazard to die than had WP [hazard ratio (HR) (AP) = 1.6, P = 0.011; HR(BP) = 2.1, P < 0.001].Conclusion. Compared with WP, and mostly independent of geographical location, AP have a faster and earlier disease onset with high prevalences of ATA, pulmonary hypertension and forced vital capacity impairment and higher mortality. BP had the fastest disease onset, a high prevalence of diffuse skin involvement and nominally the highest mortality
